In the wake of the terrorist threats that Guardians of the Peace threatened against movie theaters that screen Seth Rogen’s The Interview, Carmike Cinemas became the first movie chain last night to opt out of screening the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That’s nearly 3,000 screens in 41 states.

On the one hand, it’s disappointing to see the theater chain essentially buckle to the demands of the terrorists. On the other hand, I get it. Should Guardians of the Peace follow through on their threats, Carmike Cinemas doesn’t want to be held liable for violence, and for simple morality reasons, maybe they don’t want to be indirectly responsible for it, either.

At a certain point — given the amount of damage the Sony leak has caused the studio — when does it become not worth it anymore? According to The L.A. Times, that point may be arriving, as Sony is reportedly considering cancelling the Christmas Day release all together. The $75 million that Sony may have to write off to cover the cost of the movie and its promotion may be a huge loss, but it would obviously pale in comparison to cost of the loss of lives should Guardians of Peace follow through on their threats (which, as of yet, aren’t credible).

It’s a sh*tty situation all around.
