I give up!

If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the booth / Seth Freilich

So sayeth Andy Richter, as NBC has announced that he’ll take over duties as the announcer for “The Tonight Show” when Conan picks up the mantle from the Chin in June. Richter won’t be an on-the-couch sidekick, like he was when Conan started on the air way back in 1993 (how fucking old are we getting?!), sticking instead to mike duties. However, in addition to announcing, he will be involved in various skits and comedic ha-has.

Richter and Conan have a great chemistry together, so this is good news, except that it means that Richter has clearly given up on his attempts to find his own place in the TV landscape (for the moment, at least). Which is a shame, really. Because while “Quintuplets” was stinker, “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” was fantastic and “Andy Barker P.I.” was well better than average. Hell, even when he shows up for guest rolls, like a recent one-off on “Chuck,” Richter can bring the entertaining. He’s just never figured out how to parlay his talents into mass appeal.

I blame his involvement in Cabin Boy.

Duuude. Not something you admit in polite company.

Damn. This is just like the time I drunkenly told someone I thought Kid Rock was "hot in a skanky way."

Crapola! When I saw that pic, I didn't recognize it right away as Richter, and thought it was some hill-jack Easter celebration, with toothless Uncle Bubba portraying Jeebus. The furry thing in the background looks like a cross cut out of faux-fur and Richter has definitely got the just-out-of-the-shithouse-at-the-trailer-park look on his face.

God, where is my mind today???

I have to say that I love the fact that these two are being reunited. Andy and Conan were always amazing together on "Late Night," and I think it's kind of fitting that when Conan "starts over" he'll be doing it with Andy. I only hope that his exposure to an earlier-in-the-night audience will get Andy more fans - he's ridiculously funny. Saw him on a college tour he did about 10 years back and laughed 'til I nearly cried. His autograph is still one of my prized possessions.

Evidently the same place as mine, dammitjanet, because I saw Inbred Jesus too.

It is nowhere near as bad as admitting you think Kid Rock is "hot in a skanky way." Admitting you like Cabin Boy is like saying "Hey I used to really love that old sitcom with the android little girl... her name was Vicki or something..." Your Kid Rock admission? Comparable to saying "I like to pee on unconscious hobos and light them on fire if they wake up, and I think not disclosing that you have herpes until AFTER you sleep with someone is great because it means they have to stay with you, and I think your grandma is sexy, and by the way, the remake of Prom Night is, like, my favorite movie ever."

Big difference.

*ahem*

"guest rolls"

Thanks, Tracer So, either we are both crazy, or there is some subtle sub-text we are both picking up on...

Richter is the Messiah? Conan is Mary Magdalene??

Anyone who's a Richter fan needs to see the "Reno 911 Miami" movie, (that is another unappreciated comedy gem). Aaaaaaand his cameo in Balls of Fury is also noteworthy.

OOOOPS! sorry sorry just confused Andy with Patton Oswalt.

Drugs are bad...paddlins' etc..

Great on 30 Rock, Great on Arrested Development.
I just with they could've kept Joel Goddard. He really was hilarious in the occasional skit I'd see him on. Always so so messed up. Not unlike the way every Conan skit ends.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at February 25, 2009 11:49 AM

And I just confused him with Kyle Gass. What a world.

Does it make things better or worse that I dressed up as KR for Halloween last year and won the costume contest?. I'm a girl, by the way. You could look at it as either a loving homage or blatant mockery. Let's just say it was blatant mockery so people won't think I go around peeing on hobos or something.

My costume rocked, by the way. I picked up a sweet ass eagle medallion at Spencer's for the final touch. It was like they knew I was coming in search of the perfect white trash emblem and they happily obliged. Their wide selection of chain wallets came in handy, too.

For some reason, a Peaches & Herb song is invading my brainspace.

I liked Quintuplets, but that just goes to show the strength of my Andy Richter love. The Mr. and I pull for him every time he has a new show on the air just to be a part of the solution, not the problem. This might make me more willing to watch The Tonight Show though, so NBC did something right.

Posted by: katy at February 25, 2009 2:14 PM

Seth, my friend, I'm so glad you're still watching Chuck. Don't you ever stop. But Richter was fun. Every time I see him on screen I think, "Oh hey, Andy Richter! Thank God somebody kicked over that rock you've been living under. Now keep bringing me the funny and showing up for 'In the year 2000...' sketches."

But he never fucking does. Maybe it's good that Conan put his leash back on. Richter is great has O'brian's bitch.

"When I return, I shall be a cabin man."

Cabin Boy came out when I was a kid, and for whatever reason, I still remember that line. It made me giggle.
