Biz Break: Karen Gillan Lands Villainous Post-"Doctor" Role.

Karen Gillan has been cast as the so-far-unnamed lead villain in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't know much about this particular area of comic fandom, so I'm bereft of guesses. Whatever role Gillan might play, she joins Lee Pace and Michael Rooker as the Big Bads. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Glenn Close, and John C. Reilly are the Good Ones. Bautista is all about getting buffer for his role, by the way.

The Expendables 3 is chugging along with casting, with Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage, and Milla Jovovich supposedly locked into roles. Perhaps Jovovich's role will help set up the long-rumored The Expendables: Bajingo-Having Leads Edition?

Paul Greengrass is directing Memphis, which follows Martin Luther King Jr. toward the end of his life. The King Estate is reportedly not pleased with Greengrass' take on Mr. King, but that hasn't stopped Forest Whitaker from expressing interest in the lead role. An Oscar role is an Oscar role, am I right?

Whoopi Goldberg has joined Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as Bernadette Thompson. This is a rewrite of the show's Channel 6 News Editor, Burne Thompson. Burne was a white dude and Goldberg is not. This is all fine with me, as who cares what Channel 6's News Editor looks like or which bathroom they use. Also, I don't give a sh*t.

What??? Burne was the thematic CORE of the Ninja Turtles! How could they mess with such a central figure, especially one whose white-maleness was inextricably entwined with his emotional resonance?

  • Tinkerville

Yay Karen! I wasn't a fan of Amy Pond, but I don't think that was her fault as much as the writers and Moffat. She's a delightful actress so color me excited. Plus there's LEE "EYEBROWS" PACE.

  • But they're making the Pie-Maker a bad guy. That ISN'T ALLOWED.

  • Tinkerville

True, but I'll take the Pie-Maker any way I can get him. Good, bad, clothed, unclothed...

  • Have you watched Showtime's Soldier's Girl? He was so good - it was severely dusty in my house.

  • dizzylucy

I am horrified, horrified I tell you, that they aren't sticking 100% to the integrity of the source material for TMNT. Have they no shame?

  • Batesian

Looks like Bautista is so yoked he's vibrating constantly.

  • Fabius_Maximus

And if he gets anyway more buff, he's going to explode.

  • Allen

Can't understand why The Rock isn't in the Expendables.

  • phase10

Probably because he's still able to get A-List roles.

  • Three_nineteen

I don't think Whitaker deserves the shot you just took at him. The family has to bless everything written about King? And Whitaker already has an Oscar.

  • Pinky McLadybits

It wasn't meant as a shot, actually. It was meant more along the lines of this is going to be a glorious, juicy role and we all know that Whitaker has the chops to make it Oscar-worthy. Clearly it wasn't conveyed as such in my writing this morning.

I wonder if she's playing Nebula? The villain who claimed to be Thanos' daughter.

  • foolsage

Nebula seems likely, both as a standalone villain and as a tie-in to Thanos. Karen sure would make a lovely Death though; obviously that doesn't work as Death isn't properly speaking a villain, but rather Thanos' motivation for villainy.

  • Wembley

Based on the pic, she's playing Bumblebee.
