So sayeth Andy Richter, as NBC has announced that he’ll take over duties as the announcer for “The Tonight Show” when Conan picks up the mantle from the Chin in June. Richter won’t be an on-the-couch sidekick, like he was when Conan started on the air way back in 1993 (how fucking old are we getting?!), sticking instead to mike duties. However, in addition to announcing, he will be involved in various skits and comedic ha-has.
Richter and Conan have a great chemistry together, so this is good news, except that it means that Richter has clearly given up on his attempts to find his own place in the TV landscape (for the moment, at least). Which is a shame, really. Because while “Quintuplets” was stinker, “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” was fantastic and “Andy Barker P.I.” was well better than average. Hell, even when he shows up for guest rolls, like a recent one-off on “Chuck,” Richter can bring the entertaining. He’s just never figured out how to parlay his talents into mass appeal.
I blame his involvement in Cabin Boy.
