I Aim to Misbehave

It’s not exactly what you think, but Nathan Fillion — who is finally on a show that’s lasted until its second season — will be reprising his Captain Mal role from “Firefly,” in a matter of speaking. For the Halloween episode of “Castle,” Fillion’s Richard Castle will be dressed as, well, his former “Firefly” self.

And if you’re not watching “Castle,” you really should be. I knocked it after the pilot episode, but I re-reviewed it over the summer after watching the entire first season. It’s not exactly “The Wire,” or anything, but it may very well be the best procedural on television now. There’s not a lot of novelist turned murderers who exclaim, “Best. Murder. Ever!” The cases themselves are mediocre, but the banter is gold. And if Nathan Fillion is not your idea of eye candy, Stana Katic is, hands down, the hottest female cop in the history of television.

Anyway, here’s a grainy image (via Fireflyfans) of what you can expect on the October 26th episode (big H/T to bistro):

Dammit Rowles! Don't go getting me excited like that only to destroy me and leave me a devastated husk of a man!

The return of Captain Tightpants. Gonna be a lot of occupied bunks on the evening of the 26th.

Mmmmmm. Those thighs. I think I need to watch Castle.

Posted by: figgy at October 15, 2009 9:06 PM

Is "hottest" some kind of code for "least convincing?" Did I miss that memo?

The crimes aren't mediocre, they're ABYSMAL. Plot holes you could fly an asteroid through and fridge logic left, right and center.

The banter only sometimes, barely redeems the rest, as is not without flaws.

Posted by: trippdup at October 15, 2009 9:13 PM

Trippdup> Nope 'hottest' is some kind of code for 'stupidly gorgeous, and I'd stab her for her coat collection'.

You're absolutely right about the shows flaws. But I'm addicted to this disgusting crack, I really am.

Why do you build me up, buttercup baby?

If I hadn't already heard this news I would kill you rowles. Don't fuck with a fan's fantasies.

UNF Nathan! GET IN ME!!!

Posted by: Vi at October 15, 2009 9:43 PM

trippdup, I agree with you about "least convincing." Sometimes I wonder if she's trying to be an actress being a cop. But then I get distracted by her ridiculous eyeliner.
In other news, I just spent 25 minutes "reading" this "post" (aka looking at the pretty pictures). I had to be roused from my reverie by a loud vacuum.

Posted by: esme at October 15, 2009 9:53 PM

Sciencegeek, I'll be your backup and help dump the body if you'll share.

Posted by: jM at October 15, 2009 10:00 PM

Hmmm... I'm sure I won't earn my hipster merit badge for mentioning this, but Nathan Fillion was on Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place for more than two seasons. He was the titular girl's boyfriend, Johnny the firefighter.

Posted by: Hipster Mongoose at October 15, 2009 10:37 PM

Y'all realize that "Castle" will don a cowboy hat at some point and the Mal Reynolds fantasy will evaporate like...like all our Firefly hopes and dreams. (Remember them?)

And if he isn't wearing the super-silly "futuristic" suspenders, then he isn't dressed as Mal, full stop.

Posted by: Jerce at October 15, 2009 10:52 PM

Any and all 'Firefly' souveniers, including props, vehicles, scripts, and Nathan Fillion himself, should be declared as world treasures and placing within force fields to protect them against the effects of time and wear. It's our only hope when the aliens come demanding proof of a higher consciousness.

Posted by: karstark at October 15, 2009 11:10 PM

Fuck you for getting my hopes up, Dustin. That was almost the best news since Barack Obama beat McCain and Palin, and now it's ruined.

Posted by: George at October 15, 2009 11:58 PM

No, Hipster Mongoose, I think the fact that Fillion was on a show with Ryan Reynolds is relevant to many Pajibans.

Posted by: Miranda at October 16, 2009 12:24 AM

I really like this show, but I miss the way they opened each show last season, with the body of the episode's victim displayed in strangely beautiful way. I don't know, I liked it.

Posted by: Soothsayer at October 16, 2009 12:27 AM

According to his twitter feed, this won't be the first time Fillion's snuck a Firefly-related easter egg into Castle. It seems to be a hobby of his.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at October 16, 2009 1:24 AM

I have become a massive Castle fan, this just seals the deal.

And yes, Stana Katic is, well... bunk!

And when she gets older, the actress who plays Castle's daughter is going to do serious heartbreak damage to people.

Posted by: trib at October 16, 2009 1:33 AM

Nice, thanks gp, that was a delightful surprise. :)

I don't watch Castle and probably won't, but love Fillion and hope he finds a role worthy of him. I vote Fillion for the potential Rockford Files tv reboot.

Posted by: Mebe at October 16, 2009 1:44 AM

Uh, Homer... towel rack.
(done in the voice of Bart)

Which is code for, "and the bold tag is open. Again!"
(done in the voice of Pete, from Shaun).

I don't remember much from yesterday, but I woke up this morning to find that I now have a cool tattoo of a bajingo on my forehead.
SO I'm guessing I was drunk-posting, again, here, yesterday...

Posted by: Rykker at October 16, 2009 2:55 AM

Hee! This might be fun.
I love that they're letting him do shout-outs, and this is a mega-shout.
As for the show - he deserves better, but hey, at least he's on our screens.

Posted by: Tarn at October 16, 2009 6:22 AM

Anything that brings Malcolm Reynolds back to television gets a yay from me. However--best procedural on television?? REALLY? Castle is OK--Nathan is great, but as you said the cases are mediocre. And I think the banter is forced and awkward, born out of zero chemistry, and Stana Katic's character is nothing but an irritating stereotype. And there are hotter actors out there right now playing cops on television.

Posted by: sillymonster at October 16, 2009 7:56 AM

Have never watched Castle, but DAYUM!!! WILL be watching this epi.

'Scuse me, off to bunk

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Posted by: dammitjanet at October 16, 2009 8:37 AM

You SUCK, Rowles! What kind of a sick fuck are you? I see that title, my heart goes all aflutter, then I find out it's just Fillion's character dressing up as Mal? Big gorram deal!

You are on notice, sir. If you try to fake out Firefly fans again, the last thing you will see is my blade.

After I cut off your ear. And shoot you with Vera. And attach that weird black thing on your chest...you know, that thing Niska had made, that pushed tendrils into Mal's chest and electrocuted him, or, I don't know, did something painful, anyway...the point is you will suffer! You can post all the naked Fillion butt you want, nothing makes up for your cruelty.

*looks at Fillion butt*

OK, I've reconsidered. Post some variation of Fillion butt every day and I may forgive you.

jM> As long as I get dibs on that trenchcoat she wore later in the series (the one with the kidnapped kid, maybe?), then we have ourselves a deal.

Posted by: ScienceGeek at October 16, 2009 9:28 AM

I'm with ScienceGeek. I crave those coats (I posted a few months ago about how she could possibly afford that many great coats on a cop's salary). It's my guilty pleasure every week.

Posted by: PaddyDog at October 16, 2009 9:45 AM

Castle is gold for the sheer fact that while the crimes aren't that original (and really, what crime is?) the dialogue is very fun to experience. Plus the whole card game with other mystery writers thing really tickles my literary nerd gland. I've only seen a couple episodes (well, listened to the first couple of season 2 at work) and I'm convinced on starting this one from the beginning. (Also dying to read the tie in novel. Yes folks, "Heat Wave" exists and it is on Amazon. They're even doing some sort of book signing in LA on Oct. 19th with Richard Castle himself. No clue if it'll be the ghostwriter who wrote the book, or if it'll be Fillion himself.)

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at October 16, 2009 9:51 AM

So, what you're telling me is, I need to start watching this. I don't know how I'm supposed to find the time for this much television!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at October 16, 2009 9:54 AM

So, what you're telling me is, I need to start watching this.

Fillion as Rick Castle is a kind of toothless bad boy, a cheerful, winking brat. And Fillion is, of course, charming as all hell in the role. Spend an hour a week wanting to turn him over your knee. It's fun.

Posted by: Jerce at October 16, 2009 10:11 AM

Hipster Mongoose, Nathan Fillion's character on Two Guys, A Girl... wasn't a firefighter. He was a handyman or something that by shows end was their building manager. Yes, I have too much useless TV knowledge.

Posted by: UnlessTheMoonFalls at October 16, 2009 10:45 AM

heh-heh heh-heh, hipster mongoose said "titular girl."

Actually in the last season he and Pete did train to become firefighters!

Posted by: Kate at October 16, 2009 12:12 PM

Jerce, that is without a doubt, the best description of Castle I've read yet.

Posted by: Stella at October 16, 2009 12:41 PM

I crave those coats (I posted a few months ago about how she could possibly afford that many great coats on a cop's salary). It's my guilty pleasure every week.

Damn she has some great coats and jackets.
Every week I try to figure out how she affords them and have come up with a theory that goes like this:

She only has 5 blouses and 5 pairs of pants, 2 or 3 pairs of shoes and spends the rest of her clothes money on her addiction for awesome coats which she ONLY buys at discount, never retail.

That's how she affords them.

Plus she has no kids to suck all the cash from her wallet.

Posted by: jules at October 16, 2009 1:03 PM

Shiny!

Sorry it had to be said. I like Castle's interactions with his mom and kid.

I am not discerning when it comes to Fillion though. I tried to watch Desperate Housewives when he was on it.

Posted by: Jennifer at October 16, 2009 1:32 PM

I tried to watch Desperate Housewives when he was on it.

I actually finally figured out how to work my DVR in order to record DH so I could watch Fillion.

Then I'd FF through all the scenes that didn't have any Fillion.

What this means is that I actually watched roughly 11.37 minutes of that entire season of Desperate Housewives and FF-ed through all the rest of it. I very much recommend watching the show in this fashion.

Posted by: Jerce at October 16, 2009 5:29 PM

I had a feeling you were just teasing the Firefly fans, but I was willing to put my faith in you not deliberatly crushing the spark of hope your tag inspired in my soul.

Alas, I was wrong. Never again will I trust your baiting quotes or captions. Never again, sir. Never again.
