Sci-Fi Thursday Miscellaeny

Hey, it’s that time of the month again, when the moon aligns just right so that there are a stack of small science fiction stories on a certain day, but nothing particularly big enough to warrant its own post. And the good news, is that it’s not all terrible news.

First up, J. Michael Straczynski has acquired the rights to Harlan Ellison’s legendary short story “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman.” Ellison has resisted any attempt to adapt it into a film, saying:

Scripts are, in a hundred ways, more difficult and stylistically demanding than a straight story. It takes a conscious paradigm-shift in thinking to adapt something from narrative to visual media. With only a half dozen exceptions in my forty-plus years here, I’ve never allowed anyone else to stir my porridge. And as far as ‘Repent, Harlequin!’ is concerned, well, even I consider this gig to be a ball-buster. I wouldn’t trust it to anyone else. If anyone should fail at the task, it ought to be me, just to be fair.

Ellison has a special relationship with Straczynski though as they worked together on “Babylon 5.” It’s a fantastically different sort of dystopian story in which lateness is considered to be a theft of time, which is then of course deducted off of your life. It’s been in any number of short story collections over the years, and is well worth your while tracking it down if science fiction is your cup of tea.

Next up, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome has gotten its first casting announcements out. They’ve cast Luke Pasqualino from the UK version of “Skins” as Adama and Ben Cotton from “Hellcats” and “Riese” as his commanding officer. I know absolutely not the slightest thing about either of these actors, other than this picture.

Well, they don’t immediately offend me, but that’s all I’ve got.

Finally, the NY Post, that paragon of responsible journalism, is reporting that Christian Bale is the front runner to play Roland in the massive film and television adaptation of The Dark Tower. I’m mixed. On the one hand he’s a fantastic actor, but on the other he just seems a shade too young to pull off the Gunslinger. Bale’s 36, and while it’s never quite clear how old Roland really is, it’s made abundantly clear that he’s worn and weathered. It’s just got to be a face with lines on it.

But I wouldn’t spend too much contemplation on the news because first of all, it’s the NY Post, and second of all they go on to say that the same source informed them that Jennifer Carpenter is in the running for the role of Susannah. Despite the nuanced arguments of Mac and Dennis for blackface, I just don’t see anyone getting King’s blessing to cast a white woman as Susannah, a character whose race is absolutely inseparable from her story.

But then we’re talking Ron Howard here, so who knows?

AICN posted the Dark Tower news today but refuted the Bale news and said it was Javier Bardem. Also that Wizard & Glass would make up the TV series in between the 2 feature films. I doubt it will be Bale or Bardem, but Bardem is at least an interesting choice. I'm hoping that the Post is wrong (HA!) and what they mean is Jennifer Lawrence and that she is up for Susan Delgado.

But changing a black woman to a white one won't have any adverse consequences in the press either I'm sure.

If memory serves me correctly, and it probably doesn't, Roland ages significantly by the second book. So, you know maybe they can do it how King wrote it. Shoot the first movie and then let Bale age for 20 years and shoot the rest.

If Susannah is white I will hunt down Ron Howard and beat him with Steve Guttenberg's severed arm.

Posted by: Paultera at January 27, 2011 10:26 AM

Bale is method man through and through. If he gets cast as Roland he'll trek nekkid through the Australian outback slathered in eucalyptus oil until his skin is as aged, rough and leathery as necessary.
Hang on there skippy: Bale, nekkid, oil... buhbye now.

Posted by: cinekat at January 27, 2011 10:27 AM

Steve Guttenberg has an arm off?

Wh'bou' Michael Parks as Roland?

Posted by: Rykker at January 27, 2011 10:30 AM

In anticipation of the Dark Tower adaptation, I started to read the series. The first one is a bear (bored out of my mind), but The Drawing of the Three had me enthralled. I look forward to the rest, even though everyone hates the end.

With that said, if Susannah is changed to a white woman, I will burn the damn studio down and then piss on the smoldering embers.

Posted by: Kaleena at January 27, 2011 10:34 AM

I feel you, Kaleena. It had been ages since I read the Dark Tower series by the time the last three came out, so I started reading them again. Yeah, I didn't make it through the first one. So boring. I think I'll just put it away and start with The Drawing of the Three, which was phenomenal, PARTICULARLY Susannah's story. And yes, even though it's been ages and ages since I read it, there's no casting a white actress for that. I think that will seal its doom.

On the other hand, it's the Post....

Oh, and Straczynski + Ellison = pretty awse.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at January 27, 2011 10:53 AM

Viggo=Roland

Posted by: dammitjanet at January 27, 2011 11:00 AM

Has Pajiba covered anything about the rumored 8th book KING is working on for the Dark Tower? Wind in the Keyhole?

Posted by: InfluentialInfluenza at January 27, 2011 11:10 AM

I like The Gunslinger, but then, when I read it I knew it was the beginning of a seven part epic. If I'd read it when it was first published, or any time in the 10 or so years between it and The Drawing of the Three, I guess I could see how it's boring. But I was enthralled with the images and the personality of it, and interested to read such an early King work. I also learned of the word "palaver," and the beauty of unnecessary words made necessary for distinct character development.

But, yeah, the second book is pretty fantastic. I can see how they'd turn the first novella into an extended prologue of some sort, with the majority of the first movie being Drawing. Javier Bardem would be interesting, but, honestly, Bale is the best choice I've heard so far, including over Viggo and Daniel Craig. His youth actually gives him a leg up, in that he'll be able to play Roland from the past to the end with somewhat greater believability. My only trepidation with him is that then he'll be Batman, John Connor, and Roland Deschain. That's just not fair.

For Susannah? Taraji P. Henson or GTFO.

Posted by: RobP at January 27, 2011 11:13 AM

No one ever likes my idea for Hugh Laurie as Roland! He's lanky, somewhat gaunt, and his face is totally weather. Sexy weathered. . .

Posted by: stellamerteuil at January 27, 2011 11:16 AM

goddamn I am so not excited for this Dark Tower adaptation. This is a story meant to be read, I don't care how authentic or creative your adaptation, it is going to suck. That being said, I would have to watch it, despite the damage it is going to do to my memory of the books. I guess I am to blame for all this.

Posted by: really at January 27, 2011 11:18 AM

I have both the original first book and King's "new" version, and I thought there were enough slight changes between the two that I could definitely see a difference. I prefer the original, but it's also the one I read four thousand times when I was a gothy teen, so it could just be nostalgia.

Posted by: Phaeolus at January 27, 2011 11:33 AM

I'm with you stellamerteuil on Hugh Laurie - the perfect face!

With all this talk, I feel like I should re-read the books at some point, but damn! SO many pages. I actually didn't hate the end. Didn't love it. But I realized 5 or 6 books in that I was essentially reading one giant King book, and as I like to say "That Stephen King sure can write a great half a book." (Seriously - child-eating-sewer-dwelling clown? nope, it's actually an alien spider. NO.) I prepared myself to be incredibly pissed at the end of the Dark Tower Series. So maybe it was low expectations that saved me from completely hating it.

Posted by: really at January 27, 2011 11:18 AM

So don't see the movie. Unless you just want something to hate.

And people wonder why humanity needs some sort of government regulation. Sheesh.

Posted by: RobP at January 27, 2011 11:49 AM

I'm with dammitjanet. Viggo. My bet friend and I called for Viggo as Roland during a hypothetical discussion about casting The Dark Tower. I wouldn't mind ale, though. I remember Liam Neeson was suggested at one point as well. As for Susannah, I like Sanaa Lathan.

Posted by: Az at January 27, 2011 11:59 AM

I do love the idea of Viggo, but Hugh Laurie? That would actually be some really inspired casting. Am I the only one who finds him incredibly sexy?

I am a bit confused as to why so many people seem to be vying for an older actor. Mind you, I've only read the second book so far, but I get the impression that Roland is in the neighborhood of mid-thirties. He became a gunslinger in his teens and in his world, people in their forties are old-timers; life's rough in the world that's moved on.

Posted by: Kaleena at January 27, 2011 12:17 PM

I think that Lance Henrickson would make a credible Roland. Or Edward James Olmos. (sp?)

Both of them have the weathered features and rough voices that Roland would seem to embody.

Or, go all out, and get Clint Eastwood!

Even better, Zombie Lee Van Cleef!

There you go!

Posted by: Uncle JR at January 27, 2011 12:22 PM

He's a thousand years old or more.

Posted by: MillyQPublic at January 27, 2011 12:25 PM

What a bunch of idiots. Drawing of the Three is one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. Once I read some John Grisham book on a plane, and maybe that one was worse. But yeah, it sucks. "You ofay greymeat, due de dur." The first book is Naborgeskovian ("containing killer levels of excitement and creativity," in other words) when compared to the second.

Posted by: Gitley at January 27, 2011 12:29 PM

My God, Hugh Fucking Laurie, how perfect would THAT be? He really IS Roland, it never occured to me. But it'll never happen. RH is too much of a tool for such inspired casting...

Posted by: Man of Stool at January 27, 2011 12:43 PM

Someone mentioned Viggo Mortensen as Roland, and now I can't think of anyone who would be better for the part. He's got the freakish eyes, he's all long and skeletal, like Roland should be. He'd be absolutely perfect.

Posted by: Figgy at January 27, 2011 1:08 PM

InfluentialInfluenza: WHAT THE WHAT? No fucking way.

Hugh Laurie would be terrible. Yeah, I love the guy, but come the fuck on. He's a frail-looking British dude with an attitude. He's not Roland fucking Deschain.

Posted by: Figgy at January 27, 2011 1:11 PM

I don't think Bale would sign on for this. Sure, it might be a fun role, but I don't think he's the kind of actor who wants to play the same character for that length of time. Even between Batman movies he's been able to do other things. He wouldn't have that chance with three movies and an ongoing TV series.

Kelsey Grammar. That's my choice.

Posted by: superasente at January 27, 2011 1:18 PM

BALE?!!!!!!!! are they nuts?!

Viggo all the way. and if they cast Susannah as a white woman I am going to go kill something. a lot of somethings.

Straczynski involved with something? well that's news. I forgot all about him.

Posted by: Lordninja at January 27, 2011 1:59 PM

oh gods please someone get viggo on the hook.

also, enough with bale already, godammit why is it bale all over the damn place?

also, wizard and glass is the best book in the series, hands down.

also, i always push this on people because it's so good: listen to the audiobook narration of the dark tower books by frank mueller, the man was a genius

Posted by: Sinnh at January 27, 2011 2:30 PM

I actually think Bardem's a great choice. Yeah, he's a bit on the aged side for the first book, but the later books, I think he could make it look perfect (and we know he has the chops). If she's old enough by the time they start filming, I think Saoirse Ronan would make an excellent Susan Delgado. And since we're talking dream casting, maybe Freema Agyeman for Susannah? As for Eddie, right now I'm thinking Norman Reedus (Darryl on The Walking Dead), but that might just be 'cause I'm still so high on his character on the show.

Posted by: JustBill at January 27, 2011 2:50 PM

Oh! And possibly Andrew Garfield for the younger Roland in Wizard and Glass (he might be too old for the part by the time they get to that book)? This is fun. I'll have to keep thinking of people for smaller characters like The Man in Black, Cuthbert, Alain, etc.

Posted by: JustBill at January 27, 2011 2:53 PM

If only I didn't have this sad little penis. Little penis, why aren't you bigger? Is it because no one loves me?

I'm so lonely.

Posted by: caucasian fury at January 27, 2011 3:04 PM

While Luke Perry is not a great actor by any means, I always kind of pictured that is what Roland would look like.

Posted by: Jadine at January 27, 2011 3:04 PM

Ideal Roland casting if he were still alive and an actor instead of a musician: Johnny Cash.

Posted by: Jadine at January 27, 2011 3:05 PM

I saw Harlan Ellison's name and was legitimately frightened they were adapting "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" but I'm okay now.

AvClub is reporting that Ron Howard offered the lead to Javier Bardem. (http://www.avclub.com/articles/javier-bardem-offered-the-lead-in-the-dark-tower,50723/). I think it could work, but I do believe an older, veteran actor is needed to pull it off.

@JustBill. Norman Reedus is the man.

Posted by: Parker Jammstein at January 27, 2011 4:07 PM

Caucasian fury, I hope someone takes this literally and skull fucks you with a rusty fencepost.

I know, I'm not supposed to feed them but fuck that.

Posted by: Paultera at January 27, 2011 4:08 PM

I wouldn't mind ale, though.

Posted by: Az at January 27, 2011 11:59 AM

I really prefer scotch, but an ale would hit the spot right now.
