AMC's Next Project

AMC is developing a Western themed project that’s currently titled Hell on Wheels. The title refers to a wagon train of whorehouses and casinos that travels across the Wild West during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. The lead will be “a former slave-owner and Confederate soldier” who is trying to track down the Union soldiers who raped and killed his wife. He’ll be played by Anson Mount, the fella in the header pic.
In addition to Mount, they’ve already casted Dominique McElligott, an Irish Actress who will be playing “An Intelligent woman taking care of her ill husband”. I’m really not familiar with either of them but there’s also talk that they’ve casted the rapper Common to play a mixed-race freed slave.

Since it’s AMC, there is a huge chance that this show will be amazing. If you don’t watch Mad Men you’re missing out on a good thing. And if you don’t watch Breaking Bad, I … I envy you. It means you can still find tension in other shows. It ruined me. And I’m ok with it.

AMC has this way of taking a man that an audience shouldn’t like and making him into someone that you really care about. That said, can an audience root for a former slave-owner with only vengeance on his mind? It’s almost an exercise in seeing how despicable a main character can be before audiences completely turn against the show.

What does the comment section think? Are you AMC fans? Because you really should be.

I'm sorry, I can't comment on this, since I am really not ready to look past "Walking Dead" quite yet.

Maybe later.

AMC > NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX (COMBINED)

For some reason as soon as I read "Confederate soldier" I read the rest of the story with a southern drawl: "soljerrs who repped and keeled his waff."

Do you think AMC will be able to pull off a western like Deadwood? Because that kind of sounds like what they are trying to do.

Also...I'm not too sure they are going to be able to pull off The Walking Dead. From what we've seen it does look amazing, however, we haven't seen much. I'm not going to get too excited until the series actually starts.

AMC has certainly been on a roll lately. They have given me no reason to doubt there ability at this point. Though Rubicon is about to premiere and the sneak preview of that a while back seemed to not be up to their recent standards.

Penelope,
Where the hell are the SHARK WEEK related comments we were promised?

...whorehouses and casinos...

WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!

I watched one episode of Breaking Bad and completely did not get what the big deal was. Mad Men, though, has basically become a religious experience for me.

Anson Mount should be much more famous than he is. I'll keep an eye out for this.

Anybody remember the story a couple years ago about AMC buying the rights to Red Mars? Any word about that? I wanna see some Mars!

I watch and like Mad Men.

Have not watched Breaking Bad yet but I plan to.

I am chomping at the bit waiting for the Walking Dead. I think that show is going to be awesome.

Cool your jets, Mr. Porkchop Express. Shark Week doesn't officially start till August 1st. This is prep week.

But it truly warms my heart that there may be people out there who want to actually hear shark jokes instead of gutting me.

All the best TV of the last 10 years has been doing this; taking "unlikable" people and humanizing them. Mobsters, drug dealers (twice!), morticians, serial killers, etc. I guess slave owner is the next rung on the ladder, though I was holding out hope for an HBO drama about a pedophile with a heart of gold.

Todd,
I don't know which episode you watched, but you should give Breaking Bad another chance. It is a show that needs to be watched from the very beginning. Watching episodes out of order would be very hard to understand. Truly the best show currently on TV.

I'm a total AMC-slut, so I'm there.
I've been getting caught up on Breakin Bad. It's amazing.

Paul, maybe you should pitch that idea to them. You could sell them on someone like Jackie Earle Haley. Or take it to Showtime so that they could do some sort of cross-over with Dexter.

"It’s almost an exercise in seeing how despicable a main character can be before audiences completely turn against the show. "

Um, Dexter? I know it's not AMC, but you can't get more despicable AND likeable than that serial killer.

Up next? "Young Roman Polanski: The Anal Years."

The premise sounds pretty hackneyed, but it’s also fairly difficult to make a western sound fresh. Common’s not really much of a draw, but AMC’s better at taking people we’ve never heard of and elevating them to awesome. I'd give it a look, but wouldn't say I'm excited.

Why is it always Union soldiers committing atrocities against some Confederate now out for justice/revenge/what have you? It's not like battles took place solely below the Mason-Dixon line; plenty of atrocities on either side to go 'round.

Let's hope there's also a wise Chinaman who offers sage advice and/or kung fu to our Southern Hero.

*sigh*

'Scuse me; damn kids are on my lawn again.
