I didn’t see Neil Jordan’s last film, Ondine, though I understand it’s much like a modern-day fairy tale. I did see The Brave One, though, which wasn’t terribly whimsical, and Breakfast on Pluto before that, which was plenty so. The point is, it seems like Jordan can have a light touch when he needs one, and it sounds like his next project will indeed.
According to Variety, he’ll be writing and directing an adaptation of Paul Murray’s novel, Skippy Dies, in which two Irish schoolmates — a math whiz and the gym teacher’s favorite target — bond when the latter dies and the former “performs a slew of wacky science experiments in an attempt to reach his friend beyond the grave.” The novel’s description on Amazon reads a bit loopier than that logline, though. I mean, “a cast of characters that ranges from hip-hop-loving fourteen-year-old Eoin “MC Sexecutioner” Flynn to basketball-playing midget Philip Kilfether”? Even if all you read were the names, things wouldn’t seem so somber.
At any rate, it’ll likely end up better than Charlie St. Cloud in the kids-beyond-the-grave department. That’s not asking for too much now, is it, Mr. Jordan?
