All The Bat-Updates You Can Throw A Batarang At, Bat-Sans The Dark Knight Rises Rumors

WarnerBros. has dropped the first trailer for their new DC Universe Animated Original movie, Batman: Year One, based on the Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli graphic novel. The studio already released a featurette that showcased the movie’s cast (Ben “The O.C.” McKenzie as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Eliza “Tru Calling” Dushku as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Bryan “Breaking Bad” Cranston as Lt. James/Jim Gordon), which was probably a good idea, as this trailer barely shows any character other than Bruce, and features only McKenzie’s voice talents. If you’ve read the comic, then you know that Year One is as much, if not more, Jim Gordon’s origin story than it is Batman’s, so it seems a mite odd that the character wouldn’t appear at all in the official first trailer. But, that’s just me being a big ol’ Bryan Cranston fanboy, and everything else we’ve seen, and this trailer especially, looks to be utterly faithful to the source material. So, I’m sure I’ll get my (Hammond) druthers when the movie hits store shelves on October 18, 2011. I can’t wait.

At the very the end of the trailer, some text pops up on the screen to indicate that a Catwoman short film will be an bonus feature on the DVD/Blu-Ray. This follows suit with all of the recent DCUAO releases, creating animated shorts for (usually) lesser known characters like Jonah Hex or Captain Marvel. The quality varies from meh-to-woo on each, and Eliza Dushku is reprising her role from Year One, so it may wind up being one of the meh ones if her take on Catwoman doesn’t land on its feet. That said, based on the faintly “Aeon Flux”-y nature of the plot, written by The Animated Series scribe Paul Dini, it could easily be the best of the shorts yet:

“In Catwoman, the femme fatale tangles with crime boss Rough Cut (a brand-new character created for this short, voiced by “Futurama’s” John DiMaggio) in a breathless and brutal 15-minute chase through Gotham City tracking down a mysterious cargo shipment.”

Am I wrong, or does that not sound like a lot of fun? DiMaggio previously knocked a Bat-Villain out of Robinson Park in Batman: Under the Red Hood, and his streak of great performances is as at least as long as H. Jon Benjamin’s. Oh, and, as a bonus to bonus feature, they’ve modeled this story’s Catwoman on the Darwyn Cooke version (i.e., the best comic book Catwoman ever):

While the Arkham City design certainly has its merits, the fact that her zipper is pulled up here is a welcome touch for those who may work in corporate America. Put all these pieces together and the whole Batman: Year One package looks like we might have to do the Batusi in celebration. Again, it comes out on October 18, 2011, and I can’t wait.

Okay, one rumor from The Dark Knight Rises, just because it came and went at ludicrous speed: Adam West was seen in London around the production shot there, and naturally fans of the world’s greatest detective deduced that he must have a cameo in the movie; after all, West publicly lamented that he never got to be in Burton’s films. Or, he might be working with the Batman: Live! stage show in some capacity, where a cameo makes so much more sense. Or, he was just on vacation.

Yeah, there’s still a whole ‘nother year of this to go.

Rob Payne also writes the indie comic The Unstoppable Force, co-hosts the internet radio show/podcast We’re Not Fanboys, and is on Twitter @RobOfWar. He thinks it’s good that West probably won’t be in TDKR, as it would be too distracting for everyone involved, and West hates distractions. That’s when the Noid strikes.

Apparently, in this movie it turns out Jim Gordon hasn't been to work on a Friday in 20 years. Wish I could say the same...

I don't like that McKenzie's voice. It sounds wrong for Wayne/Batman. I know that's a stupid statement for such a short snippet, but I didn't like it. And I feel like Dushku is going to fail spectacularly at Catwoman's voice. I AM SUNSHINE AND LOLLIPOPS TODAY, FOLKS!!

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at July 8, 2011 10:18 AM

When this was first announced I skimmed the article and saw that Bryan Cranston was in it, and I nearly peed thinking of what a great Batman that guy could do. If they ever get around to Dark Knight Returns in this DC Originals series I can't think of anyone better. Ben McKenzie's alright as a young Batman, though, as far as non-Conroys go.

The worst thing about Eliza Dushku being Catwoman, I say not having heard a moment of her performance, is that Catwoman in the Arkham City game coming out around the same time is being voiced by Grey DeLisle who is just so fucking perfect oh my God, you guys. I still think Eliza Dushku can pull off certain parts but sexy cat lady isn't necessarily one of them. Grey DeLisle, on the other hand (she was Azula in Avatar: TLAB), is amazing any time sounds are coming out of her mouth.

Posted by: Jim at July 8, 2011 10:32 AM

Well, Grey DeLisle couldn't be Catwoman in the Year One thing, cause she's already voicing Barbara Gordon.

Honestly, if all DC live action movies were as consistently good to great like the animated ones... I just think about the animated Green Lantern movie which covered much the same ground as the live action version and, even though far from the best of the Bruce Timm offerings, still miles ahead of that live action dreck.

Dushku ruins everything, so I have no doubt her Catwoman will be utterly ridiculous (she wears her leather pants to get into character). But Cranston and McKenzie will make it easy to ignore her.

And unlike cranky mcgeeperpants, I'd be thrilled to see Adam West make a cameo.

Posted by: Cindy at July 8, 2011 10:56 AM

I AM NOT CRANKY.

Posted by: gp at July 8, 2011 11:04 AM

@Cindy: I'd be down with Adam West if he had a real role, and didn't just pop up on the screen like Stan Lee with a big, visual, "Hey, kids! It's me! It's Stan Lee! Buh-bye, now!"

@Pinky: I hear you on McKenzie's voice. There wasn't much to go on, but what was there certainly doesn't sound like the best Batman ever. But, maybe he's just taking himself too seriously, which would be a kind of meta way to handle the character.

@Jim: I thought the same thing about Cranston as Batman. He really would be an excellent choice for Dark Knight Returns.

Posted by: RobP at July 8, 2011 11:25 AM

I wouldn't mind a West cameo either.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at July 8, 2011 11:53 AM

NO WEST CAMEO! GOTDAMMIT.

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at July 8, 2011 12:58 PM

I would like to see the following Adam West cameo:

POV shot of Batman's shadow moving across a building as pedestrians stare and point. Close pan of Adam West, in business suit. He looks up from his Kindle, sees the shadow and mutters, "Another costumed freak," and moves on.

Posted by: The Wanderer at July 8, 2011 1:25 PM

Pinky, you and Geep need to SHUT IT RAHT NAH!

Adam West is a SAINT, like Dorothy Mantooth!

Seriously though, successive projects have had West show up and been awesome (The Grey Ghost) or interesting (as the mayor in "The Batman" series, not to mention "Family Guy"!). Since this is the last Batfilm we're likely to get for a while, let the guy show up live action for once.

If it weren't for the "Batman" TV series, Batman the character wouldn't be nearly as popular today. I understand that at one point development of the series kept DC from canceling his book, but the series DID have a lasting mark on pop culture which has been reflected in successive decades on the character.

So...show some respect, y'all, or *pewpew* with the power ring! Ya hear meh?

i wanted to say how much i hate Dushku for being in tis and then she greets me with open chest in the UPROXX ad.

goddammit. also, goddamn.

Did WB drop the video or release it? I thought that when media (or anything else for that matter) got the rhetorical "drop" it means it was given up on. As in; the idiot executives at the Fox network dropped Firefly prematurely after it's unjustly short run.

Oh, I see! You were trying to be hip like all those agingly ageless talking heads on E!TV, using that hip-hop lingo and all.

Sorry but that particualr usage of the word "drop" really really annoys me. Especially when it's used by anyone older than a tween. When I read the first sentence in this post I almost panicked thinking it meant the traditional use of the word "drop". Thank goodness I'm a whole post reader. It still doesn't make up for your hipsterly poor usage of the word drop, though.

In other news, my record "My Record Is Dropping" is dropping today.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at July 8, 2011 1:57 PM

@Darth Darko: When you write at least one of these a day, just typing "released" over and over and over gets boring. I was going to use comedian Doug Benson's form, which is "plopped," but I figured that would confuse anybody who doesn't listen to his podcast. Which is to say, most people. The multiple meanings of "dropped" is simply part of the parlance of our times, sir. Nevertheless, I'm glad to know you read my entire post and found something to comment on. Thanks!

I hate Nolan and his amateur film making given big budgets so people can't tell the difference between shite and good.

Posted by: googergieger at July 8, 2011 5:17 PM

Oooh plopped! I like that that! Mostly because plopped rhymes with dropped and sounds so much more appropriate considering most of drek that passes for entertainment recently.
