Honestly, I dig both of the movie posters. I’ve already decided to see Casa De Mi Padre based on the previous poster and trailer, and Paperboy looks like the gritty, sexed-up video game adaptation I never knew I always wanted. But, without question, I’ll be watching the Oscars. I won’t be invested in who wins or loses, I doubt I’ll laugh at the tritely written jokes, and I couldn’t care less about who is wearing who. I won’t want to watch it, but I’ll be compelled. Which is probably why the Academy doesn’t bother with making their annual nationally televised circle-jerk at all interesting. They know that those of us who are going to watch are going watch no matter what they do.

Rob Payne also writes the indie comic The Unstoppable Force, tweets on the Twitter @RobOfWar, and his ware can be purchased here (if you’re into that sort of thing). He’ll also be watching so he’ll understand all of @DougBenson’s jokes during his live-tweet of the ceremony.

Ferrell? Ew. Efron? Ew. Academy Awards FTW! Bonus points for the Gladiator shot. :)

If it were my choice, it would be Ferrell. The lady will probably drag me to see Zac Efron, though.

I'm confused... Is The Paperboy about that kid finally getting his two dollars? Looks like Cusack was none too pleased to part with it. What would the interest be on two dollars after all these years?

Posted by: Pfft at December 30, 2011 8:19 AM

For some reason neither poster would look too out of place if they had "The Grindhouse Presents" at the top of them as they both give of a 1970's Exploitation vibe even if neither actually are.

As for the Oscars, it could have only helped them if they had gone that route.

The last time I watched the Oscars (or showed the slightest bit of interest in the presentation) was when the song Blame Canada was up for Best Song. And it lost to Phil Collins.

I might see both of those movies, based on the posters. They look good.

Well, the poster didn't lure me in, but now I'm really hoping it's a secret sequel to Better Off Dead.

Does the cowboy in that poster look frighteningly like Rick Perry, or am I OD-ing on politics lately? (My popcorn expenses are through the roof, and there's another year to go.)

Secret sequels are the best sequels.

Has John Cusack always worn eyeliner and mascara or he channeling his inner Captain Jack?

Doug loves movies.

Dear lord, was that Academy Awards poster made using MS Paint?

Posted by: Pants at December 30, 2011 10:43 AM

I don't watch the Academy Awards. I wait to come here and have it summed up and judged for me. It's much more fulfilling and I don't lose 4 hours of an evening listening to terrible banter and people thanking their agents.

Posted by: PerpetualIntern at December 30, 2011 11:04 AM

Seeing Pete Dexter's name on The Paperboy makes me interested, but I also love Will Ferrell. I could go either way. Don't care about the Oscars, tho, at all.

Posted by: ChickaBoom! at December 30, 2011 11:09 AM

@Pfft:

I noticed the same exact thing. Were Will Ferrell and Rick Perry separated at birth?

If so, that would explain a lot since Rick Perry actually seems like he's Will Ferrell in a Will Ferrell movie only in real life.

God my brain hurts.

That is a great poster for Casa Mi Padre. I would see it based on how it looks like Ron Burgundy joined a rodeo.

Posted by: Julie at December 30, 2011 11:44 AM

Efron's arm in The Paperboy sells the movie for me. Also, I had to read the poster multiple times to make sure it wasn't Johnny Depp's crazy eyes.

Posted by: tawnia at December 30, 2011 12:37 PM

Gael Garcia Bernal? John Cusack?

That's two big Fuck Yeahs from me.

Posted by: ChristianH at December 30, 2011 12:47 PM

I would rather have my balls basted in garlic butter and over medium on a skillet than subject myself to all three options.

Posted by: bignick at December 30, 2011 12:48 PM

I'm going to just assume pfft and melbiv are right, not bother to look up what The Paperboy is actually about, and then go see it.

Excitement, she wrote.

It's true.

The Academy Awards poster pisses me off and I'll tell you why...what made last year's award show REALLY terrible wasn't the hosts (because honestly, who cares?). What killed it for me was all the nostalgic bullshit montages about past great films. One for each genre and time period and WHATEVER. I love movies much as everyone else, but what I want to see at the Academy Awards is a celebration of THAT year's movies. It's THEIR time to shine and no matter how crappy a year of film it's been, this award show has no right to take that away.

Posted by: valerie at December 30, 2011 4:53 PM

These posters confuse me. Confuse me greatly.

Will Ferrell looks like Clint Eastwood. I also get a squick vibe about it being "The House of My Father," and a girl's straddling Ferrell Eastwood. I don't want to think about my dad when looking at barely contained hoo-hoo. Also, "funniest movie you'll ever read"? The last funny thing including Will Ferrell that I saw was the spamming of Elf gifs for Christmas.

The Paperboy looks like a very bad Tumblr compilation of a movie poster. What is going on there? Zac Efron trying to channel James Dean with an abnormally large forearm, demonic Nicole Kidman, a copy-and-paste of Matthew McConaughey from The Lincoln Lawyer, and apparently, a screenshot of John Cusack in a forest.

Academy Awards poster = what do those movies have to do with this year?

Posted by: duckandcover at December 30, 2011 11:09 PM

@BIERCEAMBROSE!!!!

He looks just like Rick Perry! That was the absolute first thought to enter my head when I saw the header pic. Glad someone else saw it.

Posted by: Patrick the Bunny at December 31, 2011 1:33 AM

That Academy poster is horrible.

The other two much less so. I love the fold marks on the Mi Padre poster. Nice touch.

I'm beginning to think the movie will look like the unofficial Rick Perry biography directed by Kim Jong Il.
