Anglophiles, rejoice. According to Martin Freeman (portrayer of both Bilbo Baggins and “Sherlock“‘s Dr. Watson), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, himself) has a role in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. No definitive word yet on what role Cumberbatch will be playing (Freeman spilled the beans a bit early), but given his rising star, Slash Film is speculating he will have a significant role. Possibly as Bard the Bowmen.

WHAT? NO. That's ridiculous. AND WRONG. NO.

Maybe he could play a little elf. Maybe like, Legolas' boyfriend, but COME ON.

I may be overreacting.

Posted by: Figgy at May 23, 2011 2:43 PM

That is not how I ever would have pictured Bard. Might as well make him Beorn then.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at May 23, 2011 2:43 PM

I know I'm not gonna make it happen, but when dealing with love of stuff from the UK, please don't use "Anglophile", it completely ignores the contributions of Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland to the culture.
Use "Britophile*"

*Most people who live in Northern Ireland identify as British rather than Northen Irish, so it's okay.

Ugh, might as well make him Smaug.

Posted by: I Need More Allowance at May 23, 2011 2:45 PM

Okay, onto the subject matter of the post, yeah Cumberbatch does already look a lot like a LOTR Elf, and he can definitely do the aloof thing

Posted by: cockroach at May 23, 2011 2:46 PM

I admit it's been a while since I read The Hobbit, but I do not remember there being enough real characters for an announcement every freaking week. And why aren't all the Tolkien purists going absolutely apeshit about all the people supposedly being cast for whom roles are apparently being created? Are they over it too?

Ugh, might as well make him Smaug.

He said that would be one of his ideal roles, though I guess that was said tongue in cheek.

Posted by: cockroach at May 23, 2011 2:49 PM

Samantha, I'm a huge LOTR freak, and let me tell you: after dealing with Peter Jackson's crap for so long, nothing surprises me at this point. Might as well swallow the anger, sit down and watch as he invents a love triangle for Legolas and two dwarves and makes butterflies talk for no reason at all.

They're fleshing out the movies with a lot of material from the Simallrion (such as details of the council meeting about tyhe Necromancer nee Sauron)

Posted by: cockroach at May 23, 2011 2:53 PM

Cumberbatch?

I barely know 'er!

Posted by: StoatCat at May 23, 2011 2:55 PM

I'm looking forward to The Hobbit. If Jackson can do what he did for the LOTR series - greatly improving upon the source material and still maintaining the integrity of it - than it should be great.

Not everything Jackson altered or changed worked in the LOTR movies, but, overall, the movies are better than the books.

Hopefully, he can recapture that magic with The Hobbit, because his two post-LOTR films, King Kong and The Lovely Bones were pretty bad, especially King Kong, I've never been able to sit through the whole thing. Blech.

please don't use "Anglophile", it completely ignores the contributions of Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland to the culture.

Please don't use "Britophile", as it completely ignores the contribution of the Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, and... screw it... just call us all Terraphiles.

Heh. Good point in this case, but I mean talking about a mostly/completely British stuff, such as Doctor Who, (Which it must be said was co-created by a Canadian, as was Superman -those that Canadian's co-creator was another Canadian)

In other words, yes, I should shut the hell up.

I was kind of surprised that Richard Armitage got the role of Thorin Oakenshield.

I was kind of surprised that Richard Armitage got the role of Thorin Oakenshield.

Why so?

Posted by: I Need More Allowance at May 23, 2011 3:24 PM

Yeah never use the word Anglophile because I dont wanna be painted with that brush.

Cumberbatch could be an extremely tall dwarf. He could be "Stretch" son of "Tall".

Posted by: logan at May 23, 2011 3:27 PM

One thing I'm looking forward to is all the dwarfs having different personalities, rather than only the fat one and the king being memorable as separate entities.

Posted by: cockroach at May 23, 2011 3:27 PM

Oh, and, COURTNEY.

Posted by: logan at May 23, 2011 3:28 PM

I'm not sure, I'm not sure, I'm not sure...

Posted by: Cindy at May 23, 2011 4:18 PM

Ugh, might as well make him Smaug.

Posted by: I Need More Allowance at May 23, 2011 2:45 PM

That works for me. All dragons are posh, aren't they?

Certainly a better idea than casting him as Bard the Bowman.

Posted by: Ballytmena Bob at May 23, 2011 6:26 PM

I hope he's either Smaug or an elf. He's not old enough and grim enough to be Bard.

Posted by: BWeaves at May 23, 2011 8:14 PM

Oh, and, COURTNEY.

Posted by: logan at May 23, 2011 3:28 PM

Ha ha, that joke never gets old. Wait... actually, it got old really fast, like after the second use (and I'm being generous). I admire your commitment to it (also a gross exageration), but as several commenters have mentioned recently, beating a dead horse is not an admirable act. Unless you're deliberately antagonizing us now, in which case, well... that would be pretty dickish.

'Anglophile' is fine - don't listen to the barbarians.

Posted by: Caspar at May 24, 2011 8:53 AM

Sorry for the delay: I Need More Allowance but I just now checked to see if anyone replied.

I just don't know if he has the chops for it. I mean, I like him as an actor but I tend to view his work as kind of corny.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at May 24, 2011 3:04 PM

Thanks for the post. Th Hobbit is really full of great cast. But still I like Orlando Bloom more that Benedict. I can't wait to see this movies. It must be great. http://www.torrentoff.com os site for free downloads.
