The Screen Actor’s Guild Award Nominations were announced this morning, and unlike the Golden Globes, these really mean something because these are voted on by other actors, and obviously, other actors know what’s best. And by, what’s best, I mean: “Hot in Cleveland.”

That’s right. “Community” (and “Raising Hope”) was snubbed here, too, in favor of “Hot in Cleveland.” Betty White even got a nod for supporting actress, which is sweet but completely absurd. I love Betty White. I really do. But she has two gears: Nice old lady and nice old lady with a dirty mouth.

However, True Grit at least got a couple of noms, for Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, while Hilary Swank also sneaked in the best actress category and Robert Duvall deservedly got a nom for Get Low. But save for the embarrassments of Burlesque and The Tourist, the nominations here look similar to the Globes.

Huh. Don't the SAG Awards have a category for "Best Ensemble Cast"? I seem to remember the casts of Seinfeld, Friends, and Everybody Loves Raymond winning that when I gave a damn about awards shows. If that category still exists, and Community wasn't nominated for it, then God wants me to kick puppies, punch kitties, and poke Betty White in the eye.

(Sorry. The Best Picture and Best Series awards are for casts. I've updated the post to better reflect that. -- DR

WTF is Hot in Cleveland? I've never even heard of it.

How long can The Office coast on the good-will created by long gone episodes? The only show that MIGHT have a better ensemble cast than Community is Modern Family.
(Since I'm nerdboying right now, I'll toss in Better Off Ted as another example of a ridiculously good cast that needed so much more love.)

Well, God damn it. This is why I try not to care.

But they always pull me back in...

That is rather surprising that Community didn't get a nom.

I think Inception should have been up for best ensemble. That was kind of a strange cast that worked damn well together. Shutter Island as well. Hmmm...both DiCaprio movies.

Still pretty ho-hum and predictable/boring. At least John Hawkes gets some love. But Community and Parks & Rec getting skipped in favor of the oldies is ridiculous. Also skipping over Olyphant and Walton Goggins on Justified, and MLP for Weeds is a head scratcher. In the end, I will continue to not care much about award shows.

And I second, what the hell is Hot in Cleveland?

John Hawkes!

True Grit ughhh! I can’t get that annoying voice out of my head. I don’t know which voice is more grating, Bale’s “Dark Knight” or this fucking Rooster Cogburn guy.

I watch a lot of teevee, but I can honestly say I haven’t watched a full episode of any of the shows nominated by SAG.

I’m not a big fan of SAG, it goes back to the way that they treated Tyler Perry.

One of the first things that got me so excited about Inception was the ensemble... big snub. Unfortunately, I think Shutter Island just came out at a weird time and that hurt the chances for anything. Maybe Leo is just too consistently good and he cancels himself out.

As far as TV goes, Parenthood and Friday Night Lights... you just don't get any better than those casts.

I haven’t gotten to the theater that much this year, but I’ll definitely weigh in on the amazing television that’s on right now.

Best Performance by an Ensemble, TV Drama
Mad Men. Bonus points for pulling people from Whedon’s cancelled shows (and not killing them).

Best Actor, TV Drama
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad. In his own way, Walt is more terrifying than Dexter, more loveable/despicable than Don Draper, smarter than Dr. House, and more pathetic than Steve Buscemi. This is largely due to amazing writing and my own obsession with the show, but Cranston is the only person I could see pulling it all off.

Best Actress, TV Drama
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to follow the dramas as closely as I’d like (even Mad Men *slaps wrist*). But if Kyra can help me cheat in 5 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, she can help me cheat in the SAG awards. Don’t question my logic. It is not your human logic. Mine’s much more advanced.

Best Performance by an Ensemble, TV Comedy
Modern Family. 30 Rock is a close second, and I don’t mind if they win, but they’re not quite as amazing as they’ve been in the past, and MF really pulls it together. Not only are they hilarious, but they really feel like a family. However, we all know it’s Community. Seriously, SAG? Seriously?

Best Actress, TV Comedy
Betty White. We really do love her. It was hordes of our people who brought her back to TV, and we know in our hearts that we won’t have her for much longer. Make her comfortable, make her happy. Hollywood is her Hospice, and awards are her palliative care.

Best Actor, TV Comedy
Ty Burrell. It’s not that I don’t love the rest of them, but Mr. Burrell is the only one who comes close to actually acting (did you know that Chris Colfer is gay in real life?!). He came into our lives as the poor man’s Bruce Campbell in Dawn of the Dead, but he has since risen to greatness in our living rooms, restoring the balance, returning Bruce Campbell to his post as the poor man’s Bruce Campbell.

"Hot in Cleveland" is a crappy show on TV Land with Betty, Jane Leeves, Valerie Bertinelli, and Wendie Malick (taking a break from the Help the Hurt Animals ads I can't bear to watch). According to IMDB three of the women are vapid. As women are. And stuck in Cleveland with a snarky caretaker. I don't know what any of that means. I've just put more thought into that show than it deserves.

Dear ShagEaredVillain,

Your comments on Ty Burrel are wonderfully cromulent and you've embiggened my soul today. Can we bee friends?

Posted by: RobP at December 16, 2010 11:18 AM

Regarding ShagEaredVillain's words on Bruce Campbell... oh no you didn't!

Posted by: elizabeth at December 16, 2010 11:19 AM

Gah. It's like Community doesn't even exist!

Posted by: noonoo at December 16, 2010 3:19 PM

No "Community" SAG? Really? Are you sure you want us to think guilds are this moronic? Really SAG? Really?

Posted by: John at December 16, 2010 4:25 PM

Seconded to "it's like Community doesn't even exist."

Seriously, it's just baffling. Every few years, an awesome new show or two comes along that, regardless of personal tastes, definitely has a few things going for it that you'd expect award seasons to recognize, and they just gets utterly and completely and totally ignored. I do not understand this.

Posted by: dsbs at December 16, 2010 6:02 PM

Community and Justified must not play any political whoring games to get their show properly considered by any voters. I can't allow myself to believe that any respectable voting panel could actually SEE the best episodes from each of those shows and not nominate them.

That being said, thank fuck John Hawkes finally got something. I personally thought he was ten times better than Jennifer Lawrence (who was great, don't get me wrong), and yet all the attention seems to be on her. Never made much sense to me, outside of people being blown away by a strong female performance/character because they are all too rare.
