All Your Favorite TV Shows Will Be Canceled

Because God Hates You / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | April 20, 2009 | Comments (71)

The Hollywood Reporter, this morning, does a fairly extensive overview of all the network shows that are on the bubble — that haven’t been picked up for another season, but have not yet been canceled, either. For fans of certain shows, it’s a depressing list.

Here’s the quick and dirty: Over on CBS, “Without a Trace,” “Cold Case,” “The Eleventh Hour,” “Numbers” and “The Unit” are on the bubble. Odds are good that “Numbers” will return, it’s 50/50 on “Without a Trace” and “Cold Case” (one will probably return, but not the other), “The Eleventh Hour” is staring down the barrel of cancellation, and perhaps most depressing, “The Unit” is “unlikely” to return for a fifth season, which is fucking painful, as it is consistently one of the best dramas on television, and it’s found a really nice groove this season, the new opening theme song notwithstanding. The one bit of good news, however, is that CBS has asked exec-producer Shawn Ryan for a list of ideas for next season.

Over on NBC, with Jay Leno scooping up five of the hourlong slots next season (please let it be canceled after one year), the hour-long slots are harder to come by. “Heroes” has already been picked up (inexplicably), while “Chuck” doesn’t look particularly good for renewal (damnit!). “Medium” is also iffy, but has a better shot than “Chuck,” and … this hurts … “Life” is all but canceled, as is “Kath and Kim.” Why you gotta kill “Life,” people? Or “Chuck”? You nasty, quality-hating motherfuckers. Take away “Chuck,” “Life,” and “The Unit,” and I barely have anything left to watch next year. The good news: “Southland” will probably be back, and it’s a solid cop show, so far.

My hope: Jay Leno gets canceled by November and replaced with hour-long episodes of Yvonne Strahovski eating sandwiches.

Moving on: At ABC, “Cupid” is all but dead, while “Better of Ted,” “The Unusuals” and “Castle” are all iffy. I can’t see them canceling “Castle,” as it’s performed fairly well in the ratings, and I’d hate to see “Better of Ted,” go because it’s become one of the best comedies on television, after just four eps. And I’d really like to see “The Unusuals” stick around to fill the void in my heart left by the impending cancellation of “Life.”

At Fox: My apologies, but I incorrectly reported last week that “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” had been officially canceled. Clearly, my brain made that up for me, though renewal seems extremely unlikely. However, surprisingly, THR says that “Dollhouse’s” renewal odds are at 50/50, which seems kind of high.

Finally, on the CW: “Reaper” is kaput.

Take "Chuck" and I will cut you, people. I will find you and cut you.

Posted by: dammitjanet at April 20, 2009 10:55 AM

I need Life and The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The rest of them may be sacrificed at will.

Posted by: Cindy at April 20, 2009 11:05 AM

I am in denial about the cancellation of "Life" because I want desperately to believe they wouldn't take away one of the few shows I watch. And what's up with keeping "Heroes" and losing "Chuck"?? That makes no sense at all.

Posted by: Reba at April 20, 2009 11:09 AM

Bones? Anybody? Bones?

Don't report about frickin Without a Trace and neglect Bones, people. *sigh*

Posted by: Kate at April 20, 2009 11:11 AM

I may be in the minority here, but Reaper was funny, interesting and consistently employed members of The State-I'm sorry to see it go. Hey, but thanks CW for keeping the new 90210 and whiny emo Superman you bastards.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at April 20, 2009 11:14 AM

damn ive just started getting in to chuck. its pretty much a similar proposition to reaper chain store working schlub gets a job for a)the devil or b)the government then forms a three person team and hijinks ensues. Chuck seems to have come through this year in ways Reaper hasn't.

I never understand why networks seems to bang on about wanting people waching their shows in new and exciting ways and then they only look at on the night figures. I know their business model is heavily advertising orientated but surely most shows make a large proportion of their budget back on DVD sales and sales to international markets.

Ahh well time to invest my hopes in something else.

Posted by: jim of the lower case at April 20, 2009 11:16 AM

Come on, ABC - you redeemed yourselves by giving Scrubs a proper final season! (even though you won't let The Todd appear in a banana hammock - c'est la vie)... Keep it up and keep Better Off Ted, it's fantastic!

Posted by: Tammy at April 20, 2009 11:16 AM

I've never watched Kath and Kim because I've already had a migraine and it wasn't that enjoyable.

Posted by: Heathen at April 20, 2009 11:18 AM

Alan Sepinwall wrote up a letter to NBC today to try and save Chuck. If the dude can save The Wire, maybe NBC will be smart enough...

Oh. Right. The Leno people.

Mrcreosote, I adore Reaper. I'm really sad about the news, but totally not surprised. Everything I love dies...Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Pushing Daisies, my swamp assy yet adorable Shih Tzu. So it goes.

Posted by: Julie at April 20, 2009 11:25 AM

If Chuck is cancelled for that overly chinned asshat Leno, I feel a road trip coming on.

As much as I love T:TSCC, I'm not that optimistic about next season. The finale did kick some major ass though. I'd love another season to see where the hell all of this is going.

Posted by: Melody at April 20, 2009 11:33 AM

NOOOOOO!!!!

*starts a collection for the Church of Chuck*

Stupid Jay Leno... Why you gotta ruin my Chuck chances? And how can anyone stand Medium? Don't they have Ghost Whisperer to fill that spot but with giant boobs?

I hate you all.

Of course if Chuck is canceled there's a good chance Zachary Levi will be looking for pity screws so...

Posted by: Kayanne at April 20, 2009 11:36 AM

I'm positive that Jay Leno is probably one of the most hilarious people on the planet. Unfortunately, anything funny gets sucked into the gravitational pull around his chin and never reaches our ears. It is the burden he bears.

Posted by: jM at April 20, 2009 11:48 AM

I enjoy Chuck when I watch it but it's up against How I Met Your Mother. And really it can't compare to NPH and Jason Segel and Willow. I don't know if you've been watching but the whole "Barney and Robin" thing has gotten so real. And it gave Neil the opportunity to put on an acting clinic last week as he was struggling with telling Marshall.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at April 20, 2009 11:49 AM

Dammit. I would like to have seen "Reaper" stay alive and keep getting a little darker. Thanks, CW. Just keep riding that 90210. All the way into the ground, cocksuckers.

Posted by: Sean at April 20, 2009 11:50 AM

Rhyme how dare you suggest Chuck should burn. One of the shows could move nights or you could get a DVR.

If Chuck dies I'm sending you to the annals of TV Hell with it!

Posted by: Kayanne at April 20, 2009 12:03 PM

The FUCK?!?! Cancel "Life"? How dare the evil peacock (heavy on the "cock") network threaten my viewings of the ginger hotness that is Damian Lewis? Screw Leno and his 10pm timeslot.

Posted by: greer at April 20, 2009 12:04 PM

What? Reaper? Seriously? Fucking god dammit. I like Reaper. Fuck.

Posted by: Lucas at April 20, 2009 12:04 PM

I thought the same thing, Optimus. As much as I like Chuck, I would turn it down for How I met Your Mother.

I would be disappointed to see Cold Case go. It's a clever premise and all the other cop shows are the same to me.

Posted by: Brie at April 20, 2009 12:06 PM

Man, I like a lot of those shows - Chuck, Reaper, Life. Better Off Ted is freakin' hilarious.

I guess the nets have pretty much decided to cede quality drama to TNT and USA and the premium channels, of course. In the next few years, the only thing on broadcast will be endless variations of singing contests, dancing contests and "dating" contests.

I never got into most of the cop/procedural shows. Cold Case is like a music video, every time I've ever seen it, they were doing the music playing over a montage thing. Have never seen Without a Trace, as far as I know. Never seen The Unit, either.

Posted by: Slash at April 20, 2009 12:12 PM

MrcreosoteI may be in the minority here, but Reaper was funny, interesting and consistently employed members of The State-I'm sorry to see it go.

I'll join that minority. I've enjoyed Reaper too. It's the only reason to keep the CW on my list of active channels.

I think that they need more reasons to get Ben out of his clothes. You'd think having a demon girlfriend would do it, but no.

Posted by: Drake at April 20, 2009 12:15 PM

I also choose How I Met Your Mother over Chuck. NPH is just awesome. But I DVR Chuck and watch it right after. Getting rid of Chuck and Dollhouse would be at least 1/4 of my whole tv watching. And those two shows have been reliably good lately while Big Bang Theory and South Park have been hit and miss.

Posted by: Dave at April 20, 2009 12:16 PM

Damn... and I was just starting to actually watch Reaper and not just use it for background noise.

Posted by: the other kafka at April 20, 2009 12:30 PM

GodtopusDAMMIT. If Chuck goes, I will need to borrow the MurderTank.

True story: the dude who plays Chuck went to high school down the street from my grandparents house.

I'm sticking my fingers in my ears regarding any HIMYM spoilers. I am a season behind, and I can't wait to catch up. I wish I could find it online somewhere. :( Does iTunes have it?

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 20, 2009 12:33 PM

My hope: Jay Leno gets canceled by November and replaced with hour-long episodes of Yvonne Strahovski eating sandwiches.

Can we replace sandwiches with ice cream cones? I'll buy the dvd's of that show.

Posted by: Bistro at April 20, 2009 12:41 PM

Hah, you fuckers think you can hurt me? You're wrong, my favorite show is going away next year (Lost), and my other favorite show (South Park) will never be cancelled, unless Viacom is way dumber than they seem!

But they still hurt me anyway... WHY THE FUCK DOES FUCKING HEROES GET ANOTHER FUCKING SEASON!?!

Posted by: George at April 20, 2009 12:51 PM

Dustin! My heart was broken all weekend over Terminator after that season finale, but I was just getting over it, and moving on. Now you're giving me hope, just to dash it against the rocks all over again. You sick, twisted bastard.

I bet the CW brings back "Pussycat Dolls: Who Cares Who Wins, As Long As We Flash the Ladybits."

Posted by: Captain Steve at April 20, 2009 12:52 PM

Dammit, I liked Reaper. As for Chuck. Meh. I saw it once on a cross-country flight. The only enjoyable part was John Larroquette guest starring as world-renowned master of seduction.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at April 20, 2009 12:54 PM

Oh, sweet! I don't watch any of these.

Gotta pick the winners, people. Not the weiners.

How the fuck is Heroes still on, anyways? That is beyond baffling.

Posted by: figgy at April 20, 2009 12:56 PM

Chuck, Life, Better off Ted, Dollhouse and TSCC? You're kidding me, right? Is there anything else on TV? Is it possible to hack into the Nielsen database and find out which fuckers are watching "According to Jim" and y'know...send a squad comprised of Sarah Connor, Echo, Sarah (from Chuck), Danni Reese and Veronica to do very bad things to them? Then we can tape it and watch it on repeat. Mmmm...happy thoughts

Posted by: Joker at April 20, 2009 1:02 PM

Chuck, The Unit, Better Off Ted, The Unusuals... all likely gone while Jay Leno's miserable, shit-eating grin gets 5 hours of prime time every week.
Oh, well... I've all but sworn off network television already, this just makes it that much easier.

Posted by: Spender at April 20, 2009 1:09 PM

The loss of Life hurts me badly. Why do they have to do this bullshit to me, anyway? I finally find some good TV and they take it away from me. I've been good to you, TV! I've stuck by you through all the reality tv and the writer's strike and everything. I thought maybe I'd earned something, a little respect maybe.

But noooooooo none of that is good enough for you, is it, TV?

Fuck you. Just... Fuck you.

Posted by: chenry at April 20, 2009 1:26 PM

I think Chuck is pretty lame, but since so many of you enjoy it, I'll offer my condolences.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at April 20, 2009 1:26 PM

Ahem. Pajiba's in Charge? Can the Murdertank be, like, rented or borrowed for a few days? I will replenish the diesel fuel and have it back to Pajiba HQ in...a few days.

Just gotta run some errands is all.

Posted by: greer at April 20, 2009 1:38 PM

Of course if Chuck is canceled there's a good chance Zachary Levi will be looking for pity screws so...

I think you've found the only possible silver lining in that scenario, Kayanne!

But as nice as that'd be, I hope "Chuck" will get a last-minute reprieve.

Posted by: Melissa at April 20, 2009 1:45 PM

Who makes the schedule over at NBC? Do they use Pat Sajak's wheel or the dart board at Dublin's after 50 cent draft night?

Look geniuses. Of course, "Life" is NEVER going to get huge ratings on Wed!!!!
Ever heard of some little shows called American "Freakin" Idol and Lost?!?
Who's left to watch "Chuck" with dumbass Steve-O dancing on one channel and
the greatness of BBT and HIMYM on the other?

All we can hope is that NBC has one remaining brain cell and temporarily
moves these shows to little sis network USA so they can get called back up to
the big leagues once the Leno experiment tanks. Either that or we unleash
Beatrix Kiddo and her Hattori Honzo sword on their programming
departmment.

Posted by: swingdude at April 20, 2009 1:54 PM

But I DVR Chuck and watch it right after. And this is where you fail, Dave. *sigh* Clearly, HIMYM isn't going any where. Watch Chuck live and then HIMYM, at the very least do this for next week's season finale. Pleeeeease, I'm begging you.

*sobs*

Posted by: Kayanne at April 20, 2009 2:02 PM

Although the Hollywood Reporter is saying Reaper is dead, early reports declared a premature death for the show last year too. There has been no official word from the CW yet, and they will never know you want the show to stay if you don't tell them.

All info here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/37449.html

Posted by: ReaperDMV at April 20, 2009 2:09 PM

I fucking hate Leno and NBC for ruining television for the 09-10 season. I hope they all burn in hell.

Posted by: Grace at April 20, 2009 2:13 PM

I agree w/Cindy - Life and Terminator:TSCC are the main shows I give a shit about since the end of BSG (Reaper and Chuck are ok, but I wouldn't miss them as much). I'm w/Grace - I hope all of the drones at Fox and NBC burn.

Posted by: Soup Sandwich at April 20, 2009 2:24 PM

The Leno thing won't really affect me because anything on at 10pm gets DVR'd so besides getting blasted with annoying ass ads during the Thursday shows I won't really notice it. Part of the joy of going to work well before the sun comes up. Still the idea that Leno will be on every night does make me weep for mankind a bit. But if Chuck gets cancelled the only night I'll be watching the channel is Thursday, anyway. I just don't get who the Leno nightly thing is aimed at. Maybe it's just that I really don't go for talk shows but this seems like the worst idea NBC has had since Coupling.

Posted by: TylerDFC at April 20, 2009 2:25 PM

No Reaper? Aw, that just blows. Does that mean they have to give the slot to one of those vapid asshats from the Hills?

this sucks. SUCKS.

Posted by: ponch at April 20, 2009 2:31 PM

I've been watching life since the first season, primarily becuase of my man love for Damien Lewis. I just yesterday watched the season 2 finale, and it was some damn fine TV. I'm terribly sad that there won't be a season 3.

Posted by: chad at April 20, 2009 3:00 PM

My hope: Jay Leno gets canceled by November and replaced with hour-long episodes of Yvonne Strahovski eating sandwiches.

Can she share with Damien Lewis and Sarah Shahi?

Every single fucking time I have to hear about that punk ass bitch Jay Leno getting 5 hours of prime time, I want to take hostages. There are no words for how wrong that is.

I also want to say some kind words for Medium, which still manages some really creepy moments while being the only show I can think of that shows actual real family life with laundry, toothbrushing, crazy breakfasts and a lead female with curves.

Posted by: Louise at April 20, 2009 3:19 PM

Jay Leno five nights a week is inexcusable. No two ways about it. If Jay Leno costs me my Yvonne Strahovski I think I may need to go on suicide watch.

Ugh. Life.

Posted by: DemonWaterPolo at April 20, 2009 3:56 PM

Louise I'm with you on Medium. The show is a realistic portatriat of the struggle of a normal family which is greatly in contrast with the all premise of the show itself. ghost wisper is a cheasy piece of crap, "are you afraid of the dark?" is way scarier. medium gets to be actually creepy and enjoyable, even if as many of this show you see where they are going always before the actual medium does! but the good thing is that the show isn't about that, like most "investigative" show are.
and I just spent way too much talking about medium. The TSCC finale was insanely great. Rupert Murdoch i'm on your ass, fuck this up and I will cut you open, right on your male boob.

Posted by: rio at April 20, 2009 4:08 PM

Good point Kayanne. I didn't realize Chuck was in trouble until today. I'll give it my support live and watch HIMYM after.

Posted by: Davd at April 20, 2009 4:28 PM

No more Reaper?

To quote Anakin when he learned about Padme's death: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Posted by: Eric at April 20, 2009 4:54 PM

I think the networks are really trying to push me over the fence about canceling my cable.

Posted by: DoubleH at April 20, 2009 5:05 PM

I'll third (or whatever) the motion for Medium. I still like it. I love that family, every blonde one of them. My only frustration: why does nobody listen to Alison at first? She's almost always right. I wish my mom had had prophetic dreams. How awesome would that be? "No, don't buy that house... it's gonna be worth half of what they're asking two years from now. Also, dump any AIG stock you might have. Just trust me."

Posted by: Slash at April 20, 2009 5:06 PM

I love Life, hate NBC. Jay Leno? PleZzzzzz!

I love the family in Medium also, that's why I watch, the whole second sight shit is secondary.

Posted by: allheavens at April 20, 2009 5:20 PM

So let's see:

BSG - Gone.
Life - Cancelled, it appears.
Terminator - Cancelled, everyone says.
House - has gone down the tubes BIG TIME this season.
Family Guy - sadly has become a parody of itself.

That leaves only HIMYM (which at some point has to introduce the titular "Mother" -- I vote for Danzig's song to be her theme song), Supernatural (which will be in its final season according to the show's creator) and 24 (which will go forever on because this universe just cannot kill Jack Bauer. IF there's a way around death, he will motherfuckin' find it and fast!! NOW WHERE ARE THE LAUNCH CODES?!!!) on my viewing radar.

Oh and The Daily Show/Colbert Report nightly two-fer. But that goes without saying.

Wait...why am I paying for TV again?

Posted by: Fredo at April 20, 2009 9:40 PM

I forgot ABC was a network.

And, hey, I didn't see "America's Next Top Model" on the cancellation list, or even on the bubble. High five you guys, right?! Right? Hello?

Posted by: puregonzo at April 20, 2009 10:27 PM

Oh, wow. I've only ever seen one of these shows before. I'm sorry, don't smite.

It was Better off Ted, which I only saw for the first time yesterday. I really like it, I hope they keep it around. But for the love of the Light Brigade, who keeps hiring Andrea Anders: Licensed Show-Killer? HAZMAT suits notwithstanding, every show she's ever been on comes to a grinding halt she enters frame. I could menstruate something more charismatic.

Posted by: Jo 'Mama' Besser at April 20, 2009 10:41 PM

This is why I don't watch much television.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at April 20, 2009 11:03 PM

if this means that zachary levy will stop getting forced/asked to do things like the NBC's thanksgiving parade and NYE Times Square coverage pretending to be famous I'm all for it. Dude makes me want to up-Chuck, and not in a good way.

Posted by: lennyx at April 21, 2009 12:11 AM

Love Chuck. It's always good for a giggle...it's so unabashedly silly and making fun of things, I can't help but think the writers are doing their part to right all the evils of the world. I love seeing CHevy Chase acting "the evil dude" (he always seemed kind of a smarmy bastard anyway). Enjoyed tonight's episode with Chuck getting told to stay in the car, he gets out and complains he's got the spy thing down and yeah, Agent Casey puts a gun in his ear and says, "you were saying, Agent Imbecile?". Great line, great delivery, great timing. I hope they don't cancel it. It's good fun that doesn't take itself seriously at all. How can you not like it?

Posted by: c at April 21, 2009 12:41 AM

and I love that whathisname from Arrested Development is on it too...

Posted by: c at April 21, 2009 12:57 AM

I'll be sad to see Life and Chuck go. They were a few of the rare "taste overlaps" for me and my 14 year old son. It was a fine way to get the boy out of his attic bachelor pad for an hour.

Posted by: Stacy D at April 21, 2009 9:30 AM

Not a single good show in the bunch. Wouldn't mind if the networks all went completely under. Boring shows, Poorly written, Dumb premises, Bad acting.

Posted by: Hurricane at April 21, 2009 10:48 AM

Well, then yay for you!

Posted by: Stacy D at April 21, 2009 2:06 PM

Well, I love Chuck...it's funny, gots pretty ladies and is lighthearted, I don't know why it would get cancelled...I have been on tons of threads and forums that do nothing but support it...it seems like it would be easier to just build off a good show than come up with something new and crappy..I will really miss TSCC..I know everyone else says its gone but I am hoping for a miracle...As far as Dollhouse I have seen every episode and still am not a huge fan...the only thing I have every ever really liked or loved from Whedon is Firefly and Serenity...other than that Buffy and Angel were crap...Medium is good, Better Off Ted is hilarious as funny as 30 Rock, The Unit is good but I missed lotsa episodes because of time overruns...Jay Leno and Southland can suck it...

Posted by: El General at April 21, 2009 3:34 PM

Chuck and Reaper can't get canceled. How can they even consider that?

Posted by: Ricardo at April 21, 2009 4:46 PM

“The Sarah Connor Chronicles” sucked

Love live Doll House the most interesting show this year.

Posted by: Jeff Little at April 21, 2009 9:43 PM

Heroes is my guilty pleasure. dunno why. but it is. yeah, whatever. but I have actually seen the others because of Tivo, and frankly I am pissed. seems that all the networks do is build us up with originality only to drop us on our duffs to look at shitty reality shows that focus on nothing reality related! you know what? I am down for a massive effort to save some shit! petitions, peanuts sent, whatever. let's do the damn thing!

Posted by: BassMan54 at April 22, 2009 2:04 AM

Well I am a huge fan of The Sarah Connor Chronicles I think it was well written and one of the best shows on TV...unfortunately Dollhouse isn't living up to any expectations...the only thing positive about it is Eliza Dushku cause she's super hot...other than that it's a huge letdown...Chuck and Better Off Ted are absolutely great...

Posted by: Syberwolf at April 22, 2009 9:51 AM

“Without a Trace,” “Cold Case,” - I’m quite surprised about these two as don’t they generally do well in the ratings?

I haven’t watched WaT in a while…stopped watching the Season after Roselyn Sanchez joined and they started focusing a lot on the characters private lives.

‘I guess the nets have pretty much decided to cede quality drama to TNT and USA and the premium channels, of course.’ Agreed with you Slash…the best drama is on cable.

If I were a producer with an idea that wasn’t a police/medical drama, I wouldn’t even go to the mainstream channels. I would pitch my idea to the cable networks.

Posted by: Neena at April 23, 2009 5:30 AM

keep Chuck
keep Heroes
keep Conan O'Brien

cancel everything else in NBC because outside those three, they suck

Posted by: choy at April 25, 2009 2:22 AM

I give up. I'm just gonna throw out my TV its not like I'm going to have to watch this fall. I guess I'll go read a book.

Posted by: crazybetty at April 28, 2009 9:14 PM

Jay Leno - $250+ per guest appearance plus whatever's in Jay's contract, a few techies, a couple of producers and a couple more writers. Total cost . . . just not that much.

The Unit, Without A Trace, Chuck, Life, etc. - all ensemble casts with ever increasing contract values, high caliber writers, multiple producers, lots of special effects and different locations, etc. etc. etc. Total cost . . . well, you get the idea.

These shows, especially the NBC casualties but the others as well, aren't being canceled because the aren't great shows or even because they don't do well in the ratings, it's because they simply cost more than the networks are willing to pay. That's what keeps the reality shows and primetime game shows going and it is definately why Leno is hitting that 10 o'clock, 9 Central time slot.

Oh, but wait, what about Gossip Girl, 90210 and the upcoming reprise of Melrose Place, you might ask? Well, don't bother - devastatingly beautiful (men as well as women) twenty somethings paid to act like teenagers who jump in and out of each others beds every week is simply money making magic. Sex sells. Period.

One last point and my rant is over - the reason why According to Jim is still on in spite of the fact that it regularly loses the ratings race is because ABC doesn't have another family oriented comedy to replace it with . . at all. They are the Disney owned chanel and they DON'T HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE!? I feel certain that if they ever came up with an acceptable, funny, family half hour comedy they'd sink Jim in a New York Nano-Second.

- PEACE -

Please don't cancel The Unit it is one of the best shows on tv if it had a better time slot then it would do so much better, it the one show my husband and I can watch together. I really hope that they choose to keep it.
