A Shameless but Earnest Call for Votes

A couple years ago, the South by Southwest Festival introduced the PanelPicker, an online system that let people vote on what kinds of panels they’d be interested in seeing presented at the fest. The reader votes account for about 30 percent of a panel’s final score, with the rest of the weight given to SXSW staff and an advisory board. (More info on that breakdown here.)

This is where I humbly ask for your help: I’ve submitted an idea for a panel for SXSW 2011, and I’d love it if you’d vote for it. The title is “You Are Not a Publicist: Criticism vs. Advertising.” The goal of the panel discussion is to talk with other critics and the audience about the appropriate relationship between a critic and the studio whose content they cover, and how that relationship can be compromised in the digital age if a critic isn’t careful. The independent spirit behind it is one of the things that makes Pajiba an interesting place: I believe a critic’s duty is first and foremost to the work at hand, not to those who promote the work. The panel will hopefully be able to round up interesting viewpoints from all corners of the critical world, and I think it’s got the potential to start some important and fun discussions about our collective passion for movies.

Anyway: If you could be so kind, head on over and vote for the panel to be included in next year’s festival. You do have to create an account to vote, which I know feels like a hassle, but I’d greatly appreciate it if you’d take a minute to do so and help me out. Thanks a bunch.

What a great panel concept. I'd be shocked if it isn't picked up; it's so, um, timely.

Dude, that is the slowest fucking website. First I couldn’t confirm my registration. Then I couldn’t find your panel. And finally when I got to it, there was a “voting is now closed” error. Jeebus, they need to fix that shit.

(I sincerely hope that all the errors are due to the angry, stampeding Pajiba mob overtaking their server with our votes. If so, please disregard the above.)

What Scully said. I'll be voting for you as soon as I can find you. Even if I don't always agree with your reviews, I find them thoughtful and interesting and I think you have a good perspective and a lot to say.

Also, panels are fun. I did my own for the first time this year. Tres cool.

How many times are we allowed to vote? Because I didn't notice the 'You have successfully voted' message and just kept on clicking. So you probably have 15 or so votes from me alone. Can't hurt.

I'll do this as soon as I get home tonight. Or, tomorrow. Either way, done and done. And I mean done.

I tried to vote but it said "voting is currently closed".

I'll vote for it if you nerds invite me to be a panelist.

Voted for you sir. I actually like your topic.

Tada.

Great idea. Can you guys get Harry Knowles on that panel, please. He needs a heaping spoonful of modesty crammed down his gullet.

Oh. And the vote is in.

Also done, finally.
