Aubrey Plaza is in a weird almost-post-Parks and Rec phase of her career where (with a few notable exceptions in the last few years) she’s bouncing between interesting but poorly executed smaller films, with some College Humor videos and Grumpy Cat thrown in. Now she’s joined the cast of a movie called Dirty Grandpa, starring Zac Efron and Robert De Niro, the description of which makes me think we need to schedule a career intervention.

John Phillips penned the script, which follows a lewd Army veteran (De Niro) who tricks his uptight grandson (Efron) into taking him down to Florida to mingle with party-crazed college kids on Spring Break. Plaza is set to play Lenore, a spellbinding wild child and the romantic lead opposite De Niro.

Oh, vomit. To be clear, my reaction is not so much about the age difference. This is not me saying

I mean, I love Harold and Maude as much as the next f*cked up, jaded romantic. Sure, their 41-year age difference (which will likely be increased by 9 or 10 years since it sounds like Aubrey Plaza will be playing a college student) is enough to bring some major side eye, unless it’s done extremely well. (Again, see above reference.)

This, though? This does not sound like it could possibly be done well. This sounds like classic gross manic pixie tripe about a gross dude finally finding the right level of “spellbinding” quirk to tame his pervy crotch-heart. And sure, maybe that’s just a flimsy, crappy synopsis that doesn’t do justice to something more complex. But the team behind this movie is not encouraging either. Not that a noob creative team can’t surprise us, but the writer of this has exactly zero other IMDB credits and the director has spent most of his career producing various Sacha Baron Cohen projects. So what are the chances that this will end up being something worth watching?

Aubrey’s friend, Anna Kendrick, what do you think?

There you have it.
