An Avenger Travels To Westeros: "Game Of Thrones" Season Three Cast Revealed

By TK | Trade News | July 16, 2012 | Comments ()

The new cast members for Game Of Thrones were announced over the weekend, and there are some damn exciting ones, both in terms of what characters are appearing, and what actors are portraying them. Unsurprisingly, I wet my pants a little.

Without too much to-do, and without spoiling (once again, the no spoilers rule is in FULL effect, folks. Spoiler comments get deleted, no exceptions, no complaining. Shut the fuck up and just don't spoil anything and we'll all get along just fine).

Here's the list for you to ooh and aah at:

Kerry Ingram: Shireen Baratheon, Stannis' daughter

Tara Fitzgerald (Sirens, Brassed Off, "Waking The Dead"): Selyse Baratheon, Stannis' wife

Clive Russell (Captain Tanner in the new Sherlock Holmes films): Brynden "The Blackfish" Tully, Lady Catelyn's uncle

Tobias Menzies (Casiino Royale): Edmure Tully, Catelyn's brother

Philip McGinley ("Coronation Street"): Anguy

Richard Dormer: Beric Dondarrion

Paul Kaye ("Mongrels"): Thoros of Myr

Anton Lesser ("Primeval"): Qyburn, a maester and supremely creepy dude

Nathalie Emmanuel (The British soap "Hollyoaks"): Missandei, one of Daenarys' handmaidens

Mackenzie Crook (Ragetti in the Pirates of the Caribbean films): Orell, one of Mance Rayder's wildlings

Kristofer Hivju: Tormund Giantsbane, another of Rayder's army (is this guy fucking perfect or what?)

Diana Rigg: Olenna Redwyne aka "The Queen of Thorns," mother to Mace Tyrell and grandmother to Margaery and Loras Tyrell

OK, fine:

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Last seen getting the shit kicked out of him by love): Jojen Reed, friend of Bran Stark

Ellie Kendrick (BBC's Anne Frank): Meera Reed, Jojen's sister

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • JQ

A.K.A. whose tits are we going to see in season 3

  • John G.

Wow, Edmure Tully looks exactly like Edmure Tully. This is how I pictured him exactly, and I don't even know this actor.

  • space_oddity

He played Brutus in HBO's Rome and was awesome in that. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

  • It's exciting and interesting to see that Kerry Ingram and Paul Kaye are both on the list considering they have both been starring in the West End version of Matilda together. They were both fantastic in it when I saw in it Stratford - Kerry Ingram in particular was phenomenal considering it was her first real role - although I'm not sure how much singing she'll be doing of GoT, she's certainly a talented actress and was luminescent on stage.

  • Captain_Tuttle

Ooh, I just remembered who Qyburn is. I can totally see that actor (with whom I am unfamiliar) being so very cold and creepy. And all that other stuff Qyburn is. I pictured the Reeds a bit younger, but since they aged everyone else up, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Meera looks familiar - I'll have to look her up.

    * edit * Ah-ha! Ivy from "Upstairs Downstairs."

  • celery

Damn, that Thoros of Myr. Goodness gracious.

Also, are they maybe aging Missandei up a bit? I thought she was supposed to be a little girl, but Emmanuel looks quite a bit older. Maybe they're going to use her instead of that one handmaid with those scenes.

  • PDamian

Kristofer Hivju was in that terrible remake of The Thing with Mary Elizabeth Winstead. As I recall, he and some of the other Norwegians were just about the only decent things (ha) about the movie.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster played Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy a couple of years back. He's usually a very good actor, but that movie did him no favors, and he didn't look anything like Paul, unfortunately, which was distracting. Hope GOT is kinder to him.

  • Forbiddendonut

Thrilled to see some of these characters being added, especially the Reeds and Blackfish. I love the Brotherhood Without Banners and look forward to seeing them in action.

Glad to see Missandei. If I recall correctly, by the end of last season Dany was pretty much out of handmaidens. I know it's "Game of Thrones" and all, but who knew handmaidening would be, like, the most dangerous job to have across the narrow sea?

It terms of survivability it's right up there with being one of the Thirteen of Qarth.

  • jM

I always pictured Thoros as bald, plump, and... not white. But I trust the shows casting.

I think they aged up Missandei so she could "handle" some of Irri's duties with Dany now that she's gone.

Now the wait to hear who they get for Mance Rayder and Vargo Hoat.

  • chad

Thoros was plump/drunk while he was still playing at being a knight. Once he teamed up with Beric, he thinned out and got serious.

  • space_oddity

Note too that there are several big roles slated for season 3, the casting of which are yet to be announced (Mance Rayder being one). There was a lot of bitching and moaning over at about how some of these don't EXACTLY MATCH how they're described in the books. But people need to relax. These all look great. Especially can't wait to see Diana Rigg as the Queen of Thorns.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Has there been mention of Katelyn having a brother before? I feel like he's a little late to the party.

and yay, Diana Rigg! I'm excited to see her in action again.

  • Fabius_Maximus

I think he was mentioned. IIRC, he appears in book 3 for the first time, so that's okay.

  • mrcreosote

For some reason I always pictured Qyburn as a younger guy, but as long as he's suitably creepy, no problem! Man though Tormund Giantsbane is just perfect. I hope he wears that suit because GoT could use a few dapper cast members. Look there's got to be at least one tailor among the wildings.

  • Ljane

That is totally how I pictured Jojen Reed while reading the books.

  • chicky07

The Reeds! <3 I wasn't sure if they were going to be included in the tv series, so this makes me happy. Also, that man IS Thormund Giantsbane, he needs to just go ahead and change his name because he looks perfect for the part.

  • kushiro -

I can't wait for the scene where Orell complains that one of the wildings has put his sword in a jelly.

  • John W

    OhMyGod! OhMyGod! OhMyGod!

  • Fabius_Maximus

This is mostly excellent casting. The only ones I have doubts about are Thoros - the guy does not seem to look the part -, Selyse - she seems to young, and the character already was in the series - , and Diana Rigg. I adore The Avengers, but Emma Peel wasn't exactly a challenging character to play. There also is quite a difference between her face in the picture above and in the video. It looks fake in the latter.

Btw, is Richard Dormer Natalie's brother or something?

  • FrogChicklet

The Diana Rigg performance that sticks in my head is that of Regan from "King Lear." While she's best known for The Avengers, there is so much more to her acting career than portraying Emma Peel and being a former Bond girl. She's a classically trained actress and in my humble opinion, thoroughly badass.

Come for Diana Rigg, stay for Laurence Olivier.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Hmm, okay. That seems better. I'm still a bit wary, though.

  • FrogChicklet

Here's to you being pleasantly surprised :-)

  • Rocabarra

Hmmm, my knee jerk reaction was NOOOO to Tobias Menzies as Edmure, but on second thought, I approve.

I pictured Thoros as kind of fat (not sure why), and this Missandei is far too old, but the Reeds and Tormund are so perfect that none of the rest even matters.
I'd always pictured Liam Cunningham as the Blackfish, but with him as the Onion Knight instead, this Clive Russell fella will do just fine.

  • fracas

He was fat when he was in King Robert's court, but he lost a lot of weight during the war.

  • Kala

Good casting. I pictured Selyse as being much more homely, but no complaints here.

And as cute as the Love Actually kid is, I'm kind of weirded out about the fact that, at the age of 22 (according to IMDB), he just looks like a super-stretched out version of his kid self. He hasn't changed A BIT. I'm not blaming the kid or anything, it just looks odd.

  • Thomas Sangster has always had a 10-year-old face and 50-year-old eyes. I'm not entirely sure he's human. (I love him though, and I think he should play the 13th Doctor.)

  • Kala

He's definitely cute as a button, no doubt about it. The lack of aging is just...startling.

  • Guest

Maybe they'll ugly-fy the actor for the Selyse role--or maybe not.

  • mslewis

After reading and hearing about "Game of Thrones" for the past couple of years I was really excited when Netflix finally sent me the first three discs. Couldn't wait to watch. After the first four episodes, I sent them back and deleted the other discs. This thing is AWFUL!! Seriously. What are people talking about? I guess I'm just not cool enough for this stuff. I do love Peter Dinkage so, there's that. I'll just watch "Station Agent" again.

  • Xochitl Herrera Villarreal

Loving most of these, they seem spot on. Theonly ones im kinda meh about are selyse and Shireen, pictured those two plainer, sallower, and, well, uglier. But the wildings and the reeds seem an excellent choice!

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

Let's face it, after seeing Giantsbane, they could've cast the Glee kids for the rest of the characters and I would've forgiven them. Well, ok, maybe not, but I wouldn't have taken off more than an ear.

  • Guest

I wouldn't have flayed more than two fingers.

  • Guest

Had to wrack my brains to remember who Anguy was, character-wise. Took me a mo.

Tormund! Jojen! Qyburn! Some of these are utterly dead the hell on. Glad they branched out with Queen of Thorns (Dench and Maggie Smith would have been lazy choices, however much I love them). Riggs = inspired.

Lastly, this one is happy for Nathalie Emmanuel. This one can't imagine what it must feel like to land a gig on a show already adored so much.

  • Rocabarra

Share with the class! I sure as heck don't remember Anguy. Couldn't agree more on Tormund and Jojen!

  • Guest

I could be wrong, but isn't he some highwayman archer? I can't say more without risking spoilers/deletion. Hope that triggers it for you!

  • Rocabarra

Ahhhh yes!!! I do remember now, thank you!

  • Also last seen getting the shit kicked out of him by Son of Mine. (but not really, mostly he was hiding in corners)

  • space_oddity

He's also the voice of Ferb.

  • Tinkerville

Yes, thank you! That two parter's one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes of all time and Brodie-Sangster was damn good in it.

  • Anne Lucchesi

Yeah I was thinking I've seen him in stuff since then, that picture looks about 10 years old. I remember looking him up after the Family Of Blood and thinking "crap, he's in college now?!"

  • KatSings

Love it. Especially the Love Actually kid as Jojen. That is inspired casting.

  • zeke_the_pig

Paul Kaye? Really? Now that intrigues me. Is there a Westerosi equivalent of cocaine? If not, I'll find it hard to believe his character is naturally meant to be behaving that way.

  • Fredo

One or two surprise me. I always pictured Selyse Baratheon as much, much older and far more shrewish. (Of course, that could be because GRRM loved to use the word "pinched" to describe her face).

But most are perfect. The Reed kids, the Tullys, the guy who is playing Tormund and, of course, Diana Rigg as the Queen of Thorns. Without spoiling anything, I think her role could give her the chance at some award nominations.

  • Sassafrass Green

I love all these casting choices. If we can't get Dame Maggie as Oleanna, Diana Rigg is a good choice.

Weird thing about the video though: who cares who's playing Shireen? Without getting too spoilery and with no offense meant to that sweet-seeming girl, what're we supposed to say? "Woah, she sure wore those facial prosthetics well!"

  • Sassafrass Green

By this, I mean, why there's some kind of to-do about it. I'm sure she'll be great, but she's kind of a non-character in the book.

  • chad

yes to all of the above.
