Del Toro Sells Out to Disney

Guillermo Del Toro, who has had the fanboys wrapped around his finger since The Devil’s Backbone and was set to direct The Hobbit up until a few weeks ago, has decided: “Fuck the fanboys; I’m taking the cash.”

Del Toro announced after the TR0N panel at Comic-Con today that he’d be remaking the movie based on the Disney ride. It was last made by Eddie Murphy in 2003. The results were disastrous.

But don’t worry, del Toro insisted that his version would be scary, and would focus on The Hatbox Ghost. We want this to be “the haunted house movie that a generation remembers and loves,” he added, according to The Washington Post. Talking to THR, he also said that The Haunted Mansion “would be a thrill ride for the whole family.”

It didn’t take long for del Toro to pick up the Disney talking points. What a sham and a half. This is what del Toro has been teasing would be the big announcement at Comic-con this year?

So it goes.

93? Seems sooner... like '03.

But, yea, that movie was on ABC Family a month or two ago. I'd lost my remote after falling asleep, but I figured, it can't be that bad. After about 30 seconds, I spent the next five minutes in a blind seething rage as I searched frantically for my remote. What a saw of that movie was so abysmal it made me want to rip through my mattress. If Pluto Nash was worse than that they must use it for torture purposes.

Doesn't "Del Toro" mean "one who talks bull?"

Posted by: BWeaves at July 22, 2010 5:20 PM

You know what? I really hate it when people throw the term "sellout" around, as if artists were forced to cater to our tastes every single fucking time they decide to do something.

So what if Del Toro wants to do a Disney film? Is it bad for him to become one of those directors? Do we not like him anymore because he wants to make a Disney film? Is this a step down for him? I don't think so, sir. Any experience is a good experience, especially when it comes to filmmaking.

Making films is really hard (actually, it's REALLY fucking hard), and sure, it's nice to be involved in a thought-provoking project (it's even better if you penned the script and you're the one bringing your vision to the big screen), but every now and then it's nice to do something light. It can even be fun. And hey, the money doesn't hurt. Even if the money is Del Toro's main motivation, I really don't give a shit. I'm not gonna feel insulted because Guillermo Del Toro wants to direct a Disney film. I'm just happy that he's directing. Maybe it's more than just the money. Maybe he wants to work with Disney.

If I had the kind of freedom he has, trust me: not all my films would be about the dark secrets of a child's soul or humanity's inevitable demise. There would probably be hand puppets involved, and lots of bad dubbing.

Anyway, what I was trying to get at: not making smart movies all the time and doing something light for Disney doesn't make you a sellout. At least I don't think so.

And I'm sorry if I sound bitchy, but tonight will be my one-week NO SMOKING anniversary and I'm still feeling withdrawal.

Posted by: Sofía at July 22, 2010 5:32 PM

Agreed, Sofía.

And best wishes on the No Smoking. It DOES get easier. Just stick with it (I quit nine years ago.)

Posted by: Rykker at July 22, 2010 5:37 PM

Sofia: I'm at 10 days. Hang in there.

Posted by: TylerDFC at July 22, 2010 5:43 PM

Fuck and You, it's The Haunted Fucking Mansion, Asshole!

Posted by: Jay at July 22, 2010 5:49 PM

I don't know. I'm sorta intrigued-slash-possibly-excited by the idea.
We all should've known Disney was going to try another Haunted Mansion flick since the previous one was such a disaster. At least now it might turn out watchable, if not good. I have a lot of faith in Del Toro and there's so many ghosts and possibilities with the Haunted Mansion.

On a personal note, I think it's just a shame that Jennifer Tilly probably won't be returning. I love her and her voice and she doesn't get nearly enough work (especially in *good* projects...). I thought it was so sad when I read that she had said it was one of her favorite roles as it was practically the only one she wasn't asked to lose weight for (since only her head was appearing).

will nathaniel parker be naked? cuz, i'd pay to see that. (consults checking account) crap.

Posted by: blondefire at July 22, 2010 5:57 PM

Come on now, man's gotta eat, right?

Isn't Martin Scorcese working on his first family friendly movie, Hugo Cabret? In 3D no less.

Posted by: John W at July 22, 2010 5:58 PM

What the shit. Mountains of Madness, Del Toro. Mountains of Madnesss

Posted by: Steph at July 22, 2010 6:07 PM

What a fuckin' hero *clap**clap**clap* enjoy your cash fatso.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 22, 2010 6:08 PM

When asked why this movie he said, "Bitch, I gotta eat." Then he loudly said, "Del Toro OUT!" dropped the mike and walked off the stage with two scantily-clad women. It was actually pretty pimp for a Disney panel.

Posted by: HoJu at July 22, 2010 6:27 PM

He left The Hobbit for this trite bullshit? The Hobbit is entertainment for the whole family. If there isn't a positive move toward making At the Mountains of Madness he is fucking dead to me.

Posted by: The Kilted Yaksman at July 22, 2010 6:58 PM

I apologize, Sofía. Poor choice of words. By "sell out," what I really meant was, "Make a shitty family movie in exchange for lots of cash."

And Nicotine lozenges are definitely the way to go. I've been on them for 6 years now, or almost twice as many years as I smoked. They're fantastic!

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at July 22, 2010 7:13 PM

Actually, del Toro has stated in recent interviews that no studio wants to make Mountains of Madness, so he's basically given up on it (yeah...my heart was broken). But this...THIS?!?! He said he was gonna do a remake of Frankenstein next! What happened?! What happened?!?!?! Christ, I'd rather he do The fucking Hobbit! And I couldn't care less about that Tolkien geek crap. But, Christ, at least there's some prestige behind that...unlike a god damn Disney Ride: The Movie...I don't give a fuck which one it is. This is a dark day for del Toro fans.

Posted by: Case at July 22, 2010 7:15 PM

Ah, and so we come to another earth shattering revelation about our mighty overlord, a full blown nico-head. I wonder what other degenerate proclivities affect his judgment.

Hey Rowles, you like animals? Do they...like you?

Ah?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 22, 2010 7:18 PM

No seriously. It's 2003. That shit stunk up this entire decade and I wasn't 6 when it came out.

And good luck with quitting, Sofia!

Posted by: Kayanne at July 22, 2010 7:18 PM

I AM ON NICOTINE LOZENGES!!!

I've been using them, but less and less each day 'cause I don't want them to become my new addiction. I've taken a liking to running in Central Park, sometimes even twice a day. It's paying off, 'cause I saw Steve Carrell the other morning, and it's also healthy and all that shit.

My goal: to be featured in Pajiba's Ab-Off '11.

Posted by: Sofía at July 22, 2010 7:41 PM

Also, I couldn't even finish The Hobbit. I don't care for Narnia. I mean, Middle Earth.

Posted by: Sofía at July 22, 2010 7:43 PM

You don't suppose he's making this because - GASP! - nobody wants to finance In The Mountains of Madness?!

The math is simple: another hit = easier to greenlight a risky horror flick.

Posted by: HoJu at July 22, 2010 7:59 PM

I have a hard time disliking Del Toro no matter what, ever since I heard him exclaim, "THE FAT MAN IS A GEEK!" in that accent of his.

Posted by: Sefa at July 22, 2010 8:24 PM

The Haunted Mansion is a freaky ride. If anyone (who Hollywood has embraced) can make it work as a film, it's del Toro. I reserve the right to turn on this project in a heartbeat, but for now, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Posted by: Robert at July 22, 2010 8:53 PM

Eesh, that was a bitchy last comment. But it worked! Ohh, y'all should not reward my bad behavior. If pouting and throwing a temper tantrum gets me attention, I'll probably start abusing this power. Next time I there's trade news that annoys me, I'm knocking over my sippy cup.

Posted by: Kayanne at July 22, 2010 8:54 PM

I am cheering and whistling for you Sofi! Great points and great job with quitting.

I don't consider it a dark day at all - shit, Del Toro might make the best damned Disney movie we've ever seen.

Posted by: Cindy at July 22, 2010 11:31 PM

so, you are accusing the guy who made two mainstream giganticus budget hellboy movies of selling out? right.

I really liked devil's backbone, chronos, not so much, and mimic was fun.I loved pan's labyrinth as one of contemporary cinema's masterpieces.

But the hellboy movies were forgettable fluff, action special effect set pieces. they are popular and made money, and give him hollywood credit to do other things. i suppose if i was fifteen and sullen, i would have described the hellboy movies as "selling out".

and who's to say he isn't using a hollywood reboot to give us a ripping haunted house tale.

you have to love del toro. this is the man who watched The Thing and said "this is great fun, it's like being at the soccer match". Disney doesn't really know what it is in for.

Posted by: idleprimate at July 23, 2010 4:55 AM

oh, and as a postscript, i will pay anything to watch any dreck he makes, if it funds his version of in the mouth of madness.

Posted by: idleprimate at July 23, 2010 4:57 AM

“The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years." - Peter Jackson. Del Toro left the Hobbit because it was stuck in limbo, and Mountains of Madness isn't being made because studios see a (potentially) awful family film as a safer financial bet. The guy doesn't have the ability to hand-pick his projects of choice and magically have them funded.
