Joel McHale + Chevy Chase = Please Let This Work

Watch the "Community" Pilot Online / Daniel Carlson

The few clips I’ve seen of this fall’s NBC lineup leave me about as cold as you’d expect: The ads for “Trauma” are amazingly bad, and I know there’s another one-word medical drama they’re doing that’s the same level of ugh. Only the brief spots for “Community,” starring Joel McHale, have given me hope that all is not lost for the network. McHale is almost consistently awesome as the host of E!’s “The Soup,” a program that should be transferred to another network so we can get rid of E! once and for all.

Anyway, for anyone else interested in “Community,” you’re in luck: You can view the pilot online by clicking here and becoming a fan of the show on Facebook. It’s a decent bit of new-media marketing from NBC, so have at it. The series premieres Sept. 17 at 9:30/8:30.

I loved it.
Great casting and great writing.
Joel McHale is amazing.
The one show I'm actually looking forward to seeing.

I think about Joel McHale while I'm doing naughty things. He's like a straight guy version of Michael K.

A classmate of mine's significant other is the show runner/creator of the show. He also helped out on a web series entitled "Yacht Rock," which I highly recommend.

I've watched it a second time... there is enough subtle humor here that you tend to miss a bit of it, so it bears re-watching.
I thought that Chase's character on "Chuck" was a bit "too Chevy Chase" to be effective in the part. The producers/directors have (apparently) reigned him in a bit and he actually made me remember why I loved him in Caddyshack.
I hope this one lasts for more than a few episodes. Given time, it could be a huge hit for NBC.

Yes, but is it funnier than the awesomely delicious gigglefest that is Two and a Half Men?

I don't see Charlie Sheen in mid calf socks and loafers and this perplexes me.

Me and Mrs. G saw Joel McHale's live act earlier this year, and while it was okay (essentially The Soup redux sprinkled with some passable attempts at actual stand-up) I came away impressed with the man. He did a meet-and-greet after the show (price: one t-shirt, which my daughter now proudly wears), and it was midnight by the time we worked our way through the line to him. He had just spent an inordinate amount of time being harassed by a falling-down drunk couple, but we were able to cut wise with him about the sots and he then let me record a brief segment with my wife for her small-town radio show. At this point he could come out as a "birther" and I'd probably still be a fan...

Oh. You have to be on Facebook to watch the pilot? Fuck your "new-media marketing", NBC. I'll go find it on LimeWire before I subject myself to that Facebook shit again.

Joel McHale is my TV crush. The man is hilarious and was a college athlete and doesn't seem to trade too much on his very good looks. Sigh.

Seems to have a bit of a fivehead going in the banner picture.

Was he "Max Headroom"?

You did your best to numb the pain, AvB, but Facebook just proved to me social networking is a new and improved way to annoy the hell out of people.

A few nice surprises, I like the main chick, and no one was annoying so score. You're Michael Douglas in all of his movies, ha ha.

Definitely on of the better pilots, in a while.
