First Look at Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

The Hell? / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | June 22, 2009 | Comments (73)

USA Today premiered the first promotional photos for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (due out in March) today. And it’s actually, somehow, even more creepier than I’d expected of Tim Burton. Dark and cartoonish, I suspected — but, the images of Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter) and Helena Bonham Carter (as the Red Queen) are a coulrophobe’s nightmare. Depp looks like a Bohemian Bozo the Clown.

Also revealed were some plot details — it’s not exactly a faithful interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. It’s more of a continuation of it:

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

Strange. The Burton/Depp/Bonham Carter team can get a little tiresome and almost predictably weird, but I’m actually game for this interpretation. Check out the photos:

I don't know what frightens me more, the overall production design or the fact that Anne Hathaway is playing Alice. Hell, I'd go insane for a weird and visually disturbing Alice in Wonderland, and if it weren't for Anne, I'd embrace the freakiness. Anne does not strike me as Alice or for that matter, any actual actress in a movie. I still haven't seen Rachel Getting Married and Anne Getting Make Up to Look Ugly because she so irritates me. The rest of the casting I agree with, but couldn't they find someone like Amanda Seyfried, she seems more like an Alice to me.
Bah humbug. I guess I'll just have to deal with the TV movie version of Alice with Ben Kingsley or the one with Carol Channing as the White Queen.

Holy crap! I honestly think that picture of Helena Bonham Carter scares me as much as that creepy Gooby thing.

Posted by: fenchurch at June 22, 2009 11:09 AM

My mom hates clowns; she's not afraid of them (so she says), she just hates them. She'd probably gag if she saw these pictures.

I, however, would probably be down for seeing this.

Freaky! The Red Queen head is making my eyes hurt.

Posted by: admin at June 22, 2009 11:13 AM

@kamikazefeminist:

to make you happy: anne hathaway isn't playing alice, she is the white queen.

Posted by: marian at June 22, 2009 11:14 AM

Hathaway isn't playing Alice, she's the White Queen.

I don't know how to feel about these.

Posted by: Heathen at June 22, 2009 11:15 AM

anne hathaway isn't playing alice - she's the white witch.

here's alice! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1985859/

Posted by: kimmie at June 22, 2009 11:15 AM

For the record, Anne Hathaway is playing The White Queen, not Alice.

Posted by: jamiepants at June 22, 2009 11:16 AM

ha ha guess what I saw over at imdb.com?

a link to Pajiba in the IMBD Hit List links!

yay, Pajiba, [sniff] they grow up so fast!

Hey, I heard Anne Hathaway is not playing Alice but is the White Queen. Is that true? ;-)

Posted by: icecreammang at June 22, 2009 11:20 AM

I'm loving it. Weirdos can make anything interesting.

EYEBROWS!!!!

Posted by: BWeaves at June 22, 2009 11:23 AM

Johnny Depp looks like he wants to EAT my SOUL. I'm not sure if I want that.

Why does the phrase "girl power" make me twitch?

Posted by: Melissa at June 22, 2009 11:24 AM

I'm 100% on board with this. There are only 2 Burton movies I've disliked (Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks), his track record is sky high for me. This looks like it will either be a grand slam or a complete disaster, no in between. At least it gives me something to look forward to at the movies beyond this incredibly mediocre summer.

Posted by: TylerDFC at June 22, 2009 11:25 AM

Whew, that kind of lifted a heavy weight off of my chest. I remember the girl who played Alice in In Treatment.
Which reminds me, I need to watch more of that show. Like crack it is.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at June 22, 2009 11:27 AM

"Why does the phrase "girl power" make me twitch?"

Because extremely muscular 6 year olds are TERRIFYING.

Eh, I'll give it a shot, but there's too much CGI for my tastes.

Posted by: Kate at June 22, 2009 11:28 AM

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power

This phrase makes me want to firebomb a Libby Lu. What? They went out of business? Let's see who is next on the list...Limited Too it is.

Posted by: branded at June 22, 2009 11:30 AM

The girl from 'Defiance' is playing Alice, as I understand it - the one that married the youngest brother?

I'm excited, that's for sure. Wonderfully wacky is the way this story should be told, and Depp's film choices are almost always spot on (by my estimation). I would usually scoff at Burton's casting (again) of his wife, but I truly can't think of a more appropriate actress for the role.

Posted by: kalafraja at June 22, 2009 11:34 AM

I agree that the whole Depp/Burton/Carter franchise can feel a little tiresome and weird to be weird, but they at least have great source material in Alice in Wonderland. I mean, it is seriously creepy and scary story, and hopefully, if they have the courage, they can make a good movie.

When I say "courage" I guess I'm thinking specifically of "Planet of the Apes.' If Burton had made a violent, graphically violent movie, with s freak-out ape/human sex tension thing going on, he would have really made a stunning reinterpretation of the classic, but they wanted to keep their rating, blah, blah, blah, and ended up making a disappointing piece of shit that managed to be neither a kid movie or one that anybody over 15 would enjoy.

Posted by: michael murray at June 22, 2009 11:35 AM

That dark moaning sound you just heard? That was Alabamapink shrieking from beyond that why the fuck can't he leave the story alone. I'd be careful where you sleep, Mr. Burton. The dead can go anywhere, and they love AiW. Girl Power? What the shit? And when, for the love of all things right and pure, will Helena Bonham Carter get hit by a bus?

Posted by: ahamos at June 22, 2009 11:38 AM

It looks like it's going to be wonderfully entertaining on some level. Perhaps not the level Burton intended, but entertaining none the less.

Also, for those who love to call actresses out for "ugly-ing up" for a role, can we have a special discussion on Johnny Depp doing the same? I have never seen a more attractive man go to such extreme lengths to disguise said attractiveness.

Posted by: Genny (actually Rusty now) at June 22, 2009 11:40 AM

You know the whole "do not speak ill of the dead," thing ahamos? They don't really like you speaking for them, either.

Posted by: Kate at June 22, 2009 11:42 AM

a link to Pajiba in the IMBD Hit List links!

I hope this doesn't mean we have to start behaving like adults, or human beings, or anything like that.

I for one love these pictures and can't wait to see this movie. I actually hadn't looked at the cast list since it only had Depp and Carter on it, and OMG! Alan Rickman is the Caterpillar?! Stephen Fry is the Cheshire Cat?! Christopher Lee is the Jabberwock?! Michael Sheen is the White Rabbit?! Crispin Glover is the Knave of Hearts?! OMG. OMG, you bunch of mayo-haters. Fan-effing-tastic.

Also, not to pick a fight, but TylerDFC, how does one go about not liking Mars Attacks? That's crazy talk, man. Crazy. Talk.

Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood on acid in that photo.

Posted by: prawntastic at June 22, 2009 11:54 AM

Nice save, Kate. And have you heard? Anne Hathaway is playing the White Queen, not Alice.

Posted by: Skewicide Blonde at June 22, 2009 12:01 PM

Anna: I know that puts me in the minority, but I really hated that movie. I wanted to leave 5 minutes into it. Too much forced whimsy and good actors shamelessly overacting. Saw it opening night too, I was really psyched for it.

Posted by: TylerDFC at June 22, 2009 12:01 PM

Johnny Depp looks like he wants to EAT my SOUL. I'm not sure if I want that.

Posted by: Melissa at June 22, 2009 11:24 AM

Johnny Depp can eat anything of mine he wants.

I don't remember IT being in Alice in Wonderland...only in Burtonland.

Posted by: dammitjanet at June 22, 2009 12:02 PM

Frankly, those pictures make me more excited to see the film in 2010. It looks like, instead of just rehashing the original illustrations or slightly tweaking the Disney model, we're getting Burton's "fully apeshit" vision. As Sleepy Hollow is the best Hammer horror flick NOT made by Hammer Studios, and Sweeney Todd was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise, I'll choose to remember that Burton's earned plenty of goodwill with me and give him the benefit of the doubt here.

And, as you all seem to have missed a spot on that particular dead horse, let me say that Anne Hathaway is NOT playing Alice. She's playing the White Queen.

Posted by: David at June 22, 2009 12:10 PM

Alan Rickman is the Caterpillar?! Stephen Fry is the Cheshire Cat?!

NOW I'm excited to see this. If the creepy pictures weren't enough to do the job.

Posted by: Melissa at June 22, 2009 12:12 PM

Is anybody else disturbed by how much Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood in that getup? It's...uncanny. Yes. Very uncanny.

I decided long ago that I will look at anything Tim Burton sees fit to put on film. I am never sorry. Even when the story itself is not all that, the visuals at the very least are worth seeing.

I will totally venture to the theater to see this when it comes out.

Posted by: Jerce at June 22, 2009 12:18 PM

Am I the only one who thinks Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood in that picture?

Posted by: icecreammang at June 22, 2009 12:33 PM

Preach it, brother. I can't stand her, and my only exception is tolerating her as Bellatrix Lestrange because I hate that bitch anyways.

Posted by: Nicole at June 22, 2009 12:36 PM

It might be me, but I think Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood in that pic.

Also, I heard that Anne Hathaway is not playing Alice, but the White Queen instead. Just fyi.

Posted by: Nadine at June 22, 2009 12:46 PM

That's all right, Kate. But she was really and truly afraid of what Tim Burton would do to her beloved Alice. And while she did not share my innate disgust at HBC, she at least didn't like her, either.

Posted by: ahamos at June 22, 2009 12:49 PM

You know, its odd....Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood in that picture.

Oh, and did you know that Anne Hathaway is playing the White Queen?

Huh...the things you find out on Pajiba

Posted by: dammitjanet at June 22, 2009 12:50 PM

Completely fucking lame and predictable. Honestly. Am I the only one who´s completely tired of Burton's schtick? The guy has been doing the same thing for 30 years and you know EXACTLY what that whole movie's gonna be- the same pseudo-gothic shit, colors at 50% saturation, all swirls and "creepy" that was original 20 movies ago but is now just completely fucking tired. He even casts the same goddamn people in everything, and frankly speaking Depp and Bonham-Carter don't exactly have a lot of range. I can predict that Mad Hatter will just be Willy Wonka's twin evil brother and Bonham Carter will be, well, herself. Blech.

Am not at all excited about this, because I know exactly what it's going to be.

Release the hounds. I'm not afraid of you.

Posted by: figgy at June 22, 2009 12:52 PM

The characters look great, the cast is fantastic, but does anyone else feel that the visuals look a little too much like a cross between Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Yes, very much so. Creepy.

But the eyes give him away, those mad, mad eyes that have seen the far side of the void and saw it staring back...

Posted by: Neodiogenes at June 22, 2009 12:56 PM

I think it looks intriguing, because Alice in Wonderland has sort of always had the Tim Burtonish feel to me. Although, Johnny Depp really kind of reminds me of Elijah Wood in the pictures. Is it just me?

Does anyone know who's playing the White Queen?

Posted by: Lainey at June 22, 2009 12:58 PM

figgy I could NOT agree with you more about Burton's. He ceased to be relevant or interesting a long time ago.

Tim Burton's primary reason for existence now is to make retarded suburbanites feel edgy.

Just because you wear a Nightmare Before Christmas hoodie when you're picking up Madison from ballet does not mean you're a fucking goth, bitch.

Posted by: Big Daddy at June 22, 2009 1:22 PM

Well, I like the shot of the flower garden. That was always my favorite part of the Disney animated version.

However, HBC looks oddly skewed and that is resulting in her appearing to have a baby hand. Which I cannot abide. Baby hands scare me.

Excuse me while I go weep in a corner.

Posted by: Sharon at June 22, 2009 1:53 PM

Actually, Sharon, if you look at her again, I think you'll notice that she actually has a giant bobblehead, and everything else looks tiny, hands, shoulders, etc.

Honestly, it's no less creepy, though.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 22, 2009 1:57 PM

I will see this movie for Stephen Fry alone. The man is entirely under-recognized here in the US. He's a genius.

Add me to non-likers-list for Mars Attacks. I also went opening night, and was major disappointed.

This, however, looks interesting enough that I'm keeping an open mind.

Posted by: Drake at June 22, 2009 2:29 PM

My skin crawls. The original Disney version is too creepy for me to watch to this day, so I will definitely be torturing myself by watching this.

Posted by: Morgagod at June 22, 2009 3:09 PM

Depp I'll at least acknowledge as a good actor - he truly immerses himself in his characters, rather than playing himself in different movies like so many do. Bonham-Carter just plays weird, all the time. Fry will definitely get my interest, as will Hathaway (but I fear she'll be overdressed) - all this talent, and they had to shackle it to such a nonsensical story as AiW? Pity. It'll be a good fit for Burton, but there's no way the plot can regain my interest.

Nice to see you out and about, ahamos. If it matters, I didn't mean anything personal about the above AiW crack - I'd rather go unhaunted/tormented if at all possible - put in a good word?

Posted by: lordhelmet at June 22, 2009 3:51 PM

Looks interesting...Tim Burton's done some interesting films over the years. So i'll definitely see this.

I just hope that it doesn't stray too far from the original story.

Posted by: gp at June 22, 2009 4:13 PM

We totally can. I hate it when we're in a fight. It makes my tummy rumbly.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 22, 2009 4:23 PM

While I'm still very skeptical about this whole thing (mainly because Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite books), Mia Wasikowska was stellar on "In Treatment" and so I'm pretty confident she'll make an excellent Alice. She also looks surprisingly similar to the way Alice was originally illustrated, so that's a plus.

Posted by: Penelope at June 22, 2009 4:33 PM

I'm looking forward to this. My birthday's in March, so it's gonna be my movie of choice.

This past year I got I Love You, Man, which was fine and dandy, but then my dog got killed. Day after my birthday. Really. So even if completely blows, which I doubt, it will still be a better birthday than this past year.

Posted by: Nadha at June 22, 2009 5:34 PM

Sooooo nobody else is bothered by the CGI out the ass effect Burton has put into this?

Well I have a problem with it!

Other then that I'm excited to see the stellar cast in action.

Posted by: Wormer at June 22, 2009 5:37 PM

AvB
I don't care how the ratios work out. Either the head is giant, or the head is normal and now she has a baby hand!!
I'm all freaked out now, taunted by memories of my childhood nemesis, who had a baby hand. And made me hold it. And painted her sharp little baby nails.

((shudder))

Posted by: Sharon at June 22, 2009 5:59 PM

HOOK?

Posted by: zito at June 22, 2009 6:53 PM

I don't think HBC has baby hands or bobble head. She's got a, a seventyhead. I could build a house on that space between her cheekbone and her hairline!

It scares me.

Posted by: ScienceGeek at June 22, 2009 7:45 PM

Disappointed in the Mad Hatter. I wanted sexy/creepy Depp as Mad Hatter not evil clown. There is never ever anything sexy about evil clowns. However the landscape looks cool and the girl they got to play Alice is very homely so that should make the Hathaway haters happy. They can out pale each other.

Posted by: midfan at June 22, 2009 8:35 PM

For me, Burton has perhaps the most even hit:miss ratio in Hollywood. I've enjoyed some of his films (Big Fish, Sweeney Todd) and found others to be over-designed, over-quirked nonsense (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

So I am neither excited nor full of dread about Alice In Wonderland. It looks like it could go either way. Colour me mildly curious.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at June 22, 2009 10:24 PM

No problem, lordhelmet. Amanda did not expect conformity and supplication to all things Alice. Just that it be respected and not dinked with, ala she's running away from a society ball. 'Cause really, I'm guessing that's just the tip of the iceberg. I mean, you do remember how he ended Planet of the Why Did I Just Spend $8 For That, right? If you saw it, that is...

I'll go on record as saying that with new material, I think Timmy B makes great stuff. When he rehashes, it's almost always poo.

Posted by: ahamos at June 22, 2009 11:43 PM

I have never been a fan of Tim Burton. I regard anything that he doesn't taint to be chance. Maybe he was good at some point, but now he just gives of that whole Bono-head-up-ass vibe.

I would be interested in watching a very dark AiW. Almost horror, in that everything is fucking outright creepy and terrible but horribly sexy at the same time.

I know the vibe of the book IS more creepy insanity than horror but I think it would be an interesting interpretation, if done by people with talent.

Amanda dragged me to a viewing of that cracktastic version in college. There wasn't enough alcohol in the world to make it coherent to me.
