David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Will Be ...

David Fincher has finally selected his Lisbeth Salander, folks. It’s Rooney Mara, perhaps better known as Kate Mara’s little sister. Or not known at all. She was in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. She’s in Fincher’s upcoming The Social Network. She was named after her great-grandfather, Art Rooney, who founded the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as Timothy Mara, who founded the New York Giants.

She looks like this.

I have no idea if she’ll make a good Lisbeth Salander. She didn’t make a very good Nancy in the New Nightmare, but then again, that wasn’t a very good movie. All I know is that, with a trilogy expected, she’s even more set for life than before. Also, she’ll get to make out with Daniel Craig.

There are worse fates.

I like her looks, but she's no Noomi Rapace. Fucking Hollywood...

I don't care how she does, she will better than Scarlet Johanasson or Kristen Stewart.

Posted by: Nimue at August 16, 2010 2:36 PM

In this photo she looks like Megan Dodds. No matter. They still should not be remaking this. But since Daniel Craig is in it, I know I'll eventually see it.

fuck you that was a good movie

How old is she? She looks YOUNG -- as in, so young that it's going to be creepy to see her make out with Daniel Craig.

Posted by: jimbob at August 16, 2010 2:49 PM

Looking young is actually a good thing for this particular role. In the novels, it's made very clear that Lisbeth looks extremely young and fragile, despite being neither.

I enjoyed the original three movies, and thought Noomi Rapace did a good job, but my one complaint with her was that she actually looked too old and tough. Part of the reason shit happens to Lisbeth in the novels is because of her appearance of fragility.

In her defense, I think she did a decent job in NOES. It was the movie that was a big steaming pile of anal gland residue with extra child molestation for your modern dollar.

Posted by: Courtney at August 16, 2010 3:11 PM

In the books Salander is 21 or 22 and yes, it's very creepy that she makes out with a guy in his mid-forties. But there is horribly age-inappropriate sex between many of the "good" people in all the books which is odd for a guy who supposedly was really bothered by how women are treated sexually.

Posted by: PaddyDog at August 16, 2010 3:12 PM

In the books, Salander is 25 and 26. Maybe 27 in the 3rd one, don't know.

I liked the idea of Emma Watson as Lisbeth.

I'm really starting to think that Fincher is going off the deep end in his old age. Benjamin Button? Making a movie about Facebook? With Timberlake? and now this girl from the new Freddy Kreuger movie? Really? That's not the Fincher I know and love. Please come back. Because at this point there is nothing else but your name even remotely making want to see this adaptation of the excellent books. And that sliver of hope is becoming smaller and smaller.

It doesn't matter who plays Lisbeth, since these US remakes likely won't do well outside of America.
I'd be surprised if they did.

There's only one Lisbeth,Noomi Rapace.

AhHAHAhee giggle snort. That is so true. I wish I'd saved my modern dollar and whipped out some of my 80s (Monopoly) dollars to rewatch the original.

Really, she's Kate Mara's little sister? Hmm. I like Kate Mara. I guess that's all I can say about that.

They haven't even started filming and I'm already sick of hearing about this movie.

Posted by: snapnhiss at August 16, 2010 5:14 PM

. . . she's no Noomi Rapace.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is? That girl was excellent in "Dragon" and I can't imagine anybody getting even close to her performance. I really can't understand why this movie is being remade. Daniel Craig is not a good choice and neither is this child. But, whatever, that's Hollywood for you. They don't think Americans want to watch a movie with captions and they are wrong. If the movie is good, it doesn't matter that it's foreign.

And, agreed snapnhiss, I'm sick of hearing about this thing also, and it's not even out until late next year. Hopefully, I will have seen all three of the originals by then because there is no way I'm going to see an American-style remake.

Posted by: mslewis at August 16, 2010 5:56 PM

What Joker and mslewis said. However, I think they could've done a lot worse than Daniel Craig (and Robin Wright as Erika).

Posted by: Snrub at August 16, 2010 6:26 PM

Trying to picture this girl doing Lisbeth-esque things.
But really, the most memorable scenes from the first pic are the rape scene and it's ensuing revenge scene.
Aaaaand this chick ain't gonna pull those off. No sir-ee.

I'm disappointed, but only because of the missed Emma Watson or Natalie Portman or Ellen Page or Carey Mulligan nude scenes. Yes, I'm very shallow.

Posted by: the other greg at August 16, 2010 6:57 PM

The Other Greg
- pretty sure a Carey Mulligan rape scene would traumatise me. 90% chance I would actually weep.

Posted by: The Only New Zealander at August 16, 2010 7:11 PM

Shoulda been Emma Watson.

Posted by: oskar at August 16, 2010 7:30 PM

It should have been Snoop from The Wire as Lisbeth Salander. I know, I know, but the book is not terribly specific about the race of Lisbeth's mother, although we know her father is white. If Jeff Goldblum can have a black daughter in the Jurrasic Park movie, why not a black Swede?

And consider Snoop staring down someone outside of Marlo's gang, and tell me that isn't the look from Lisbeth as described in the books.

Yes there is the Balitmore street accent too, but I bet she could act through that as well.

Posted by: FillOaks at August 16, 2010 8:59 PM

MM, I used to dislike Kate Mara, too, until I saw her on The Late Late Show fairly recently. She was awkward and charming. I kind of love her now.

If I'm not mistaken, their other great-whatever-grandfather founded the New York Giants, so.

Posted by: Sefa at August 16, 2010 9:20 PM

Oh! I actually said I *liked* Kate Mara. She's pretty but not plastic-gorgeous and she actually seems to put effort into her acting performances. Such as.

Posted by: MM at August 17, 2010 2:38 AM

Based on that one picture, yeah I can see it. She needs a haircut though. I'm just glad it isn't Ellen Page. Also, Daniel Craig is Blomkvist? Why didn't I know this? Good casting there.

Posted by: Steph at August 17, 2010 3:55 PM

I'll second the vote for Snoop from The Wire.

I would also like to mention that as a female in my mid-twenties, I find something wrong with someone my age making out with a much older man. They're sexy, and I married one.

Posted by: SilverFox at August 18, 2010 12:44 PM

She HARDLY looks anorexic.
