Did that Cruel Bastard John Barrowman Mislead Us?

Early last month, John Barrowman — who plays Captain Jack Harkness in both Doctor Who and its spin-off, Torchwood — teased us by saying that he’d be returning to Cardiff for secret unspecified reasons. As the Internet is wont to do, we jumped to conclusions! We assumed Captain Jack was returning to Doctor Who for the Christmas Special, and what better time than in-between companions?! Alternatively, we thought, maybe he’s appearing in the new Whoniverse series Class?!

Or maybe he’s doing another project related to Torchwood, the otherwise excellent series that was ruined by Mekhi Phifer in the British-American co-production, Miracle Day.

That is indeed the case. John Barrowman is joining Gareth David-Lloyd and Eve Myles in a three-part miniseries, Torchwood: Outbreak, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the series.

Great news, right?

Well, kind of. It’s an audio -only miniseries, which one can purchase as a box-set.

‘This is pretty much what everyone has wanted from day one,’ says producer James Goss. ‘Torchwood’s holy trinity reunited in a full-cast box-set … Torchwood: Outbreak is available to pre-order today for just £20 on both CD and to download. The four-disc box-set will also include an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary, with CD orders also containing a complimentary digital copy, available immediately upon the set’s release.

Is that really what we’ve all wanted from day one? Because I think what we really wanted was to see Captain Jack return to Doctor Who, another televised season of Torchwood that might somehow redeem that dismal Miracle Day, or even that sexually-explicit Captain Jack/Ianto romantic comedy we’ve been clamoring for.

An audio box-set seems rather anti-climactic, doesn’t it? But again, Barrowman has always been a tease:
