With Men In Black 3 finally released this past weekend, Barry Sonnenfeld was free to discuss the future of his career post-Will Smith rejuvenation and he's had some interesting things to say about one of them. Dinosaurs vs. Aliens may sound like the kind of movie that only an idiot would need a decent plot synopsis before knowing if he or she might give it a chance, and while I don't disagree, I'm definitely an idiot.

Thankfully, Sonnenfeld was willing and able to oblige:

"We've already had lots of ideas. The aliens speak in a way [that] you can understand them. And the dinosaurs -- they actually have a certain amount of culture, through grunts and doing stuff with their bodies and sticks. We believe that the Dinosaurs had culture. They didn't speak, but they did have other ways of communicating. It won't be a problem, and it will be pretty fantastic."

The fact that legendary comic book writer Grant Morrison is tackling both the screenplay and the graphic novel is nearly enough to buy the premise sight unseen. Of course, like Cowboys and Aliens before it, Dinosaurs vs. Aliensis only a comic first as a tool to help sell the eventual cinematic adaptation. Morrison is unlikely to turn in a sell-out piece of entertainment, so I've gone ahead and pre-ordered the book from Amazon . He still gets the benefit of the doubt, for now. But, also, the cover is going to look like this...

How can you blame me?

Honestly, though, I don't know why they couldn't just make gritty reboots of either "Dinosaucers" or "Dino Riders." I know they weren't on the level of G.I. Joe or Transformers, but Sonnenfeld and Morrison really seem to be stretching for a way to make the inherent oppositional nature of the story both "realistic" and not entirely one-sided. Clearly, the answer is to make the dinosaurs smart via some sort of "brain box" or the dinosaurs are the aliens. Anything else is probably just trying too hard.

Rob Payne also writes the comic The Unstoppable Force, tweets on the Twitter @RobOfWar, and his wares can be purchased here and here (if you're into that sort of thing). He doesn't know who he's kidding, he'll probably be first in line for Dinosaurs vs. Aliens if/when it ever comes to a theater near him.
