If for some reason you weren’t doing enough discovering with the Discovery Channel alone, you’re in luck. The new offshoot Discovery Life Channel has just greenlit its first series Those Girls:

“Those Girls” offers an in-depth look at four pairs of transgender couples and friends, the show is being billed as the first TV series to ever profile a transgender community this closely. Those being featured included best friends Kassidy and Chloe, who are navigating the challenges of transitioning together; Tanya and Jaime, a couple who have moved back into Jaime’s parents’ house while handling child-related issues with Tanya’s ex-wife; Macy and Sharon, a married couple facing new hurdles since Macy’s recent transition; and Robyn and Andrew, best friends who became romantically involved after one of them transitioned.

So I’m torn. On the one hand, lots of people still don’t personally know a transgendered person, and tv does offer a convenient, almost intimate way of introducing people to still unfamiliar ideas. If the show can accurately document these people’s lives, it can offer a really substantial chance for them to put a face to the idea of transgenderism.

On the other hand, son of a bitch, are we really not there yet? Do we really expect every group of people whose sexual or gender identity falls outside the norm to hold ours hands and slowly explain why they are the way they are? Can we not just accept that some people will do things in their private lives that we don’t understand but in no way impacts us at all, and we can just let that slide?

And that doesn’t even touch on the education/ exploitation balancing act that would be required to do this show well. When people allow their personal lives to be put on display, there’s always going to be a advertising factor to it. It’s a very short jump from “selflessly attempting to educate by being documented” to “fame whore hocking your own clothing line.” And, sorry The Discovery Channel, but you’re Pulitzer Prize worthy series Billy Bob’s Gags to Riches isn’t instilling a lot of faith in me.

Maybe I’ll just watch Transparent again instead.
