26 years and 8 sequels later, Clive Barker is getting the original Hellraiser band back together for a remake. What do I mean? I mean Barker is calling on the original Pinhead, Doug Bradley, to join him. Here’s the news according to Barker’s facebook page:

HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch. What can I tell you about it? Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed , I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing . I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here ,because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent ,me. My very best wishes to you all,my friends. Clive.

You know how I feel about remakes. I am, at least, heartened by Barker’s avowal that the film won’t be awash in CGI. I’m excited to see what new practical effects horrors they cook up. Otherwise, well, a remake feels unnecessary. As ever.

I'm excited about this remake, especially if they also plan to release Barker's "The Scarlet Gospels" at the same time.

And now I'm just wasting perfectly good suffering.

    Suffering is never wasted.

Faustus: How comes it then that thou art out of hell?
Mephistopheles: Why this is hell, nor am I out of it.

Most remakes are pointless, but this one gives me a little hope. Not because I think it will be better than the original, but because it may open the door for Barker himself to create a new set of sequels to replace the decidedly mediocre ones we got the first time.

Not sure how I feel about a Hellraiser remake. Back in ye olde dayes when the first trailer came out, I was sure the movie was going to terrify me. The trailer was terrifying, but the movie was kind of dull. And dumb? I guess I just missed the boat on that one.

  • I think the scarier parts are when the mom is bringing lovers from all over New Orleans back to that upstairs room to be killed and sucked up by the evil spirit of the brother-in-law. Ironically enough, Pinhead and his homeys feel like the just rewards for those two.

  • Is it just me, or is that Facebook quote kind of rough? Since Barker makes his living writing, you'd think he'd be better at using paragraphs and commas.

  • I've noticed this with a number of professional authors, people whose work I love and respect, and I find it deeply disquieting.

Facebook is kind of a shit on formatting though, it's shift+enter to start a new line and enter posts what you were typing etc

Doesn't excuse the lack of comma's though.
