Biz Break: "Saturday Night Live" May Be Losing Three Cast Members Over the Summer

The Jimmy Fallon to The Tonight Show deal is official, so says THR, which hears it from an "inside source," which means it's not really official, but hey! Close enough, right. The timing is still an issue. NBC brass wants Fallon in during the Winter Olympics in February 2014, but Lorne Michaels thinks Fallon needs a little more time. There's also a matter of a huge contract penalty if Leno is pulled before his contract expires in Septmeber 2014. Meanwhile, Seth Meyers is expected to replace Fallon unless something horrible goes wrong.

So, we can stop talking about this for a while, yes? Good.

Meanwhile, in what has to be the worst bargain of all time, Netflix will make House of Cards available on DVD for anywhere between $50 and $65, depending on the outlet. So, basically, you can buy House of Cards on DVD, or you can subscribe to Netflix for six months and watch both House of Cards and everything in the Netflix catalogue. Tough call, tough call.

Will Arnett has joined Megan Fox in the cast of the Michael Bay-produced, Jonathan Liebesman-directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in an unspecified role. Now that you know that, please feel free to scrub it from your mind.

Tim Burton's next movie is something of a departure for him. He'll be directing Big Eyes, a biopic about Margaret and Walter Keane, who became famous in the 1950s and 60s for paintings featuring saucer-eyed kids. Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams have been cast in the lead roles, which were once occupied by Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon.

"Saturday Night Live" player Nasim Pedrad (who is, weirdly, the longest-running female cast member on the show at the moment) has take the female lead in the Lorne Michaels produced comedy pilot written and starring John Mulaney (an "SNL" writer). The show, loosely based on Mulaney's life, also stars Martin Short and Elliott Gould. Should it go to series, both Pedrad and Mulaney would leave "SNL."

If "SNL" loses Pedrad, Meyers, and Mulaney, next year ... oh, it'll be fine, as long as Taran Killam and Kate McKinnon stick around.

Jason Dohring is officially signed on to the Veronica Mars movie, as if there were a question.

Speaking of obvious, HBO officially announced the fourth-season renewal of "Game of Thrones" yesterday, after Sunday's episode outranked every other scripted show on Fox this ENTIRE year in the 18-49 demo. Sunday's premiere also set a record for the most pirated show of all time.

Finally, Melissa McCarthy, one of the better "Saturday Night Live" hosts last year, is returning this weekend. Here are the TV promos.

On my system, I get two PBS channels. Usually one runs "Austin City Limits" at 11 p.m. and the other at midnight. I never see SNL. Why would I?

  • Shazza

Does this mean Lorne will FINALLY find a black female comedic actor? Or is he afraid of cutting back on Kenan's time?

  • scone

    I'm Reba!

I will greatly miss Nasim's Ariana Huffington, but other than that I wish her the best. I'm dreading the day Hader leaves, even with Taran and Bobby to cushion the blow.

  • I'm VERY surprised that Lorne thinks enough of Nasim to put her in her own show. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOOVE her but she was barely ever featured. Each week I'd patiently wait for more Nasim and it'd usually be a letdown. My favorite skit of hers was when Bryan Cranston hosted and she was his nerdy son and he was trying toughen her up.

  • sean

That was pretty great. But all Nasim really does is awkward teens. Which is odd, as she is smoking hot.

  • I feel like she never really found her voice on SNL which is a bummer.

  • Stony Tony

Nobody ever does because only a few key voices are listened to. I cannot fucking wait until Seth Meyers is gone and the show gets a shot of adrenaline.

  • Well in fairness they tend to write their own skits and tailor it to themselves. Maybe she just wasn't that great of a comedy writer.

  • AudioSuede

Those SNL promos are the best ones they've done in a while. Usually the promos are the most stiff, awkward part of the week. But those? Those tickle me.

John Mulaney is the one who makes Stefon funny! I know Hader will most likely continue to write it on his own but the magic will be gone. I read somewhere (was it here?) that Mulaney often changes the specifics that are on the cue cards in an attempt to make Hader laugh and break character. You can't take away the strange beauty of Stefon within a year of taking away the strange beauty of Community. It's not fair! Where will weirdos go to belly laugh?

  • John G.

you either read that here, or in literally any interview John Mulaney has ever done, or any blurb that has ever mentioned Stefon, or I think Hader and Mulaney also wander the Earth and personally whisper that fact into people's ears.

  • becks

I've never heard a mention of Mulaney, Hader or Stefon in any popular media outlet or blog other than Pajiba to the best of my recollection. I don't think they get quite the exhaustive play you're insinuating.

  • John G.

John Mulaney is one of my favorite comedians, so I'm probably more exposed to it than most, you're right.
