Showtime has put together a fun new advertising campaign for the upcoming third season of “Dexter” (great show people — go get yourself the DVDs now). Their ad company has drummed up four fake magazine covers which will run in a bunch of other magazines and be be plastered up as posters. Good stuff — check it:

I'm impressed. This is far more creative and artistic than anything I've seen. I'm amazed the mags are okay with it. They're all so well done. Keep on killin' Dex. Keep on.

I'm hoping for DexGirl myself. I'm not really into guy with tits. Unless they're hairy.

Cannot.wait.

Cute. And nice to see that the legit mags seem (thus far) to be on board.

My parents are watching the DVDs of this now, but I saw them last fall. For someone who really did read the books the series is kind of disappointing in ways, but then again, Michael C Hall is also kind of a fox.

Win some, lose some.

The magazine covers look great. I think they should do a Cosmo one: "50 New Ways to Kill Your Man!" "Why He Won't Commit: Is It Drugs, Another Woman, or Serial Killing? Take Our Quiz!"

With Cosmo, the answer is always "Suck his Mr. Turkey Neck!"

The first episode of the 3rd series leaked out a couple of days ago.....haven't procured myself a copy of it yet though....

I still haven't seen this show, due mostly to the fact that I don't have Showtime. Methinks I'd best catch up on the DVDs, especially since I just discovered that Julie Benz is apparently in it??

This is a terrific and fun campaign. I love his shoes on the DQ cover. They are fantastic.

I read the books, too, and enjoyed them; but be honest--they're very slight. I was pleasantly surprised by how the writers were able to expand that slender material and give the story some real depth.

My one quibble is that TV Dexter is too sensitive, too "human"--I enjoy the gleeful gloating Book Dexter more--but I expect he has to be more sympathetic for a TV audience. And Hall gives one hell of a performance.

I was worried that Season 2 would wander off track, and it did, a little; but I still enjoyed it enormously (Thank God that uber-bitch is dead!) and I can't wait to see Season 3!

Nice! And so collectible! But hard to find over here, I'm thinking.

I love Dexter. Michael C Hall gives a delicious performance, but everybody in it is good. Even the 'gross, pale, titty English vampire' is not bothering me on second viewing - I get her, now. But I miss Doakes...

Dexter rocks. Hell, the opening titles are the creepiest thing I've seen on TV ever.

What?!?!

Please contact your cable provider and remedy that right now. Today.

Not having Showtime is a slap in the face to Michael C. Hall. It's like saying, "No, Michael C. Hall, you cannot get it 9 times on the bed, on the floor, in the hallway up against the door." That's like saying, "No! Michael C. Hall, You cannot watch me while I'm dropping it likes it hot, and then spank it when I'm not." It's like saying, "NO, MICHAEL C. HALL! I DO NOT LIKE IT ON A BOAT IN A MOAT, IN A HOUSE WITH A MOUSE, ON A BOX WITH YOU, YOU DAMN FOX."

And you know damn well those are just lies. Blasphemy, frankly.

Wow, J_Capri. I'm on the phone even now.

I love a good porny Dr. Suess, J_Capri. Call me when the Lorax starts sticking it to Yertle the Turtle.

Julie, have you ever snorted Cheerios up your nose? Not. Fun. That said, you've officially bailed yourself out of any trouble you were in regarding that unfortunate series of bad decisions you made as a teen. I think Dr. Seuss was made for porny rhymes. Thanks for bringing a (cheap) laugh to my sucky day, although thanks to you I'll be smelling honey and nuts all day.

I saw this when CBS ran the series during the writers' strike. It's definitely worth watching. I, also, do not have Showtime, so I will have to check out the DVDs.

Jerce, I was just saying to my dad that the biggest difference is how dark the character of Dexter is in the books. Then again, I never sympathized with the Dexter in the book, I just understood him. In order to really transition to television and hook people, they probably did have to make him more warm and fuzzy.

The other thing I love about those books? They have yet to confuse the classifications Serial Killer and Mass Murderer which is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Of course, J_Capri has beautifully and succinctly elucidated what there is to love about the show.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at September 9, 2008 12:52 PM

I read the books too, but I feel like the show far outstrips them, a rare occurrence I know. But I think the show does a better job of delving into the characters and exploring plotlines, whereas the books seem to only scratch the surface. I do agree however, that the TV Dexter has gotten FAR too human. I'd love to see him return to the darkness of the books.

Oh and J_Capri- How do you feel about candelight dinners and walks along the beach, because I think I want to marry you.

I switched from HBO to Showtime because of Dexter! I can't wait for the new season!

FYI, if you have Netflix you can watch season 1 of Dexter on demand.

You can also download episodes from iTunes the day after airing.

Definitely one of the classiest ad campaigns I've ever seen. Can't wait for the show to come back on. Just a couple more weeks!

Wicked cool ad. Very smart/witty.

However, I'm not a fan who thinks that the books are better than the show. I also don't think that Dexter becomes too soft/likable in the show. I mean...the Dexter in the books seemed, to me at least, to be a bit full of contradictions. He over-stated how he wasn't emotional, but would then talk about how he liked things/certain people. He seemed just fake to me. But then, I could be biased 'cause I read the books after first becoming hooked to the show.

:-)

Basically, Dexter Morgan is the man.
