No, It's Not a Black Dynamite Sequel

Black Lightning Trailer / TK

No, it’s not a new blaxploitation movie. Nor is it about the questionably named DC Comics character. Black Lightning is the new Russian sci-fi/action film produced by Timur Bekmambetov (director of Nightwatch, Daywatch, and Wanted), directed by Alexandr Voitinsky. It’s about a boy whose father buys him his first car, only for him to discover that the car can fly and do all kinds of cool shit. Of course, there’s a bad guy who wants it, and he and his car go on to fight evil (evil in this case is in the form of a menacing-looking dude with a flying Mercedes that shoots missiles).

It’s got a Spider-Man-meets-Shia-and-Bumblebee kind of vibe to it, with the kind of over-the-top effects and action that is reminiscent of several recent Russian releases. I doubt it’s going to have the geek cachet that Daywatch did (a very good, if rather flawed and obtuse film), and it’s clearly more PG-13 than the likes of Wanted. But it’s got potential as a good, fun, effects-driven picture. Assuming you’re not one of those toolboxes who blanches at subtitles. Check out the trailer:

If I wanted to read, I wouldn't have dropped out of first grade.

If I could put that trailer into an equation:
Black Lightning = Transformers(-Robots) x Dirt Bike Kid + The Rocketeer / The Love Bug.

The US remake will be called "Let the Right One Merge".

That's just it - this won't even need subtitles. Or dubbing.

It fits all the action-picture slash coming-of-age points like some crazy colour-by-numbers. There's even the "with great power comes ---" moment. And really, will the dialogue even matter?

Is this going to be released in the theaters or is it straight to Netflix??

"...reminiscent of several recent Russian releases. "

You mean other than Timur Bekmambetov's?
If so, could you list a few?
Now i'm all curious. This looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
