A Piece of Sh*t Director Calls Terrence Malick's Tree of Life a Piece of Sh*t

Uwe Boll, acclaimed director of House of the Dark, Postal, Bloodrayne and Rampage said of Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life in an interview with ScreenJunkies: “I totally hated that movie because I feel as a filmmaker that besides the fact that Terrence Malick did some great visuals on some movies, also on The New World, like the opening of that movie was really good but then he completely lost it. I think Tree of Life is a piece of shit. Totally, and I think Sean Penn is ridiculous in it, like walking around in the elevator. It’s nothing. This is the thing. It’s so overrated because it’s Terrence Malick. Same as Lars von Trier’s movies. I like Breaking the Waves. After that was all crap. The thing is he gets all the Hollywood stars, “Oh, I want to work with him” and they don’t know what kind of retard he is. I think the same with Terrence Malick. I think Terrence Malick is one of the overrated directors of all time.”

Never stop being classy, you dumb son of a bitch. (For the complete interview, and to see what Boll had to say about The Adjustment Bureau, check out ScreenJunkies).

Uh oh, Dustin, don't piss him off. He's going to challenge you to a fight.

Posted by: Snath at July 1, 2011 9:21 AM

Oh, Uwe. Don't you know that YOU are the piece of shit retard?

Posted by: Kballs at July 1, 2011 9:36 AM

This isn't the first time I've heard these opinions of Tree of Life. Perhaps they're voiced a bit stronger than some critics have stated them, but I've heard some people think it's a bit too meandering and Sean Penn is pretty bad in it. Is it only a problem because Uwe Boll said it?

Posted by: Robert at July 1, 2011 9:49 AM

I went to see "The Thin Red Line".

Never again.

Posted by: Jay at July 1, 2011 9:54 AM

Maybe Mr. Boll Weevil is miffed because not so many Hollywood stars want to work with him, but choose to work with a "retard".

Posted by: DenG at July 1, 2011 9:56 AM

Is it only a problem because Uwe Boll said it?

I don't ask the monkey who flings the poo what he thinks of the Picassos.

Posted by: twig at July 1, 2011 10:21 AM

Why do we care what dumb people think?

Posted by: Slash at July 1, 2011 10:35 AM

On the one hand its Uwe but I can't ignore the fact that Penn is a major ham.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 1, 2011 10:46 AM

Ditto on Thin Red Line. Aside from a few key performances, the film made me want to swallow my tongue.

Can't comment on Tree though. I'm willing to give it a look.

Posted by: Protoguy at July 1, 2011 10:47 AM

hahahahaha, this is like an amoeba complaining about the Gods!

Posted by: Magiel at July 1, 2011 10:52 AM

my dad shares his opinions on Malick & Penn(for TREE OF LIFE) and Lars Von Trier and he's not the one and only

Posted by: carrie at July 1, 2011 10:57 AM

Here's why Boll's statements are a problem, at least in the context of good filmmaking versus bad. He's not qualified to make statements about what constitutes a good film or a good performance. Maybe I wouldn't feel that way if he'd shown the SLIGHTEST GRASP of any of the core tenets of his chosen craft, but he hasn't. Ever. Even people like us, who only LOVE movies, are more qualified to say whether or not something is a piece of shit. Uwe Boll is not qualified to be a human being, and as a friend reminded me, he's directing Auschwitz in 2012. THERE'S your world-ender, right there.

As an aside, Jay, we'll fight about A Thin Red Line.

Posted by: Smokin at July 1, 2011 11:01 AM

And let me say for the record, that Malick is not infallible, and has a tendency to get weighed down under his own ego. Von Trier...well, not my cup of tea. I turned off Antichrist before it even got to the "good" part.

Posted by: Smokin at July 1, 2011 11:03 AM

i think he's just mad dat the only "Hollywood stars" dat wants to work wit him are Kristanna Loken and Christian Slater.

actually i feel bad for writing dat bout Loken coz she is so fine and i still heart Slater from Interview with the Vampire and dat flood movie with Minnie Driver. Minnie Driver. Hmmmm. oops, detour.

Posted by: haplo at July 1, 2011 11:07 AM

The few times I've seen Uwe Boll speak and field audience questions suggest he actually knows quite a bit about current movies and movie history. He loves films. I trust him more as a critic than as a filmmaker.

Posted by: Robert at July 1, 2011 11:09 AM

Is haplo an alter ego one of you regulars made up just to annoy me? It's working.

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 1, 2011 11:17 AM

Are you really defending him, Robert?

Posted by: Smokin at July 1, 2011 11:21 AM

Because if so, I'm out.

Posted by: Smokin at July 1, 2011 11:22 AM

@PaddyDog, get out of my head!

Posted by: Groundloop at July 1, 2011 11:48 AM

Boll needs a mirror, or one of those guys who used to play a part in a Roman triumph.

But instead of whispering to the guest of honor, "Remember, thou art mortal," he'd whisper, "You're an asshole" into Uwe's pink and shell-like.

Posted by: The Wanderer at July 1, 2011 11:51 AM

The New World is the BEST cure for insomnia out there. You'll fall asleep in 30 minutes or less. I highly recommend it!

Uwe Boll is still an asshole, though.

Posted by: Figgy at July 1, 2011 11:52 AM

"I trust him more as a critic than as a filmmaker."

Posted by: Robert at July 1, 2011 11:09 AM

Yeah, I trust him more as a critic than as a nuclear physicist. The fact remains, he is cinematic herpes. He's irritating, repugnant and just when you think he's gone for good...

Posted by: DarthBrookes at July 1, 2011 11:55 AM

Here's the thing, you don't have to be an excellent pilot, or even know where the cockpit is located, in order to know that the plane is falling out of the fucking sky.

Posted by: The Kilted Yaksman at July 1, 2011 12:02 PM

Kinda like the shit calling the toilet brown...

Posted by: Odnon. at July 1, 2011 12:03 PM

Smokin, I'm saying there are many reasons to criticize Uwe Boll. I'm not understanding why this criticism that has been lobbied by other people before him is invalid because people don't like Boll's movies. It's like saying Dustin isn't allowed to review superhero films because he throws out digs at fanboys in between explaining why he thinks the films aren't great. They might all be connected to film, but one action does not necessarily preclude the validity of another.

And for the record, I think he's a horrible filmmaker. The only nice thing I can say about his skill level is that he did a very good job making grass look super green in Bloodrayne.

Posted by: Robert at July 1, 2011 12:24 PM

The Tree of Life is a shitty movie. It really is, and the critical reception to it has by and large been sycophantic and profoundly misplaced. I LOVE every other Malick film I've seen, but in The Tree of Life the emperor has no clothes, and it's appalling that so few have called him out on it, so I say props to Boll. And Lordy, you don't have to be a master of a craft to have an informed critical opinion on it. I mean, shit, have you never taken a film course? Who do you think teaches those, great film directors?

Posted by: Michael Murray at July 1, 2011 12:30 PM

Never saw any of Boll's movies, but the last decent Mallick movie was Badlands. I guess I'm just not into his lyricalness--his lyricality or whatever.

Posted by: John Zeller at July 1, 2011 12:30 PM

PaddyDog, Yeah I'm just about at my breaking point with "dat".

Posted by: Paultera at July 1, 2011 12:36 PM

pattidog why you am think that people fake write sutff just to get on your brain nervees. thatss illy. you silly

Posted by: derp at July 1, 2011 1:14 PM

I don't have the words.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at July 1, 2011 1:46 PM

The solution is clear... THUNDERDOME! Two directors walk in, only one walks out.

Posted by: logan at July 1, 2011 2:29 PM

To be fair, Boll is right about Lars von Trier. I don't think von Trier even likes movies. His Dogme 95 manifesto is complete bullsh for anyone who actually wants to tell compelling, clear, stories in a filmic nature.

And leave haplo alone, guys. He/she is a regular who doesn't stir the pot, just likes to share whatever is on their mind, and then move on. Cherish those comments, or else karma will punish us with more Big Todds.

Posted by: RobP at July 1, 2011 3:43 PM

Delurking, briefly, to step up and say I agree with Robert. Say what you will about Boll, he's still entitled to his opinion on Malick, and has as much right to express it as any of us do, and probably more knowledge to back up those opinions. He's at least made films, bad though they may (or may not) be. Yes, he goes about it in an assy way, but he still has a valid point.

Posted by: cydeleida at July 1, 2011 3:47 PM

If haplo is a regular (I have only seen him/her pop up recently), he/she might notice that we tend to communicate without emulating the "style" of a 13 year old texting his friends during class.
I reserve the right to make fun of anyone who intentionally butchers language as haplo has done in the past few weeks. Is it too hard to spell "that"?

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 1, 2011 3:54 PM

So two shit directors don't like each other? Alright.

Posted by: googergieger at July 1, 2011 4:18 PM

Damn, I could have used that RSS feed thingy for this page because look at this. Hilarious.

(I'm adding bold to the itallics because the preview looked horrible without it)

Is haplo an alter ego one of you regulars made up just to annoy me? It's working.

Well, I've been here since 2006 so that makes me a regular, right? And I only have one alter ego so...

@PaddyDog, get out of my head!

Actually, it's my head but fine.

PaddyDog, Yeah I'm just about at my breaking point with "dat".

Sorry?

me am like moovies! uwe bowl is good derecter and me love him. me am no like dat u make fun of him and call him bad things
pattidog why you am think that people fake write sutff just to get on your brain nervees. thatss illy. you silly

You slay me.

And leave haplo alone, guys. He/she is a regular who doesn't stir the pot, just likes to share whatever is on their mind, and then move on. Cherish those comments, or else karma will punish us with more Big Todds.

*tips hat*

And PaddyDog? I've always thought that BiblioGeek got the haplo right when he?she? said:

I am equally baffled by this haplo person, DeistBrawler. They seem to use text spelling, but have sort of complete sentences and perfect grammar, right down to using 'may have' instead of 'may of', a classic teenager (or '(Twi)Lighthead') mistake. They take umbrage at your implication, but don't attack you with name-calling and abuse, yet manage to defend themself with what seem to be valid points, though I don't know what Malay or Tamil are. The spelling screams high schooler, the grammar and content politely introduces itself as Pajiban while eyeing you lasciviously. Who is this mysterious mystery man/woman?

And no PaddyDog, it's not too hard to spell "that". I'm just reserving my right to spell "dat" as dat.

Posted by: haplo at July 1, 2011 4:52 PM

I'm not trying to rip on haplo, in fact I've held my tongue on his grammar for a while because he shares his thoughts decently and has intelligent things to say. It's what bugs me actually, that he can converse just fine except when typing "that" and "because". It's not a big deal and I'm not trying to run them off, I'm just saying I'll take a person's comments a lot more seriously if they take the extra .0002 seconds to type the "th" instead of the "d".

I'm also grumpy today and want to be out of this hot ass cubicle and out in the hot ass sun drinking beer. So that may be contributing to my grammar irritation today.

Posted by: Paultera at July 1, 2011 4:57 PM

I'm confused. Is Haplo a smart middle schooler,a dumb adult,or a Saints "who dat" fan.

Paddy Dog, I think it's safe to say that neither Haplo or Derp will ever qualify as eloquents

Is Pajiban a religion or a nationality, and can I be one?

I can see it now on all future forms

Nationality? Irish-American Pajiban.

Will Paultera ever get that beer?

Posted by: kirbyjay at July 1, 2011 10:19 PM

and who is Big Todd?

Posted by: kirbyjay at July 1, 2011 10:20 PM

Argumentum ad hominem is the logical fallacy of attempting to undermine a speaker's argument by attacking the speaker instead of addressing the argument.

Nuff said re: Boll/Malick?

(Go, Haplo!)

Posted by: PaulB at July 2, 2011 3:57 PM

To this day i am just waiting in the weeds to maul that fuck Mallick. "The Thin Red Line" is a goddamn crime against humanity.

Zoysia resembles the fescue, it is not fussy in that it does not require as much watering, nor does it grow quickly. The fact that it grows slower means saving time for the homeowner who obviously doesn't need to mow it as frequently.
