I Swear to God, I'm Gonna Pistol-Whip the Next Guy Who Says "Shenanigans."

I just don’t know how many more chances I can take with the boys from Broken Lizard. The comedy troupe, consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, made an incredibly divisive comedy that I adore, Super Troopers. Then they made the incredibly bad Club Dread, and followed it up with the entertaining, but somewhat disappointing Beerfest.

It’s been a decidedly mixed bag for them. Then, a few weeks ago I was able to catch The Slammin’ Salmon with Prisco and… wow. WOW. That is a bad fuckin’ movie. Monumentally so. We may have chuckled once or twice, but otherwise it was dead, stonefaced silence for 90 straight minutes. So the question is, was Super Troopers simply comedic lightning in a bottle?

Well, Broken Lizard is giving it another go. This time, they’ll play college professors (!) in Rogue Scholars for Universal Pictures, according to Dark Horizons. I wish I was more excited for the project, but I’m not. Maybe if I just have incredibly low expectations, I won’t be disappointed. Maybe? No?

Meow.

All good and well, but will hijinx ensue?

Shenanigans!

I love Super Troopers as much as I love R5 beer Thursday's but by Almighty Fuck did they Munson every other project they touched. My love for Broken Lizard would have lasted forever if only there had been a Michale Bay inspired plane crash that wiped them all out in one go. But no they had to live and taint our lives with Club Dread, Beerfest and Slammin Salmon. Whatever curse that was put on them, its a fucking good one.

I will always give them another chance. Because I love and adore Super Troopers THAT much. But they really do need to get their shit together, right quick.

What it sounds like when people defend Broken Lizard:

"You know, you kept that fish alive for a good six months. For goldfish, that's damn near a record. You even trained it to ram its head into the side of the bowl.
"But then that parrot we got you somehow ended up jammed into the garbage disposal, right after you accidently ate the gerbil and set the cat on fire.
"So, here's a puppy. But if ANYTHING happens to this pet..."

I thought Slammin Salmon did badly because it didn't get any press; a few reviews I read said it was pretty good.

I liked Beefest, but Club Dread sucked. I'll give Broken Lizard another chance.

What was "disappointing" about Beerfest? That movie was great. Club Dread was disappointing with a few bright spots and I'll take your word for it that Slammin Salmon sucked (because, wow, did that trailer look bad). So, by my count, Broken Lizard is still doing more good work than bad.

In the same way that Super Troopers is greatly enhanced by some herbal supplement, Beerfest is aided greatly by liquid refreshment and repeated viewings. No, it's not as good as Super Troopers, but it's still a serviceable comedy that got some honest belly laughs out of me and continues to do so on repeat viewings.

I can agree that the other two (which I'm not even going to mention) would best be forgotten though. So for me, the count stands at 50-50. Which means that I'll at least give their next effort a chance.

Broken Lizard is that boyfriend that you broke up with but you occasionally take his calls and you end up having sex with him because you forgot why you broke up because he used to be so charming but then you remember why when you are doing the walk of shame the next morning.

I don't know. We had some good times, but I don't want to take this call.

If you continue to badmouth Club Dread and Beerfest, then I will have to fight each and every one you. One by one.

Just saw them live last night at Santa Clara University and I have to say, the improv and sketch troupes from when I was an undergrad would've blown them to pieces. They were sadly-almost embarrassingly--unfunny. And they still relied on Super Troopers for a lot of their material. Plus they showed a teaser for the Salmon movie and if they thought that was the best clip, the movie must be horrendous. So sad.

Slammin' Salmon was pretty funny. I was slightly disappointed with beerfest, i mean it isn't horrible, i just didn't think it was that funny. but, slammin' salmon was pretty fucking funny. i was kind of hoping this rogue scholars movie would be the greek project they've talked about for a minute, but oh well hopefully it'll be funny
