And Now, For Your Viewing Pleasure

Fright-Night-1985-w-Roddy-McDowall-and-William-Ragsdale.jpg

I feel all funny in my funny parts.

See that guy in the header picture, the one holding the cross? That’s original Fright Nighter Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent. Great actor, not necessarily someone who makes one’s funny parts feel anything.

Now take a looksie at this version of Peter Vincent:

And this one:

Fright_Night_2.jpg

Funny parts, right? Jay, you feeling it?

I wasn’t sure about whether or not this needed to be remade but I’ll have to admit that as time goes by and the cast set, I’ve been coming around. These pictures may have sealed the deal. Fright Night, the reboot, stars Tennant as a Las Vegas magician who is supposed to be a vampire expert. Anton Yelchin is Charley, the kid who thinks his neighbor Jerry (Colin Farrell) is a vampire; Toni Collette plays Charley’s mother, who (understandably) becomes entranced by Farrell’s Jerry Dandrige.

My one hope is that they let our fair ex-Doctor camp it up to the moon - make the scary parts super scary and fill in with riotous laughter. For now, the Farrell-Tennant is enough to keep me happy…in my bunk.

Praise you for posting this Cindy and praise all you Tennant loving Pajibans. Us Tennant fangirls saw the pictures yesterday and have been gushing about it ever since. The only question that remains is will Tennant use an American accent for his interpretation of Vincent or give us his natural Scottish accent or The Doctor's English one? I can't wait to see this. This is what remakes are for.

And yet he still doesn't look as ridiculous as when he Tinkerbell Jesus'ed back to life at the end of Last of the Time Lords.

I'm so there. I've been jonesing for DT in a big bad way.

Posted by: Courtney at September 2, 2010 5:06 PM

What exactly is going on in the crotch area of his pants? Cause, um, I want to know.

Are those chains? A lock and key? Are they seams being ripped asunder?

The boggle eyes kind of work here, don't they?

Oh, and this warms my cockles:

Yeah, that's Ten-inch in the same photo as Betty White. Obviously fighting over who's more adorable.

Posted by: Courtney at September 2, 2010 5:30 PM

Yes, to more Tennant in my life. And the the supporting cast looks solid as well. It's strange though, I'm getting more of a Jared Leto vibe from that shot. It's probably all the eyeliner.

The only question that remains is will Tennant use an American accent for his interpretation of Vincent or give us his natural Scottish accent or The Doctor's English one?

Please don't let it be an American accent! There was a clip of him in the pilot for his American lawyering show and that shit was just so wrong.

OH JESUS

I have a friend working in the wardrobe dept on Fright Night. Apparently when David Tennant comes in for costume fittings he will stick around and have lunch with the costume girls. By all accounts he is friendly, kind to people he doesn't have to be kind to (ie. lowly costume assistants and PA's), funny and charming as hell. It's nice to know my favorite guy is such a mench!

Posted by: shewholurks at September 2, 2010 5:48 PM

No, I've never heard a bad word about him. Tongues wagged about his younger girlfriend, but I've yet to see asshole documentation. Kinda like how Johnny Depp only makes the news when he's being absurdly gracious to fans. A mensch is to be celebrated.

Posted by: Jay at September 2, 2010 5:53 PM

@BWeaves What exactly is going on in the crotch area of his pants?
I've been told by someone that is an extra in the film that they lace up the front

@jM Please don't let it be an American accent!
I agree, as much as I love this man (and I LOVE this man!) that accent is no good...

Anyone who hasn't seen Tennant's performance of Hamlet - DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: GojyoChan at September 2, 2010 6:08 PM

Who the hell is David Tennant?

Posted by: Paul at September 2, 2010 6:31 PM

I only know who David Tennant is because I watched him in some BBC version of "Hamlet" and he was Hamlet and Patrick Stewart was Claudius.

Was David Tennant "Dr. Who" at some point?

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at September 2, 2010 6:47 PM

@forbiddendonut Yep! See below.

@Paul Tennant's a Scottish actor who got mega famous in the UK for playing the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who from 2005-2010.

NO!

HE WAS THE DOCTOR!!

ON "DOCTOR WHO"!!

GAAAAAAAAAHH!!!

Posted by: Jay at September 2, 2010 7:39 PM

Drink Jay, drink.

Posted by: Cindy at September 2, 2010 9:41 PM

You're always there for us, Jay.

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at September 2, 2010 9:41 PM

He was Dr. Who

*just waiting for Jay's head to finish exploding*

Posted by: figgy at September 2, 2010 10:20 PM

Don't forget about Barty Crouch, Jr. in "Goblet of Fire"..

Posted by: webelos8 at September 2, 2010 10:22 PM

This guy is all kinds of insane awesome, met him at the start of last year and hearing that Scottish accent in person will actually make you melt from the fun parts.

Don't know why his Yank accent isn't up to scratch, he normally nails all the other ones, and he does great voice work on the How to Train your Dragon series.

But that's not what you're here for, is it? You're here for the swooning. BWeaves, I believe those are lace-up leather pants. Let the swooning commence.

But also, I thought the mum got entranced by Jerry, not Peter?

Posted by: Laurie at September 2, 2010 10:44 PM

You're completely right Laurie. My bad.

Posted by: Cindy at September 2, 2010 10:53 PM

Completely understandable. I lost my wits looking at that too.

Posted by: Laurie at September 2, 2010 10:56 PM

Buh... wha?

He looks like Jack Sparrows's leather-clad love child. He looks like a Las Vegas emo. He looks...
Hot.

I hate it when this happens.

Posted by: ScienceGeek at September 2, 2010 10:59 PM

No.

They're trying to make him look like Jesus.

Ugh, he does NOT look hot. And this is coming from a Tennant fangirl.

Oh FFS! What is wrong with you people?

And no, I'm not a crazy christian.

Posted by: Tina at September 3, 2010 1:20 AM

Tina I've decided it's the eyes. I'm laughing at how ridiculous he looks, then I get to the eyes and suddenly, the most I can manage is 'Guh'.
I'm blaming it on too much time spent watching him as Ten. Tennant's using his patented Doctor thousand-year stare on that poster, and now I'm wondering if the Doctor ever got a little perverse and started wearing leather pants that tied at the crotch.

Guh.

(If it makes you feel any better, I am very ashamed of myself for this reaction).

Posted by: ScienceGeek at September 3, 2010 4:18 AM

Tina I've decided it's the eyes. I'm laughing at how ridiculous he looks, then I get to the eyes and suddenly, the most I can manage is 'Guh'.

The above is fact. He looks like that douche with the furry hat from that VH1 show where they teach nerds how to date rape, and yet I want to tap it.

Posted by: Courtney at September 3, 2010 7:34 AM

Tennant was also good in "He Knew He Was Right" was the rather Ichabod Crane like preacher who reverse cock-teased two sisters until he finally had to man up and marry one of them, and then he dumps one mid-engagement and marries the other one (who played Agatha Christie in one of his Dr. Who episodes).

I'm actually getting a bit of a Rasputin vibe off his face, but I'm so mesmerized by the crotch-lacing, groin-lacing, codpiecerie thing that I don't care.

Posted by: BWeaves at September 3, 2010 8:36 AM

OHMYGAWDOHMYGAWDOHMYGAWD!!!!!!!!!!!

I. WANT. THIS. NOW!

I am having Tennant withdrawals. And, yes, hopefully he will use his loverly Scottish accent, or at least the BEAUTIFUL Doctor English!!

Posted by: dammitjanet at September 3, 2010 9:22 AM

Ok, I know I'm dating myself with this post, but the original guy, Roddy McDowell? I had a super huge crush on him throughout most of my junior high days. (This was long before I knew what gay really meant.) And while this picture doesn't do it for me, there are a great many pictures out there that do.

I'm sure David Tennant will do a fine job. But there are very few actors out there that render me a blubbering fan-girl like Roddy McDowell used to way back in the day.

Posted by: Ignatz at September 3, 2010 10:53 AM

Ignatz: I, too, had a big crush on Roddy McDowell back in the day.

Posted by: BWeaves at September 3, 2010 11:25 AM

I'm not a Tennant fan, and I'd hit it... multiple times... with Bauhaus playing in the background... and afterward, we'd smoke cloves and drink coffee (back, of course, like our souls), and he'd recite poems that he's composed, and then we could paint each other's toe nails black, and may tease our hair a little so we'd look like Siouxsie and Robert Smith, and he'd share his black eyeliner with me, because the tip on mine is broken and I don't have a sharpener, and we'd go dancing at Bar Sinister, and all the other girls would be jealous of my sexy dark angel.

Excuse me, I'm going to see if I can find a nice wedding dress in black lace that I can wear when I marry him...

Posted by: gothdoctor at September 3, 2010 11:47 AM

Dude now looks like a frog with facial hair.

Posted by: figgy at September 3, 2010 12:39 PM

All of the DT fans that are skeptical, just wait until his amazingly animated face lights up this character. The giant banner of him is not doing justice to the magnificence that occurs when he MOVES! I'm just saying - don't lose hope even if the look skeezes you out. I prefer my DT looking like his natural, freckeled, pointy haired, self as much as the next fangirl but I'm giving this a chance to be awesome.

I love that they've reimagined the character as a magician/illusionist. Much more relevant today, there aren't "late night horror movie hosts" anymore.

Posted by: GojyoChan at September 3, 2010 1:14 PM

I'm a fan of David Tennant, don't get me wrong...but...wha-? I can not stop laughing...

Posted by: Candee at September 3, 2010 2:06 PM

Just IN CASE you haven't seen this yet...

And has anybody seen the mini-series Casanova, with Tennant and Peter Sellers? Oh, and Matt Lucas, just for good measure. You can't get it on Netflix but it's available online. Definitely check it out. The only BBC "classic" miniseries you'll see with a direct reference to Ali G. And lots of dirty talk by Tennant.

Posted by: AM at September 3, 2010 2:11 PM

@AM

Agreed, Cassanova is amazing. Oh, but it's Peter O'Toole not Peter Sellers. DT fans should definitely watch although the blue eyes sort of throw me every time I see pics from it.

Also, if you're in the mood for some darker fare from DT, check out Secret Smile. It's a mini-series he did in 2005 where he plays a deviously sexy sociopath.

Ok I swear I'm done...
