Bringing Frak Back

In between this version of William Adama: kidadama.jpg

and this version:

there is a middle ground yet to be covered - and cast. Picture it with me: Galactica’s bridge, circa the years in between Caprica and Battlestar Galactica, a hot, sexy 20-something Bill Adama singing, “I’m bringing frak back, them other boys don’t know how to act, we’ll kick some toaster ass…”

SyFy has just announced a pilot order for Adama’s in-between years. Interested? I know I am. There’s something so enticing about those frakking toasters, even though they scare the crap out of me. Or rather the thought that we might one day run into their real life counterparts out here in not-TV-land scares the crap out of me. And still, I find the idea of the Cylons entirely captivating; it was easy to disappear into the Battlestar Galactica world. So the not-so-good news about this new backdoor pilot is that Ronald D. Moore is not involved, but the good news is that David Eick (Battlestar Galactica Executive Producer) and script writer Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Virtuality) are. Here’s the description for the new series, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome:

“Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”

So now all we need is a cast as great as was assembled for Moore’s Galactica, starting with a standout actor who can pass for a young Edward James Olmos and possessed of the gravitas we know came with age. It’ll be no short order to find the right person. Any suggestions? Will you watch Blood and Chrome if it’s well done? (The real question is can they get Bear McCreary again?)

I'm down with this and ready for some gritty space combat. Now they just need to wrap-up that Caprica yawnfest with the two stinky lesbos and the two ugly immortal virtua-nerds.

A two part finale should suffice.

Actually there's already been an "in between" William Adama, played by Nico Cortez in Razor. I thought he did a pretty good job, and he looked like a cross between Edward James Olmos and Jamie Bamber, which was a nice touch.

Yup, Nico SHOULD be cast on this.

This is so odd. Sci Fi had Battlestar Galactica and they treated it like the redheaded stepchild of their lineup with delayed seasons. Then they rushed it toward a finale forcing narrative leaps and odd character shifts so that the final season never really gelled. Now they keep falling all over themselves trying to recreate it. Fraking morons.

What TylerDFC said...I mean, there were episodes where I stood up and applauded (done the same with some eps of Supernatural), and commented "That was a better tv episode than the last three movies I saw!", and then they sorta lost their way last season...

They need to LEAVE IT ALONE. Let BSG rest in peace. Considering what a colossal fuck up the last hour of the last episode was, I can't watch ANYTHING that reminds me of that ridiculousness. I wish they had ALL gone up with the Hub. Oh sorry. {SPOILER!!}

I lost intrest in Caprica pretty quickly, but I would have hope for such an in-between series, particularly if it's set during the Cylon war.

I'm actually reminded a bit of the old Horatio Hornblower novels, one of the earliest version of the prequel series, where C.S. Forrester goes back and explores the early naval career of his by-then fameous sea captain. Seeing him as a shy midshipman and a quiet, distant lieutenant, and then later trying to establish himself as commander of a sloop-of-war before he became the legend he would become (both within the fictional Napoleonic world and in the real world of classic adventure novels).

Exploring the Adama's formation as a young man (rather than a background character in a Dawson's Creek-esque retcon) into the character we all know sounds like it could be an interesting experience. I'm a bit worried that Moore isn't involved, but still hopeful that it could be something worth watching again.

Forget FRAK. Bring back FRELL

Posted by: Sean at October 24, 2010 6:45 PM

I really don't think this is full-season-class material. Caprica's doing ok storywise but I see it topping out at 2 seasons before it runs dry. Blood & Chrome might max at one season - if they don't watch it this'll turn into a Star Trek class fiasco - flog the horse until all its left coughing up is Voyager and Enterprise dregs, then look to replace Rick Berman. BSG should be peddled only as long as there's top-notch stories and writing to go with it.

I totally forgot about Razor, gelis - good call. And Tyler, you're so right.

As Caprica finds its own footing, I'm struck by how much it feels as if this is what Ron Moore wanted to be doing past Season 3 of BSG. Less the space opera and more the deep faith and life drama.

So could this work as the other half of that equation -- the space drama with the frakkin' toasters and the fighting.

Question becomes: can we have interest on a third show exploring the life of William Adama? There's going to be more hours of story based on his character than even the Skywalkers!

@ Sean
Yes, a thousand times yes.

My initial reaction is that they should leave it alone, but I just can't help but want to see this. Especially if they bring Nico Cortez back. I'm really hating that name though.

Posted by: Uda at October 25, 2010 2:22 AM

I'm very much enjoying Caprica.

"All this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."

Oh, and Frak, Yes! I'll watch the hell out of it!

Posted by: gforcetwo at October 25, 2010 1:32 PM

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, huh?
That's a horrible name. Other than that, I'm interested.
And yes, Nico Cortez was fine as a young Adama, they should bring him back.

Posted by: jcollier at October 25, 2010 2:20 PM

The answer in a word is NO! They took a really cool idea in BSG and drove that bus right off a cliff. The last season was so bad, I stopped watching and just read the season synopsis on Wikipedia. I tried to watch Caprica, but that show was so incredibly uninteresting. Perhaps it picked up steam after the first few episodes, but by then I had stopped caring and watching. Now anything with the BSG association just gives me a raging case of the I-don't-give-a-craps.

Nico Cortez=William "Husker" Adama. The fact that they didn't just sign him and are even thinking of casting someone else makes me worry right off the bat. It feels like the first mistake in many more to come. SyFy always gets some things right and then keeps them from being great by not doing other obvious things. Such as: KEEP NICO CORTEZ. He nailed the part already!

Posted by: JJ at October 31, 2010 10:23 PM

Ditto on Nico Cortez. Or should I say, SO SAY WE ALL!!!
