Totally Didn't See That Coming

Ten years after The Blair Witch Project blew away every record for budget-to-profit ratio, nine years after the studio rushed out a sequel made by different people and widely panned, two days after Paranormal Activity hits wide release and attempts a run at the heavy weight title of low budget horror, the absolutely unthinkable has occurred.

The directors of The Blair Witch Project (Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez) have announced that they will be making a sequel. They insist an idea finally came to them after years of wandering in the wilderness, a sudden inspiration that just felt right after a decade of thought and perseverance. What an amazing coincidence! I bet the eventual film will involve:

1. Documentary-style found footage.
2. Creepy noises in the dark.
3. Hidden letters that when assembled say “PA Sux, BW Forevar”

I haven’t been this shocked since that dark and terrifying day at the sandbox when I found out that girls wore different underwear than boys.

BW3 was supposed to be a prequel to the series to explain what to make the Blair Witch haunting in the first place. I liked BW2, but I know a lot of people hate it. I found the premise to be great but the execution was lacking and the whole thing just ends up confusing. I'm not sure the world needs another Blair Witch Project but I'm interested to hear the premise this time.

The ending of Blair Witch 2 was genuinely scary and suprising, the rest of the film, not so much.

Look, they saw their chance to buy a new yacht and they took it. You'd do the same damned thing, ya bastard!

If the prequel thing is true, I will actually be interested. I'm a sucker for history and backstories. For example, I was suspended three days from school for popping a girl's bra strap and have learned and forgotten the words to "It's the End of the World as We Know It" twice. See? History is fucking awesome.

“PA Sux, BW Forevar”

Pennsylvania Sux, Bweaves forevar? That doesn't even make sense.

I believe it's saying Penny Arcade sucks. Bill Watterson Forever.

What surprised me most when I caught a bit of BW2? That Jeffrey Donovan (AKA Michael Westin) was in it! I was not ready for that.

And there were always rumors after BW became the hit it became that there were 2 movies in the works (the sequel and a prequel). After BW2 tanked though, thoughts of a third movie died. Not surprised that after movies like Cloverfield, Quarantine and Paranormal Activity succeeded, there's thoughts to bring their grandpappy back.

Have I been reading this site to much? I saw "PA Sux, BW Forevar” and though, "Okay, BW forever is Bweaves but who the hell is PA".

I think they're focusing more on a sequel this time and hoping to still do the prequel ideas as one or two movies later on; one with Rustin Parr and one further back with the witch. There's been a lot of press about it for the 10th anniversary all year; it kind of blends together.

I liked Book of Shadows: BW2, but I can see why it was not popular. Tough act to follow. What made BW great was by definition going to make any sequel attempt a tough nut to crack, even if the makers of the original stayed on. BW2 was the result of a hopeless situation involving the departure of the makers of the first one, the zeal of the folks to whom they sold the film, and a talented but reluctant director.

PA felt like someone figured out how to do a decent Blair Witch sequel. The story was very similar and the format was the same. Only the setting was significantly different. That's not to say that it isn't a good film. It's the San Diego Demon Project.

Great, now I'm gonna have to dust off my Calvin and Hobbes complete collection. It's a good thing but each volume weighs about 50 pounds and my back is already sore today. Wilson, you clearly didn't think through the consequences when you posted this piece.

PA = Paranormal Activity

BW = Blair Witch

No?
Well, at least Laredo is with me.

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows is one of my favorite modern horror films. Why? It's very meta. It's a film about people making a film about what happened to people who made a film about a local legend and how the local legend is then able to manipulate the film to induce unusual behavior among the people making the film about the film about the legend to expand its influence and confound rich white suburbia. It's a work of art, really.

Glad to see some BW2 love somewhere. Thought I was very, very alone on that one.

Hello?
