The CW is not a network that typically does well in overall viewers, or even among the 18-49 set. It’s a network that likes to brag about winning the 18-24 female demographic, the 22-29 male demographic, or the kickboxing hobo demographic. It’s niche.

But hell if the Arrow spin-off, The Flash, didn’t put up huge numbers not only for the network, but even against its spiritual rival, ABC’s Agents of SHIELD.

Last night’s Agents of SHIELD mustered a tepid 4.39 million viewers and a 1.6 in the 18-49 demo. Meanwhile, an hour earlier over on the CW, The Flash put up 4.5 million viewers and a 1.8 in the demo in its premiere.

Not only that, but The Flash also handily beat its direct competition over on ABC, Selfie (3.9 million viewers, and a 1.1 in the demo) and Manhattan Love Project, which was at an anemic 3.2 million viewers and a .9 in the demo. Neither of those sitcoms are likely to last the season.

Of course, in overall viewers, they both fared better in the overnight ratings than New Girl and Mindy Project (2.55 million, and 2.19 million viewers), which continue to suffer ratings erosion, even now that Utopia has been pulled from Tuesday nights (it was replaced by a Family Guy rerun, which was about even with last week’s Utopia).

Of course, in the real world, outside of the Internet bubble where the most of us live, The Voice and the two NCIS procedurals dominated the night.
