'Community' Is Back in January, NBC Cans Two Shows, CBS Picks Up 3, and Fox Picks Up 1

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | October 18, 2013 | Comments ()

NBC announced the cancellations of Ironside and Welcome to the Family. Community will return in January with back-to-back episodes, presumably in place of <>Welcome to the Family.

Meanwhile, CBS has picked up full season orders on Mom, We’re the Millers, and Crazy Ones, the three top-rated new sitcoms of the season.

Finally, Fox has picked up a full season order of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, despite low ratings, suggesting that it has faith in the quality of the show. (It has not, however, picked up a full season of Dads yet).

Have a great weekend.

Screw you NBC. I liked Welcome to the Family. It was getting better every week.

  • Anon33

Welcome to the Family was SO BAD. Oh haha teen pregnancy is funny! And then the mom got pregnant too??? Ridiculous.

  • That's the story on Mom, too. But they have Allison Janney, so it's all good.

  • Three_nineteen

So they are both ripping off Father of the Bride Part II?

  • Sara_Tonin00

well...that does happen...There was a prep school near me, and I had always thought the two star hockey players were brothers. Turned out they were uncle and nephew, though only a year apart in age.

  • Ben

How has Fox not renew Dads, from what I have read it is right up their alley.

  • e jerry powell

Ho, hum. NBC screws the pooch yet again.

Who keeps pitching them shows that ABSOLUTELY NOBODY WANTS TO SEE and THEY KEEP PICKING UP ANYWAY?

Maybe they're getting lucky with Blacklist, but even that remains to be seen. I've turned into a clock watcher on that show, and it's becoming more and more disappointing with each week that fails to change up the clock structure.

We're the Millers is getting good ratings? I've had funnier hemorrhoids.

  • sourbob

Worst of all, CBS picked up this piece of crap instead of Greg Garcia's other pilot, the hilarious Rupert Grint/Stephen Fry single camera vehicle SuperClyde.

  • Al Borland's Beard

Is it a TV adaptation of this past summer's Jason Sudekis/Jennifer Aniston comedy?

  • kirbyjay

I think it's just "The Millers" and I want it to succeed while never watching it because Cochran from Survivor is a writer on the show and I want that darling nerd to have some success in his life and maybe get laid. I have soft spot for pasty white Irish nerd boys.

  • Welldressed

Exactly. This is the show that reduced the fantastic Margo Martindale to a series of honest-to-god fart jokes in its premiere. It has reduced three fantastic actors to rubble and I loathe its existence.

  • Wrestling Fan

    Ironside is canceled?

    DAMMIT, NO!!!

  • sourbob

Ah, so you were the one watching.

    Happy Community and B99 news.

In January, NBC is also premiering Chicago PD. They already have a show called Chicago Fire. I'm going to go ahead and pitch them Chicago EMT and call it a day.

  • e jerry powell

Hmmm. Well, they already had "Third Watch" cross over with ER, which was in Chicago...

At least they can't do another Chicago hospital show, what with ER having run against Chicago Hope on CBS, and the Chicago cops were already co-opted by Fox for Jennifer Beals.

That person in blackface is creeping me out.

  • Aaron Schulz

i think hes supposed to be a drow, and it really goes to show you that somethings are best left to book descriptions.

  • BWeaves

What's a drow? (Nevermind, I looked it up.)

I thought he (she?) was a Keebler Elf dipped in chocolate.

  • F'mal DeHyde

I thought he was supposed to be a smurf but in any case, he *does* look really creepy. That's Chang from Community, by the way.

  • Milly

Not such a surprise for B99, surely? I say that as in the UK at least the rights were fought over and bought prior to the program even being shown outside of trade events.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a guaranteed additional cost if more episodes were produced, so it makes sense to make more of a well crafted comedy.

  • John W

    Crazy Ones? Wow.

  • Yaaaaaay, Brooklyn Nine Nine! I really hope it picks up more viewers, that show is pretty great.

  • Blake

YES!. At least Andre Braugher will get 1 season's work this time.

  • e jerry powell

Didn't he get one season's work last time? At least they burned all the episodes in the same timeslot instead of just dumping the show outright.

  • Blake

    A short season, but true.

  • michaelceratops

Wait, what's Welcome to the Family? Is that a show? I've never heard of it. Are there people in it? Is this a joke?

  • I watched five minutes of it while looking around for my remote after Parks and Rec ended and, just....eeeeesh. Those were some offensively bad five minutes.

  • Something about 2 teens having a baby and their families don't get alongzzzzzzzzz...

  • IngridToday

I haven't heard of most of these shows.

  • Arran

Not only does B99 have a full season, it has the post-Superbowl slot. So FOX obviously REALLY wants the show to work. Which is a nice thing.
