The Awesomest Goddamn Thing You'll See All Day

Captain Mal, Y'all. He Aims to Misbehave / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | October 30, 2009 | Comments (44)

I can’t believe it’s Friday, and I completely forgot to run this on the site the day after it aired. I think I probably blacked out in all the excitement, bumped my head, and completely lost memory of it. But Steven Lloyd Wilson has responsibly reminded me: Yes. Nathon Fillion dressed as a “space cowboy” on the Halloween episode of “Castle” on Monday. And yes, it’s the best 33 seconds of television this week (yeah: It’s better than anything in either of the two World Series games).

Browncoats: Get some tissue. Damn, this feels good.

It's payday and Captain Tightpants.

I'll be in my bunk.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 30, 2009 10:08 AM

"don't you think you should move on?"
"I like it."

Amen, fillion. amen.

Squeeeeee!!!!

Posted by: peachfish at October 30, 2009 10:23 AM

Good, but not better than Matsui's homerun in the bottom of the 6th. A thrilla from Godzilla! Go Yankees.

Posted by: sosumi at October 30, 2009 10:27 AM

This makes me happysadface. I'm happy, but I gots me some sadface too. Happysadface.

Posted by: Snath at October 30, 2009 10:43 AM

I like how he's very slick with the gun while he's by himself, but the minute he's in front of his daughter, he's all awkward with it, and can't even find the holster properly.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 30, 2009 10:47 AM

You stopped the scene too early. The best line in it was "candy beard". I hadn't heard that one before.

This makes me all smiley after I had to get rid of the Jehovah's Witnesses at my door.

Posted by: wsapnin at October 30, 2009 10:53 AM

Also, later in the episode there is a Firefly shout out regarding a certain prop.

"It's a nothing part until you ain't got one"

It happens when they are searching the suspect's apartment underneath a table probably about 45 minutes in.

Posted by: SkyBlue at October 30, 2009 11:01 AM

Dustin, tissue for the tears I'm shedding over Firefly's too-soon demise, or for polishing my bishop? Because I only have one box.

Posted by: Gwenn at October 30, 2009 11:09 AM

The first couple minutes of that episode was just chock full of references. Not just our beloved Firefly but Buffy as well and then an Underworld reference as well and I have to say, while I couldn't care less about the Underworld series, Castle's line about the lycans did get me chuckling.

Posted by: slagzoo at October 30, 2009 11:13 AM

If I won the lotto, I'd personally finance Serenity 2.

Even if it made $15,000 at the box office, it'd be gorram worth it...

Posted by: D-Day at October 30, 2009 11:15 AM

*Sniff* That was beautiful.

Stuff like this only makes me inwardly scream; "Why, Fox, WHY!!!?????"

Posted by: Eva at October 30, 2009 11:16 AM

And at the end of the episode - John Huertas was wearing his duds from his Generation Kill character, Poke. That really made me smile, too.

Wonder who else on the was dressed as a previous character they have portrayed.

Posted by: nidaros at October 30, 2009 11:43 AM

And Esposito's "cameo" as a Marine from Generation Kill was a nice touch too. At least for me anyway.

Posted by: chenry at October 30, 2009 11:44 AM

Had to go to about 12 other sites before I could actually watch it here at work, but it makes my dark little goth (just for Halloween) soul very, VERY happy.

Oh, and you misspelled a word in the title. I believe you meant "gorram."

Posted by: dammitjanet at October 30, 2009 11:44 AM

Not only was this squeeworthy, but he shows up to a crime scene and makes an Underworld crack when they realize the victim is a "vampire".

Can we keep this show going "forever and ever" like "Law and Order"? Pretty please with more tie in books on top?

D-Day, you get at least two tickets out of me. I switched my middle brother onto Firefly. He loved it so much that when he found out I bought him a copy of Doomsday instead of Serenity for Christmas, he shunned me for a good long while. (It's not that he didn't love Doomsday, it's just that it was Serenity.)

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at October 30, 2009 11:46 AM

Oh Fillion... I like it too. Sniff.

Posted by: AbbyNormal at October 30, 2009 11:47 AM

Say what you will about Castle being dumb (it kind of is) and the mysteries being formulaic (they are) and the woman being too pretty for a cop (hello, every show on TV: people way too pretty to be anything except... actors!), BUT:

The show has FUN with itself. They make fun of other shows. ("All the other cops do is take off their sunglasses.") They make fun of the stars' previous shows. They talk about Asteroids and Ryan Reynolds. It's goofy, and amusing, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Also, that was the best 30 seconds of TV this year.

Posted by: MM at October 30, 2009 12:01 PM

It's goofy, and amusing, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I just realized: somehow a USA show ended up on ABC.

Posted by: Vermillion at October 30, 2009 12:12 PM

Wow, I just assumed that since I watched it online after the fact that I had missed the collective Paji-orgasm over Rick Castle: Space Cowboy.
I was present for my own though.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at October 30, 2009 12:39 PM

Oh, I like it too.

Damn, I wish I was that gun in his hands.

Posted by: Cindy at October 30, 2009 12:42 PM

The mysteries on Castle are just an excuse for the goofiness and family dynamics.

Ain't nothin' wrong with that.

Oh, do I ever need to rewatch my Firefly DVDs soon. I need to hear Mal say "by my pretty flowered bonnet." It's better than chocolate.

Posted by: minorblue at October 30, 2009 12:43 PM

"I swear by my pretty flowered bonnet, I WILL END YOU" is one of the sexiest lines. Ever. If he says that at some stage on "Castle" I might just melt in front of the TV screen.

I love how Fillion throws in "Firefly" Easter eggs for the fans. He's one of the best actors out there as far as appreciating his audience - and we, in turn, love him right back.

Posted by: luthien26 at October 30, 2009 1:22 PM

"He's one of the best actors out there as far as appreciating his audience"
That seems to be true of almost the whole cast of Fire Fly but specially Fillion and Adam Baldwin.

Posted by: EricD at October 30, 2009 1:33 PM

I absolutely adore that when he says "space cowboy" we get just a touch of strings playing the Firefly theme. Maybe just 5-8 notes. Anyone else catch that?

Posted by: Leah at October 30, 2009 1:47 PM

Raises hand to Leah -- I did!

Posted by: SkyBlue at October 30, 2009 1:52 PM

I know I'm going to catch seven different kinds of shit for saying this: Serenity and Firefly were not all that.

If you're going to be a western in space, be a western in space. If you're going for sci-fi opera, do sci-fi opera. Don't try to mix the two and create a near-sighted, half-assed bastardization of the parents. Here's the reason why Firefly got cancelled: It sucked. Here's the reason Serenity didn't do huge amounts of business at the box office: Only the core group of people who watched the series paid to see the movie. Those of us who ignored it the first time around had absolutely no problems ignoring it again.

Rant over.

Bignick -- I agree with you entirely. Every word. It is as if you are speaking with my lips.

We should make out.

Posted by: superasente at October 30, 2009 4:16 PM

Did anyone else see the return of Alf on The Love Boat: The Next Wave several years back? This is like that. Except better!

Posted by: DarthCorleone at October 30, 2009 4:31 PM

And at the end of the episode - John Huertas was wearing his duds from his Generation Kill character, Poke. That really made me smile, too.

Posted by: nidaros at October 30, 2009 11:43 AM

-------------------------------------------------

Well, Seamus Dever was dressed as a doctor (he was a doc on General Hospital), and Stana Katic gave a shout-out to Frank Miller, which was her previous gig.

Posted by: Nadha at October 30, 2009 4:43 PM

Firefly naysayers: quit it. Every single post involving anyone from the cast or crew brings you out, and it never gets less annoying. Do you think that, maybe one day, we'll all come to our senses and realise the show wasn't good? "Hey, this guy on the internet told me that show I loved blew, I'm going to stop liking it now"? People enjoyed Firefly, get over it.

Posted by: James at October 30, 2009 5:20 PM

As a Firefly fan, let me just say that the first several episodes sucked. A co-irker made me go back and stick with it through Jayne's Town, and then I was hooked. Why does it take Whedon so long to get ramped up and find the right voice for each idea? It wasn't until Jayne's Town that the "job" became less important and the relationships and wordplay became more important.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 30, 2009 5:55 PM

BWeaves >> I agree with you that the relationships and wordplay were what was good about the show. However, I think those were pretty much in full effect from the beginning.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at October 30, 2009 6:54 PM

Aw... it hurts...

Posted by: Sapphiar at October 30, 2009 8:53 PM

Re Firefly criticism; it should never have been so heavily western-themed. Think about how much better it would have been if the influences were less obvious (say... Star Wars OT) and the emphasis was on storytelling and fleshing out the world.

I love Westerns and I love Sci-Fi but I only like Firefly.

Posted by: bendiagram at October 30, 2009 9:49 PM

Damn that show made me laugh. Do you ever wonder if it had lasted...let's say like X-Files...could something have gone wrong?

Posted by: me at October 31, 2009 1:28 AM

This made me very happy and then it made me very sad. I miss you, Firefly.

Posted by: Jelinas at October 31, 2009 3:55 AM

Just awesome.

Posted by: Kelly Booth at November 1, 2009 7:09 PM

The producers of Castle must be pretty good natured to let the actors and writers get away with this sort of thing (that is, if it's not their idea in the first place). That's nice.
