"Spaced" -- The American Remake?

No no. Don’t worry. There’s not a “Spaced” remake coming to American television. It seems they’ve already attempted it, and it failed so spectacularly that the pilot was never even aired, and we’re all thus saved from the tarnishing of memory. Someone should get some credit for shit-canning this, a rare right move for a US television executive.

If you’re curious, though, from what we were saved from, here’s a clip from the pilot for the American remake. It’s terrible. A bullet in the head terrible, although it will make you appreciate the original — especially the casting — even more. It’s a complete irredeemable mess.

Here’s a clip, compliment of Simon Pegg’s Twitter (via Slashfilm). Note: You’re going to need to crank up the volume, cause the sound — like the show — ain’t right:

Faaak. You scared the shit out of me.
Thank fuck it never got anywhere and no I am not curious and I shall not taint myself with what surely will be an abortion of note.

It's atrocious.

I hear they're remaking Shameless.

Once again, HANDS OFF THE BRIT SHOWS!!! They are awesome just as they are, fully done across the pond. We only fuck shit up here.

Damnit Rowles! That title nearly gave me a heart attack!

@TSF What?!!

Afraid so, Kiddo:

Emmy Rossum as Fiona Gallagher. Get tae fuck.

Posted by: TSF at March 4, 2010 1:13 PM

Le sigh.

Posted by: Kiddo at March 4, 2010 1:19 PM

I hate Emmy Rossum. With the fiery passion you all reserve for Katherine Heigl. HAAAATE.

Jesus hot buttered Christ, why did I watch that? That was the longest four minutes ever. I am not even being hyperbolic when I say that I think I fell asleep for a few seconds around the three-quarter mark.

I think I might just go have a little cry now. A cry while hugging the Spaced DVD box set and regular Spaced DVDs. Thats right I bought the box set when I already owned the series on DVD, now you can see just how much watching the clip hurt me inside.

wow. I thought I was going to turn into the Hulk for a second there. whew!
* sighs in relief ... that would suck.

Holy lack of comedic timing, Batman!

I kept watching it, thinking it was a joke. Like someone set out to make the worst thing possible.

'Scuse me while I go watch Spaced. Again.

Anger, pain, fear, aggression! Exactly.

Posted by: Cara at March 4, 2010 7:03 PM

...why did they change every character's name except for Marsha?

That is one of the most painful things I have ever seen. My brain is still trying to escape. It is pounding at my skull in a desperate bid for freedom, angry with me for inflicting that much crap on it in such a short period of time. I'm so sorry brain. I had no idea it would be that bad.

Wow, this was great! I can't wait for the whole show!

I would have watched for Sara Rue alone.

Tim and Daisy are all right. It's the Brian that is irredeemably awful. No one can replicate Mark Heap's gaunt, wired, twitchy haunted genius.

This was the McG remake, right? Edgar, Simon, and Jessica were quite outspoken about the remake and I totally loved them for it.

Posted by: monkeyhateclean at March 5, 2010 12:25 PM

whew. You had me going for a minute there.

For some reason, the relative spaciousness of the apartment and the fact that it really looked consciously quirky bothered me the most about this clip. Ok, that and lack of ticktickticktickBAM (although I'm kind of glad they didn't try to entirely replicate Brian). Anyway, it's like the sets got amped up but the characters got watered down.
