All This 3D and World War II

In 1942, the Battle of Midway proved to be a decisive battle that turned the tide of WWII’s Pacific campaign in favor of the Allieds.

In 1976, it became a rousing motion picture event, starring the likes of Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Hal Holbrook, James Coburn, Robert Mitchum and Toshiro Mifune.

And now? Akiva Goldsman is gonna go and fuck it all up. The Oscar-winning screenwriter behind A Beautiful Mind, Lost in Space, I, Robot, I Am Legend, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin is attached to Warner Brothers’ latest take on the critical naval conflict, as pitched by “The Pacific’s” Bruce C. McKenna.

Oh, and did I mention it’s going to be in 3D? Because if there’s anything that would’ve made, say, Pearl Harbor more bearable, it would’ve been bombs dropping right into our laps. (That is to say real bombs, not bombs like Pearl Harbor.)

Screw all this 3D everything. The only movie worth seeing in 3D is Jaws 3D. That thing rocked. Especially when viewed in regular 2D.

You know I could be fine with all this because really if someone wants to make a movie with mass appeal that actually covers something historic instead of vampires, teenage singing sensations or two aged people reading letters they wrote to each other as adolescents, then who am I to stop them.

But the 3-D stuff just has to end. It just doesn't add anything to a real story.

3-D has once again become the film studios' magic wand. Plot sucks balls? *Ding! No problem, now those balls (and any other object we can find) will be flying about with such fury that all audiences will be too busy constantly ducking to realize all of your production's shortcomings.

You'll notice that the 3-D craze seems to come back about every 30 years or so like some special effect Cicada. Like the 1950's and 1980's before, it stands to reason that sheer economics will kill this for hopefully another 30 years. Studios will tire of the extra expense after audiences get over the novelty of shit flung in their faces and realize that while it might make admission more expensive, like any effect it does nothing to make the movie better.

Until then we're going to have to ride out the storm with more than a few movies that either A) Did not need 3-D, B) Were not made in 3-D but given the illusion they were, or C) Were so shitful in the first place that making them in 3-D wouldn't make a lick of difference.

I think if I want to watch Midway, it will be the 1976 version made by people who actually lived through and participated in the era, rather than people who think the story they heard second-hand would look real cool in your face.

Why can't they make a movie about Leyte Gulf?

Posted by: Jay at August 30, 2010 11:47 AM

Talk about freaky-ass weird timing.
I just watched the original last night.

That there list of writing credits sounds like that Goldsman guy is *just* the right guy for to make a decent retelling of this material.

Huh. My sarcasm tags (with added spaces so they wouldn't disappear) disappeared.
And they didn't impart the sarcasm font.

I'm exited for this project as chance to properly bring one of the most exiting and decisive battles of WWII to life. 1976's Midway was well acted and written however its battle scenes left much to be desired. The film relied heavily on stock photage from Tora, Tora, Tora and grainy WWII era photage. Some of the photage even had shots of German!? planes.

It would be great to have a recreation of the battle of Midway with a large budget and modern special effects. As far as 3D is concerned, it's not crap as long as the movie is originally rendered in 3D (Avatar) and not in post production (The "other" Avatar)

maybe it could be directed by Joel Schumacher, and the pilots could wear nipple suits. And it could Will Smith and it would make him look cool; Maybe he has a dog that dies for no apparent reason other than to make the audience cry. Maybe Paul Bettany can whip himself.

remember 'the final countdown'? where the aircraft carrier went back in time and all these F14's just shot the hell out of the Japs (er. asian americans)? now THAT would be sweeeeet in 3d. granted i saw this as a 4 year old and was in my 'top gun' phase of life which lasted up till my mom told me that if i got shot down the iraqi's would electrocute my genitals. she acutally told me that. anyway. now i'm a dentist.

Pretty sure that Japanese pilots fighting against the US were not Americans. I mean, the actors maybe...

I agree with Jay - the Battle of Leyte Gulf deserves a movie all its own. There were three separate actions taking place, over and above the actual landings. Plenty of action.

And we could try a few other conflicts, as well.

Leyte Gulf would be cool but the story of Midway is pretty amazing. Best use of Ultra/Magic during the war and the whole thing still hinged on a squadron of dive bombers blundering into the main Japanese fleet right after Torpedo Squadron 8 flew to its glorious demise. Should look fantastic with new CGI and yes, 3D.

This has already been done with modern graphics, two times on the History Channel. Once with the old British bastard and his son and the Battle 360. While I am well versed in the Pacific Theater and know Midway very well, I rather see a movie about those that survived the invasion of Wake Island and were left to die because of the "island hoppng" strategy.
