Damn 'Ghostbusters 3'! Why Didn't You Say So In the First Place? Now You Have Our Attention

The development on Ghostbusters 3 has gone on for so long now, and so many rumors and changes have been made over the years, that whenever I see another Ghostbusters 3 headline, my eyes glaze over. Oh, what’s that? Bill Murray has denied being involved again? You mean, like the other 7,000 times?

With the death of Harold Ramis, however, development has actually begun to take shape in a real and meaningful way. Earlier this week, Ivan Reitman dropped out as director, and without Murray, Reitman, or Ramis, maybe everyone just decided, “Screw it! Reboot!” Now there’s an actual release date in 2015, and — according to Nikki Finke, who has been reduced to breaking all her news on Twitter — maybe the only two directors on the planet that could get us excited about Ghostbusters 3 are in talks to replace Reitman.

Who might those directors be? Chris Miller and Phil Lord, otherwise known as the directing duo who did the impossible by making outstanding movies out of a children’s book (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), a late 80’s show no one gave a crap about (21 Jump Street) and a movie based on a toy (Lego: The Movie) that everyone on the planet loves, and for good reason: It’s outstanding.

Basically, these are the guys you want when it comes to otherwise impossible projects. They know exactly how to pay lip service to the franchise, and also make it fresh and new. These guys, we trust. If Hollywood has to reboot classic movies (and clearly, it does), no one is better suited than Miller and Lord. They know their sh*t, and more importantly, they know how to please everyone, especially the audiences.

So, bring on Ghostbusters 3, with or without any of the original cast. Miller and Lord are going to get it right.
