7 Pilot Season News Truths And 1 Lie: Can You Spot The Fake?

By Jodi Clager | Trade News | February 11, 2013 | Comments ()

Pilot season is upon us and plots, casting rumors, and terrible ideas are all around us! Some of the plots are generic, some are idiotic, and some are sure to look like "The Wire" compared to the drivel currently on television. So! I wanna play a game. I am going to give you some plots from the new pilot season and I am also going to make up one of my own. Your task, if you choose to accomplish it, is to find the lie among the truths. The prize? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Er, pride or something?

"Beverly Hills Cop"

Axl Foley's son is now a police officer in Beverly Hills and he's looking to get out of his father's shadow!

This comedy is set in the sexy world of a Manhatten bar and follows its single patrons as they search for love...over the course of one night!

"The Donor Party"

A man finally decides that he's ready to settle down and have kids, only to find out that he already does! His sperm donations became actual people and now belong to a widow with lesbian neighbors!

"Giving 110%"

A woman decides she's fed up with her lazy and unfocused ways and vows to get her life in order! Adding difficulty to the rather lofty goal is the lack of support from her overbearing mom, successful father, and her best friend!

Clara's life has been on a downward spiral for the last 7 years because of a strange occurrence. A stranger arrives in Clara's life to tell her that the explanation for her life's trajectory can be found in Wonderland. Of course, if Clara wants her life back then she has to defeat the Evil Queen...Alice!

"Holding Patterns"

This comedy follows friends who survive a plane crash and see their lives changed completely.

"Girlfriend in a Coma"

A woman wakes from an almost 20 year coma only to learn that she has a 17-year-old daughter from a pregnancy she didn't know about!

"Sleepy Hollow"

The world of Sleepy Hollow becomes a supernatural thriller in this series based on the famous legend.

Alright, so I double checked my casting resources. Mixology is on ABC, and I still don't see Giving 110% anywhere, so that is my answer. All the rest I can give you networks for, which is mostly a very sad thing.

  • Ash

Please tell me you made up all of these.

  • The Donor Party has to be fake. There is no way a pun like that made it out of the 1st draft.

  • Comfy

Are you sure you didn't mean "Donner Party"? Walking Dead in the mountains...

  • Buck Forty

Mixology, because you said it was a comedy ergo it's a 22 minute sitcom, and you can't have a new cast each week hooking up within 22 minutes. Audiences want to know the characters in a sitcom ie they must be there every week and I doubt viewers would stand for a core cast of bar patrons. (The blurb doesn't mention the staff, so I've presumed it's about the punters)

  • big dipper

For all of you guessing Girlfriend in a Coma, it's real. And Christina Ricci is in talks to star. Which ruined my day as a holdover Ricci fan from my youth.

  • Joe

I'm going to go with “Giving 110%” - the other ones all sound so stupid that sadly they have to be true, but this one seems plausible; hence, fake.

  • Nic Cage

    Doner Party is fake

  • Irina

    Wonderland, I hope.

  • sean

I say Holding Patterns. I already know Beverly Hills Cop and Girlfriend in a Coma are real. I think BHC has already been cast, and filmed their pilot.

Holding Patterns seemed too much like a show I would actually want, so it's definitely fake.

  • thebluestepside

    I say 110%.

  • annoyingmouse

They're all lies, right? That's the joke? I'm full of pride, now.

  • Ted Zancha

I'm going with Holding Patterns. Compared to the rest, it almost sounds normal or possible. So it's obviously a fabrication.

  • Bert_McGurt

I want to say you've made up "The Donor Party" only because I think the pun in the title is giving WAAAY too much credit to the historical knowledge of the average Two and a Half Men-watching demographic.

  • Leroy Grey

Trick question! "Donor Party" is a studio remake of some French comedy starring Vince Vaughn!

  • Arran

It's obviously Mixology, since there's no such place as Manhatten.

  • David Sorenson

No. It's because it's described as a comedy where something like that would wind up as a reality show on either Spike or TruTV.

  • JeanUK

Mixology or Girlfiriend in a Coma.
May I just say some of the titles are the worst and least imaginative.

  • Yocean

"Girl Friend in Comma" sound like a televised sequel to Almodovar's "Talk to Her." I call fake. I mean dear god I hope it's fake!

  • Marc

"Girlfriend in a Comma", taking you inside the sassy shenanigans of a new intern at the Oxford Dictionaries office. Watch the sparks fly between her and her stuffy boss! Thrill as she tries to maintain relevancy against Wikipedia! "Girlfriend in a Comma"! (n) 1. The new definition of laughter!

  • David Sorenson

I'm stealing this and pitching it to TLC. So long, chumps!!

  • Sara_Tonin00

I vote Mixology, though if you remove the "in one night" it could just be the new Friends/HIMYM of this decade.

  • Fredo

Dude, what's up with the website? It keeps giving me error messages about server issues whenever I try to load a page.

  • CRK81

Please tell me you made up Girlfriend in a Coma

  • BlackRabbit

It's happened in real life a few times. Sometimes the mom was awake when the babymaking happened. Sometimes....not. Ick.

  • Caleb_Hobbledehoy

Isn't 'Girlfriend in a Coma' based on the Douglas Coupland novel of the same name? That novel hit hard for me. I was so enamored with the characters I held off finishing the novel for over a year.

  • zeke_the_pig

I decided to skim over and actually not read any of the potential shows, so I think, in the big picture, I'm the real winner here.

  • lowercase_ryan

I vote Mixology, cause 1 night? wtf?

  • Mrs. Julien

Or it's Love Boat in a bar. Depending on the bar, it could be Fantasy Island.

  • Fabius_Maximus

If the concept would be "Fantasy Bar", that could actually work.

  • janetfaust

I don't want any of these to be real. Not sure if I'm just extra grumpy or if all of these ideas really do blow.

  • Kballs

    Wait, she was in a coma for 20 years . . . 17 year old daughter . . . eww.

  • Andrew J Moore

That's how most of those "and then she slept until a 'kiss' from a charming prince" legends actually go.

  • BWeaves

    True and icky.

And I just googled this TV show. ICK!

  • "My name is Buck... and I came here to F**k"

  • csb

Almost 20 years... but still, yeah.

  • KatSings

Giving 110% and Mixology are the only ones I haven't heard about.
