A Tale of Two Jennifers: Lawrence to Iceland, Ehle to '50 Shades of Grey'

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | October 8, 2013 | Comments ()

Zero Dark Thirty’s Jennifer Ehle is the latest actress to be added to the cast of 50 Shades of Grey, according to Deadline. Ehle will join Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam as the mother of Anastasia Steele (Johnson), which makes sense, age-wise, because Ehle is 20 years old than Johnson. Ehle, by the way, is also the daughter of Rosemary Harris, who played the grandmother in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man flicks.

Jennifer Ehle looks like this.

Meanwhile, another Jennifer — Lawrence — is negotiating to reteam with her Hunger Games director, Gary Ross, for Burial Rites, an adaptation of Hannah Kent’s novel of the same name centering on a murder trial in Iceland in 1829. According to Variety, “The story centers on a woman who is charged with the brutal murder of her former master. While awaiting execution, she is sent to an isolated farm, where the family is initially horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer.”

You are now up to speed on your Jennifers for today.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Burial Rites is an absolutely phenomenal book (and Hannah Kent is super lovely) and Lawrence would make a magnificent Agnes.

  • Sars

I watched Ehle in Contagion- She reminded me so much of M Streep, I thought they were sisters or something. She has the same natural calmness. Anyway, everyone's gotta eat, and a big ass paycheck never hurts.

  • JenVegas

I had a small bowl of french onion soup for lunch and it greatly improved my sore throat. NOW you are up to speed on your Jennifers for today.

  • Uriah_Creep

Thank you! I was about to write "But Dustin, what of JenVegas?"

  • So what you are saying is Jennifer Lawrence is going to be on screen with an Irish accent? I am intrigued and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

  • bastich

What's that Jennifer-Something from "Friends" up to these days? I never see any news about her.

  • Bert_McGurt

Eh, she probably got married and had a bunch of babies.

  • L.O.V.E.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Tilly is doing a straight to video Chucky sequel, and was recently spotted in the intimates section of a JC Penny doing lines from Bound with a manequin.

  • Mrs. Julien

    [cursing demise of EE]

  • bastich

I'd still pay to see that.

  • John W

Ehle was the original actress cast as Catelyn Stark.

  • Sara_Tonin00

That would've been different. I really like Fairley's Catelyn though, so I'm counting this as a win. (plus, a lesser known actress gets to break out in her 40s.)

  • John W

She's done such a great job, I can't imagine anyone else playing that role now.

  • khaleesoy

I love love Fairley, but man, I was pretty bummed to not have seen the hotness of Ehle/Bean. That would have been phenomenal.

  • Maddy

Oh Jennifer Ehle you are so much better than this. You were Elizabeth Bennett goddammit!

  • Mrs. Julien

    I'm sorry, I can't, it's the.. the blasphemy, it's too much, I have to -

    Elizabeth Bennet. One "t".

    I mean, really!

Also, Lydia is a slattern. Also, if I had ever learnt to play the pianoforte, I should have been a great proficient.

    I feel so much better.

  • Maddy

As a spelling nazi I am so ashamed. In my defence, I wrote that this morning before I had coffee ...

  • Bert_McGurt

Fun fact: we actually HAD a working (though out-of-tune) pianoforte back at the ol' fur trade fort. I do not believe it's the famous one that Lady Frances Simpson had brought to Red River, however.

  • mrsdalgliesh

Thank you. This news made me weep. (Also, Jennifer has always reminded me of Meryl Streep, so I expect her to have *some* standards.)

  • Sara_Tonin00

It's the cheeks and weird pursy mouth.

Oh, and the excellent acting. And mellifluous speaking voice.

  • Bert_McGurt

"...Rosemary Harris, who played the grandmother in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man flicks."

And the wrath begins in 3, 2...

  • mrsdalgliesh

Are you referring to the wrath I feel when I think, "Rosemary Harris, Tony award winner, Shakespeare vet, star of Holocaust" and then I see "played the grandmother in Spiderman? That wrath?

  • Bert_McGurt

Well, if it makes you feel any better - she didn't play the grandmother in Spider-man...

  • Sara_Tonin00

I think it's the wrath that's she's not a grandmother but an aunt (great aunt?)

  • mrsdalgliesh

Ohhhh. That. Ok, so two kinds of wrath.

  • Misa

Jennifer Ehle also is an accomplished Britsh actress (she was Elizabeth Bennet in Firth's Pride and Prejudice, and was first choice for the role of Lady Stark in GOT but renounced due to conflicting schedules). Which makes it even sadder that she is linked to those 50 shades of mess.

  • Mrs. Julien

"Firth's" Pride and Prejudice? I guess we know where that one landed on the history scale.

  • Anne At Large

I have the proverbial sads for my favorite Lizzie Bennet right now.

  • pfeiffer87

Is she British? I thought she was American

  • Sara_Tonin00

She is indeed American; she fakes the Brit well.

I'm stymied that she's doing this movie.

  • BigBlueKY

Jennifer Ehle was great in Zero Dark Thirty. It makes me sad that "50 Shades of Grey" will now be on her resume next to an incredibly gripping and emotional film such as Zero.

  • Joe Grunenwald

Yeah, but that huge paycheck's going to look great in her bank account.
