Confirmed: Columbia Pictures Remaking Overboard

Back in December, we first reported exclusively that Columbia Pictures was remaking the 1987 Gary Marshall film, Overboard. We also reported that it was from a script by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. That has been confirmed. At the time, there was an offer out to Katherine Heigl to take the lead in the pic. Heigl clearly decided against accepting that offer.

Instead, THR is reporting that Jennifer Lopez has decided to take the role originated by Goldie Hawn.

The end result, my guess, is that we’ll all probably start to appreciate Goldie Hawn a lot more after seeing J.Lo’s version. I mean, really? JLo? The original Overboard was throwaway fare — a great TBS Saturday afternoon offering. But with JLo?

That’s dispiriting.

For those unfamiliar, Overboard was a moderately successful 80’s comedy. Goldie Hawn starred as a brattish rich woman who falls off her yacht and is taken to the hospital by a local, morally challenged carpenter, played by Kurt Russell. When she wakes up with amnesia, he convinces her she is his wife, thereby getting a free housekeeper for his four boys.

Will Smith and his Overbrook production company are producing the remake. There’s no word on who the male cast member will be, though I do have to say, Matthew McConaughey fits the mold. But, didn’t he and Kate Hudson already remake Overboard and wasn’t it called Fool’s Gold?

Sometimes, I really hate Hollywood. That is all.

Man alive I though that header pic was Jessica Alba. I had to stare at it for a long time to see JLo. Not, that that is bad mind you. I'd still hit that.

Not that it makes too much of the difference, but Goldie's character was actually picked up by a garbage scow ("Hookah, Hookah means seal in Portuguese")- Kurt's character didn't take her to the hospital.

Aww, man! This is one of my favorite "randomly watch when it's on and I'm bored" movies! Why does JLo have to get all up on that? Son of a B!

I'm so happy JLo is back to her acting gig! I've missed you Jenny From The Block!

I never saw the original film due to coming down with an attack of taste whenever I'd consider watching it, but isn't the premise -- a man convincing an amnesiac she's his wife -- kinda rapey? Especially when everything about it implies that she had it coming for being such an uppity bitch? At best, it seems like a pretty distasteful idea for a comedy.

I'm all in favor of JLo doing this as long as *SPOILERS* she goes overboard the way Naomi Watts did at the end of "Funny Games."

Heigl too.

Oh shit, here we go again

Craig - It was pretty much a family movie, and I don't recall any sexual content. The guy had done some work for the rich lady which she refused to pay him for, so he figured she could do some housework for him to even it out. In retrospect it's still kind of questionable, but I've always liked this movie. But it's hardly noteworthy enough that a remake is necessary and/or wanted. (Even by people who think remakes are ever necessary and/or wanted, which doesn't include me.)

Jay, this movie just crosses the line of taste. Kurt Russel basically BRAINWASHES her and KIDNAPS her, forcing her to act as slave labor to care for his vile children. And then she falls in love with him? Hellooo, can anyone spell Stockholm Syndrome?

Vile! Degrading! DISGUSTING! I cannot believe Hollywood has the gall to remake such horrid cinema! Anyone who watches this remake is a terrible person!

RABBLERABBLERABBLE!

J-Lo, stop trying to make your career comeback happen. IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Expressing disgust for the original Overboard requires nothing so precious and grandiose as the beloved misogyny card: you can cut this film to pieces with a much blunter knife than that and still have work left over for the next day. Saving the surgical instruments for finer meats than this.

I've been hoping for years that if Hollywood insists on continuing to put their weight behind remakes (spoiler: they do) that they go from remaking shitty old films into shitty new films and maybe try remaking shitty old films into good new films. It sounds like they're halfway there.

Actually, 'overboard' describes Jennifer Lopez in so many whys this might work.

ways*! Ways, damnit. fucking aliens need to get out of my head and stop messing with my typing.

Nimue, I actually thought that it was a pic of Thandie Newton. After staring at it for a few minutes, I kind of still see Thandie more than J.Lo...
