Emmy Nominations / Seth Freilich

Trade News | July 16, 2009 | Comments (64)

Well, the Emmy nominations are out and if you haven’t already seen ‘em, let’ go through the ones we care about (art direction, schmart direction). I’m always intrigued by the Outstanding Guest categories, which are a bizarre mix of legit nominations and sucking up to celebs although, this year, they seem to be more legit and less suckey-upey:

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series
30 Rock (Gavin Volure) · Steve Martin, as Gavin Volure
30 Rock (The Bubble) · Jon Hamm, as Dr. Drew Baird
30 Rock (Mamma Mia) · Alan Alda, as Milton Greene
Desperate Housewives (The Best Thing That Ever Could Have Happened) · Beau Bridges, as Eli Boggs
Saturday Night Live (Host: Justin Timberlake) · Justin Timberlake, as Various Characters

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series
CSI: NY (Yahrzeit) · Edward Asner, as Abraham Klein
Damages (They Had to Tweeze That Out of My Kidney) · Ted Danson, as Arthur Frobisher
Dexter (Go Your Own Way) · Jimmy Smits, as Miguel Prado
ER (And In The End) · Ernest Borgnine, as Paul Manning
Rescue Me (Sheila) · Michael J. Fox, as Dwight

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series
30 Rock (The One With The Cast Of ‘Night Court’) · Jennifer Aniston, as Claire
30 Rock (Christmas Special) · Elaine Stritch, as Colleen Donaghy
Monk (Mr. Monk And The Lady Next Door) · Gena Rowlands, as Marge
My Name Is Earl (Witch Lady) · Betty White, as Crazy Witch Lady
Saturday Night Live (Presidential Bash 2008) · Tina Fey, as Governor Sarah Palin (Spoof)
The Big Bang Theory (The Maternal Capacitance) · Christine Baranski, as Beverly Hofstadter

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series
Grey’s Anatomy (No Good At Saying Sorry (One More Chance)) · Sharon Lawrence, as Robbie Stevens
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Swing) · Ellen Burstyn, as Bernadette Stabler
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Persona) · Brenda Blethyn, as Linnie Malcolm/Caroline Cantwell
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Ballerina) · Carol Burnett, as Bridget “Birdie” Sulloway
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (The Boy With The African Heart) · CCH Pounder, as Mrs. Curtin

See, those really aren’t too bad. I must admit that I am a little flummoxed, however, on how Jimmy Smits was a “guest actor” when he was kinda one of the stars of “Dexter” last season.

Here are the three supporting actor categories:

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series
30 Rock · Tracy Morgan, as Tracy Jordan
30 Rock · Jack McBrayer, as Kenneth Parcell
Entourage · Kevin Dillon, as Johnny Drama
How I Met Your Mother · Neil Patrick Harris, as Barney Stinson
The Office · Rainn Wilson, as Dwight Schrute
Two And A Half Men · Jon Cryer, as Alan Harper

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series
Boston Legal · William Shatner, as Denny Crane
Boston Legal · Christian Clemenson, as Jerry Espenson
Breaking Bad · Aaron Paul, as Jesse Pinkman
Damages · William Hurt, as Daniel Purcell
Lost · Michael Emerson, as Ben Linus
Mad Men · John Slattery, as Roger Sterling

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie
Grey Gardens · Ken Howard, as Phelan Beale
Into The Storm · Len Cariou, as Franklin D. Roosevelt
Little Dorrit · Tom Courtenay, as Mr. Dorrit
Little Dorrit · Andy Serkis, as Rigaud
The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice · Bob Newhart, as Judson

Fuck you Jon Cryer, and holla at your boy, Jack McBrayer, NPH and Rainn Wilson. I love just about all of the Drama nominations. Aaron Paul should win as he was fucking fantastic last season, but I suspect the Shat’s getting the gold. And I kinda have nothing to say on the Miniseries/Movie front. So let’s talk women:

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series
30 Rock · Jane Krakowski, as Jenna Maroney
Pushing Daisies · Kristin Chenoweth, as Olive Snook
Saturday Night Live · Amy Poehler, as Various Characters
Saturday Night Live · Kristin Wiig, as Various Characters
Ugly Betty · Vanessa Williams, as Wilhelmina Slater
Weeds · Elizabeth Perkins, as Celia Hodes

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series
24 · Cherry Jones, as President Allison Taylor
Damages · Rose Byrne, as Ellen Parsons
Grey’s Anatomy · Sandra Oh, as Dr. Christina Yang
Grey’s Anatomy · Chandra Wilson, as Dr. Miranda Bailey
In Treatment · Dianne Wiest, as Gina
In Treatment · Hope Davis, as Mia

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Grey Gardens · Jeanne Tripplehorn, as Jackie O.
House Of Saddam · Shohreh Aghdashloo, as Sajida
Into The Storm · Janet McTeer, as Clementine Churchill
Relative Stranger · Cicely Tyson, as Pearl
The Courageous Heart Of Irena Sendler (Hallmark Hall Of Fame Presentation) · Marcia Gay Harden, as Janina

Ok, I love that “Pushing Daisies” garnered a nod for Chenoweth, but I hate that it’s the show’s only nominee, particuarly since I’d put the show itself or any of the other supporting or lead actors/actresses above her. Beyond that, the Comedy nominations are a bit meh. But I love, love, love that Hope Davis got a Drama nomination, and if she doesn’t win that category, it’s a travesty. But she won’t. And frankly, as long as it’s not Sandra Oh, I can live with any of the other gals winning. And, again, I kinda have nothing to say on the Miniseries/Movie nominations, as I haven’t seen a one of them (though three of them are floating on my DVR watch list).

For lead actors, your nominees are:

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series
30 Rock · Alec Baldwin, as Jack Donaghy
Flight Of The Conchords · Jemaine Clement, as Jemaine
Monk · Tony Shalhoub, as Adrian Monk
The Big Bang Theory · Jim Parsons, as Sheldon Cooper
The Office · Steve Carell, as Michael Scott
Two And A Half Men · Charlie Sheen, as Charlie Harper

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series
Breaking Bad · Bryan Cranston, as Walter White
Dexter · Michael C. Hall, as Dexter Morgan
House · Hugh Laurie, as Dr. Gregory House
In Treatment · Gabriel Byrne, as Paul
Mad Men · Jon Hamm, as Don Draper
The Mentalist · Simon Baker, as Patrick Jane

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie
24: Redemption · Kiefer Sutherland, as Jack Bauer
Cyrano de Bergerac (Great Performances) · Kevin Kline, as Cyrano de Bergerac
Into The Storm · Brendan Gleeson, as Winston Churchill
King Lear (Great Performances) · Sir Ian McKellen, as King Lear
Taking Chance · Kevin Bacon, as LtCol Mike Strobl
Wallander: One Step Behind · Kenneth Branagh, as Kurt Wallander

No complaints with the drama nominees, although Bryan Cranston should just beat out Gabriel Byrne, for my money — while both put on acting clinics this year, Cranston was just a bit better. The comedy nominees, meanwhile, are a fucking mess as always. No problem with Baldwin and Carell, of course, and interesting to see Jim Parsons get a nod. But Charlie Sheen and Tony Shalhoub again? Really. Can someone explain this shit to me?

My only real complaint with the miniseries/movie nominations is that there’s nobody from “Generation Kill,” and Alexander Skarsgard or James Ransone easily deserve nominations over the Kiefer and Kevin Bacon.

And for the ladies:

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series
30 Rock · Tina Fey, as Liz Lemon
Samantha Who? · Christina Applegate, as Samantha Newly
The New Adventures Of Old Christine · Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as Christine
The Sarah Silverman Program · Sarah Silverman, as Sarah Silverman
United States Of Tara · Toni Collette, as Tara Gregson
Weeds · Mary-Louise Parker, as Nancy Botwin

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series
Brothers & Sisters · Sally Field, as Nora Walker
Damages · Glenn Close, as Patty Hewes
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit · Mariska Hargitay, as Detective Olivia Benson
Mad Men · Elisabeth Moss, as Peggy Olson
Saving Grace · Holly Hunter, as Grace Hanadarko
The Closer · Kyra Sedgwick, as Brenda Leigh Johnson

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie
Accidental Friendship · Chandra Wilson, as Yvonne
Coco Chanel · Shirley MacLaine, as Coco Chanel
Grey Gardens · Drew Barrymore, as Little Edie
Grey Gardens · Jessica Lange, as Big Edie
Prayers For Bobby · Sigourney Weaver, as Mary Griffith

Love the nominations for Toni Collette and Sarah Silverman. But I suspect Comedy is again Tina Fey’s to lose. The Drama list seems underwhelming to me. Is this really the best we have? Not that any of them are bad, per se, this just feels thin. We gotta get some better parts for women on the TV, I guess. And I haven’t seen a single one of the miniseries/movies that got actress nods, so I ain’t go shit to say about that.

Speaking of which, the Made for TV Movie category is a guaranteed win for either HBO or Lifetime:

Outstanding Made For Television Movie
Coco Chanel · Lifetime
Grey Gardens · HBO
Into The Storm · HBO
Prayers For Bobby · Lifetime
Taking Chance · HBO

Only one of those I saw was “Taking Chance,” which could win because of the whole war angle, although I suspect that several of the other nominees were substantially better.

The Miniseries catgory, meanwhile, is a joke:

Outstanding Miniseries
Generation Kill · HBO
Little Dorrit · PBS

Were there no other miniseries last year? Or did everyone know that “Generation Kill” was such a slam dunk that they didn’t even bother submitting?

So here are the big two. Your nominated Comedy shows are:

Outstanding Comedy Series
30 Rock
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight Of The Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
Weeds

What’s interesting here is that three of the nominees — “Entourage,” “Family Guy” and “Weeds” — aren’t really comedy series as much as they’re former comedy series. Where “It Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Eastbound and Down?” If anything other than “30 Rock” or “The Office” wins, this category is fucked (though at least there’s no nod to “Two and a Half Men”).

The Drama category, meanwhile, is much better:

Outstanding Drama Series
Big Love · HBO
Breaking Bad · AMC
Damages · FX Networks
Dexter · Showtime
House · FOX
Lost · ABC
Mad Men · AMC

That’s a pretty solid list all around. For my money, “Breaking Bad” should win, as Season Two of that show was the single best thing on TV last year. But I could easily live with “Big Love” or “Mad Men” winning, and I wouldn’t be outrageously angry if any of the other nominees won.

So there you have it. Talk and bitch amongst yourselves.

Yay! Conchords!

I am bursting with Kiwi pride!

Best Drama...LOST. Everything else can suck it.

(Yes...I'm a whore for that show. I'm OK with that.)

Posted by: PissBoy at July 16, 2009 11:39 AM

Best. Photoshop. Ever.

Posted by: Marra at July 16, 2009 11:44 AM

Comedy is messed up, per usual. Does anyone else watch Psych? I love that show. Also, no love for Pushing Daisies? Sad. . .

Posted by: Krishna at July 16, 2009 11:44 AM

How the hell can Family Guy get an Emmy Nod for "Best Comedy Series" when it doesn't actually make anyone laugh? This confuses me...

What's even worse is that this marks the first time since The Flinstones that an animated show actually landed a Best Comedy nod. And it goes to fucking Family Guy. According to the good people are the Emmys, Family Guy > The Simpsons. This show really is fucked.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at July 16, 2009 11:46 AM

Monk again, always and forever. My GOD.

Posted by: Julie at July 16, 2009 11:46 AM

I can't believe Family Guy got a nomination. This season was rather terrible. Seth McFarlane threw a fit, bitching about how the Emmys never recognize animated offerings and I'm assuming his hissy fit got them through the door.

I did like Conchords this season, but it wasn't as smooth as the first season. Too many reoccuring plots and it just felt messy and rushed overall.

I also loved Eastbound and Down and Philaldelphia, but have rather grave worries about the next season of both, Philadelphia especially.

Posted by: Drew Morton at July 16, 2009 11:48 AM

The lack of nominations for Friday Night Lights just makes me sick. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton should be on their 3rd nominations in a row. Hell, even Taylor Kitsch did better last season than some of these nominees. And who the fuck watches Boston Legal?

I am happy about the Big Love nom, though. I think the ladies deserve individual nods too.

Posted by: Austin asking for trouble at July 16, 2009 11:48 AM

Dear Jack McBrayer, I doubt you remember being the only person in the Chicago Improv community who was nice to me circa 2001 but you were and for that I will ALWAYS love you and root for you.
As much as I have a soft spot for Duckie I hope you beat the pants off of Jon Cryer.

That is all.

Posted by: JenVegas at July 16, 2009 11:49 AM

Also, seconding the photoshop thumbs-up.

If you ever needed a second job to get you through the recession Seth, I think we've found it...

Jon Cryer was better than Chi McBride? Emerson Cod would chew him up, spit him out, knit a cozy for the leftovers then give it to Lil' Gumshoe.

Shunning Emmy.

I'm psyched for the Elizabeth Moss love; but no Eastbound and Down? Come on! And no actor from Generation Kill got nominated? I call bullshit. That show fucked my shit up last summer.

Posted by: Marra at July 16, 2009 11:57 AM

I had the Taylors fired from Emmy consideration.

Posted by: Joe McCoy at July 16, 2009 11:58 AM

You know, I actually did see both Coco Chanel and Grey Gardens. I wasn't going to go anywhere near the latter due to my love for the original doc, but my sister & my mom wanted to watch it while I was over there, and it was actually very well done. Drew Barrymore was amazing, really channeled the spirit of Little Edie, without mocking. (Also, my sister and I now call our mom "Mother darling" everytime we talk to her, in the accent. It's kind of awesome.) And Shirley MacLaine is just awesome in everything she does. I never see everthing that's nominated though, so I can't say whether any of the others are deserving.

Same goes for the drama and comedy series, though I do have to say I absolutely ADORE Elaine Stritch in 30 Rock.

Wait... what? Family Guy? I mean, I still watch it every Sunday (and most other days), but an Emmy? Really?

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 16, 2009 12:00 PM

Optimus Rhyme: Well, that or he'd crush him, turn him into a pop-up book, then feed him through a paper shredder.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at July 16, 2009 12:01 PM

Kristin Chenoweth, as Olive Snook

YAY!

Flight Of The Conchords · Jemaine Clement, as Jemaine

Another yay.

Two and a Half Men gets Emmy noms? Huh?

I've never even heard of Breaking Bad, better go look it up.

Posted by: Carrie at July 16, 2009 12:01 PM

People I would have liked to have seen get an Emmy nod:

Ed Helms
Cobie Smulders
Mary McDonnell
Kyle Chandler
Elizabeth Mitchell
Josh Holloway
Charlie Day or Kaitlin Olson
Lee Pace
Donald Faison

I'm most psyched to see who wins the supporting actor in a comedy award, between McBrayer, NPH, and Wilson that's a pretty fun race.

Posted by: Julie at July 16, 2009 12:03 PM

I'm annoyed by the fact that neither The Shield nor Battlestar Galactica got any important nominations...but at this point, the award show that neglected to recognize The Wire shouldn't be able to dissapoint more. Anyway, at least some shows got the recognition they deserve (The Office, 30 Rock, Mad Men, Damages) but I still don't understand why is Family Guy among the nominees.

Posted by: Radlum at July 16, 2009 12:04 PM

Wow, how did I miss that Alexander Skarsgard was Iceman in Generation Kill?
And yes, he should at least get a nod for that outstanding piece of acting.
Maybe this is the year Michael Emerson wins? Benjamin Linus has got to be one of the best villains ever. By the end of last season Emerson took this nerdy pathological liar mass murder all round creepy dude and added a layer of pathetic that ended up making me feel sorry for the bastard,

Posted by: Jules at July 16, 2009 12:05 PM

Oh! I didn't even see that Michael Emerson nod! Fan-fucking-tastic! Oh, he'd better get it or I'ma cut a bitch.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 16, 2009 12:09 PM

I'm torn. There is no justice (when is there ever justice in these things) if Tina Fey doesn't win for her SNL appearances. On the other hand it will just give the rodent in Wasilla more reasons to whine about people picking on her. On balance, I think Tina knows she did great work and we should all just ignore anything to do with THAT WOMAN ever again.

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 16, 2009 12:25 PM

Jesus. "24" is still getting nominated for shit? When are people going to learn that that show is, you know, how do you say... bad.

Oh, what do I care, really. I'm just grumpy.

Posted by: TK at July 16, 2009 12:26 PM

JON HAMM JON HAMM JON HAAAAAAAMM.

And I love that Elizabeth Moss was nominated. She's just freakin' amazing on that show. And John Slattery! FUCK YES.

I just watched the nominations, and I want Chandra Wilson to be my aunt or my mom's best friend or something. She is so adorable.

Who does Charlie Sheen keep providing hookers for that that turd of a show keeps getting nominations?

HAHA NO RAINBOW KILLER. UP YOURS.

And god...fucking Family Guy. It has NEVER been less funny. Never.

Posted by: figgy at July 16, 2009 12:31 PM

Oooh! Check out the noms for Reality show (as oppposed to Reality Game Show)

Antiques Roadshow
Dirty Jobs
Dog Whisperer
Intervention
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
MythBusters

It's like playing a game of "Which of these does not belong?"

Posted by: Chrissimas at July 16, 2009 12:33 PM

And who the fuck watches Boston Legal?

I do. (Or rather, I did). It's been consistently interesting, funny, quirky, thought-provoking, entertaining, moving, and well-acted throughout. I will miss it.

But for my money, James Spader's Alan Shore is the better performance, closely followed by Christian Clemenson as Jerry Espenson.
Shatner's Denny Crane is pure salty hammy goodness, though. He's one of a kind, the Shat.

I agree - Jimmy Smits was in Dexter a hell of a lot last season, I'd think too much to be counted as a guest actor. To me a guest spot is one, maybe two episodes. But who knows how the Emmy peeps think?

Posted by: Tarn at July 16, 2009 12:41 PM

Krishna, I think when Monk ends this year, that will give the voters (or whoever) a chance to consider Psych in their nominations. Roday & Hill have been overlooked for Shalhoub too many times. And it's adding insult to injury that the fucking Mentalist is getting nominated.

As a waning fan of Family Guy, I agree that this season was awful and doesn't deserve a nod. If any animated series would be there, I figured it would be South Park.

I think Tina Fey is a lock for her SNL appearance as Palin, but she deserves it. She nailed that one.

Ernest Borgnine? Um, no. Great actor, but his part in the ER finale was forgettable.

Posted by: Brie at July 16, 2009 12:41 PM

Dog Whisperer!

I love that show. Shut up.

Posted by: figgy at July 16, 2009 12:43 PM

"What's even worse is that this marks the first time since The Flinstones that an animated show actually landed a Best Comedy nod. And it goes to fucking Family Guy. According to the good people are the Emmys, Family Guy > The Simpsons. This show really is fucked." Feist

Amen to that. Fuck the emmies. The only emmy award family guy should get is: "the most offensive yet boring show on television." or "the only show capable of making two guys and a girl look like arrested development"

Posted by: "Luker" the barbarian at July 16, 2009 12:47 PM

YAY Flight of the Conchords!!!!

I want to have Jemaine's block headed babies.

Posted by: Eva at July 16, 2009 12:52 PM

Whoa, whoa, WHOA! Why the vitriol for Johnny Cryer? Let's see you have as long an acting career with a mouth like that.

Posted by: Jez at July 16, 2009 12:59 PM

*Two and a Half Men* rather

Posted by: "Luker" the barbarian at July 16, 2009 12:59 PM

By the way, the quote at the top?

A) excellent;
and
B) despite never having watched an Emmy acceptance speech, I'm going to go ahead and guess Hugh Laurie for this one.

Posted by: Tarn at July 16, 2009 1:03 PM

Yeah, I was wondering who said that. It's really adorable.

Posted by: Marra at July 16, 2009 1:19 PM

But Jeremy Feist, Family Guy IS better than The Simpsons, and even after a weak season like they've had, they're better than the best Simpson season of the last ten, twelve years. Because The Simpsons haven't been vaguely funny since 1998, possibly 1997.

Beyond that I'm surprisingly pleased with the nominations. Of course, even though they aren't listed here, the variety show nominations are stupid. Three great seasons, from Colbert, The Daily Show, and SNL, versus f'ing David Letterman, and we know that Letterman's got the best chance of winning. If it were Conan or Ferguson, I could at least be happy, but dammit all. Then again, this season of SNL was possibly the best in the series' history.

Posted by: Christian H. at July 16, 2009 1:23 PM

What the hell are Ellen Burstyn and Brenda Blethyn doing on SVU? And Carol Burnett too? Am I going to have to start watching this show?

I see once again Hugh Laurie has been nominated and once again, he won't win. My poor tv boyfriend.

Posted by: Jeni at July 16, 2009 1:26 PM

Woo, go Flight of the Conchords! And Jemaine! That makes me ridiculously happy for something in which I have absolutely no stake.

Justin Timberlake should win the Emmy for reprising his "Omeletteville" character alone.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 16, 2009 1:27 PM

YAY for Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. That guy is fun-ny

I can't believe no nods for Kyle Chandler/Connie Britton. Clearly whoever does the nominations has never ever heard of FNL.

Posted by: Michelle at July 16, 2009 1:33 PM

Seriously, Jim Parsons owns that show. It's funny mostly because of him.

Marra and Tarn, that was Tina Fey. Oh I love her so.

Posted by: figgy at July 16, 2009 1:52 PM

Jim Parsons! He makes my life. The Big Bang Theory somehow consistently makes me laugh, most of it having to do with Parsons' Sheldon.

Posted by: kelsy at July 16, 2009 1:52 PM

I love Jemaine and the Conchords, (though Murray is my absolute favourite character) It will cause me huge delight if that show happens to win something - but it probably won't!

Posted by: Mnemo at July 16, 2009 2:15 PM

I'm happy with all the Mad Men love, but disappointed that it's not Christina Hendricks or Vincent Kartheiser. I know January Jones has also gotten a nod before but her part was so much meatier this season and she was absolutely incredible playing it. Never would have guessed that Wisconsin Bar Skank #2 in Love Actually would turn out to be such a formidable dramatic actress.

Totally agree with upthread poster who said that the Big Love ladies deserve individual nods. Each one was outstanding this past season.

I hope Jim Parsons wins too. I love Big Bang Theory (perhaps because I actually get the jokes) and y'all can SUCK IT.

Posted by: TryScience at July 16, 2009 2:27 PM

LOVES IT

Posted by: Caroline at July 16, 2009 6:59 PM

Little Dorritt was seriously awesome. But then again, I would watch Matthew McFadyen do nothing. I'm also a serious whore for any costume-y literary production the BBC sees fit to make.

Posted by: bonnie at July 16, 2009 7:33 PM

This is highly embarrassing that I know this but that quote is by Tina Fey. Also I am so happy Jane Kraweski from 30 Rock got a nomination.

Also why is 24 still getting nominated, last season sucked. I really hope Kathy Griffin doesn't win again, her head will just explode. Intervention, Dirty Jobs and the dog whisperer are all great shows that deserve the Emmy.

Posted by: coco at July 16, 2009 8:33 PM

Maybe I didn't read close enough but I'll bold this just in case so no one else misses it...
DR. HORRIBLE WAS NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY

So was Motherlover (SNL Song) and the South Park episode where the world learns the dirty secert of how the US economy works. Otherwise I'm disappointed

Posted by: Luke at July 16, 2009 10:43 PM

If Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul don't win, the Emmys should all be destroyed.

And Raymond Cruz should have been nominated as Guest Actor.

Breaking Bad kicked TV ass this year.

Posted by: Cindy at July 16, 2009 10:50 PM

"Were there no other miniseries last year? Or did everyone know that “Generation Kill” was such a slam dunk that they didn’t even bother submitting?"

The Emmys have a 'One Third' rule; no more than one third of programs submitted can be nominated. Only seven miniseries were submitted.

Posted by: TylerDFC at July 17, 2009 10:59 AM

Normally, I can't stand Drew Barrymore. I stayed away from from the because I thought that it was dumb idea. But: she really impressed me. It wasn't an overdone caricature, and the accent was dead-on.

I guess it makes. Both of them are bat-shit legacies, no? Tripplehorn seems like a strange one, though. She couldn't have been in for more than two minutes, and she didn't even have to stand up. Better than fifteen seconds.

Am I the only person left who loves Dexter? Michael C. Hall can tie me up anytime.

Posted by: Treena at July 17, 2009 3:17 PM

The Emmys have been dead to me after its repeated snubbings of Buffy and Battlestar. At various times during both show's runs, each was the best show on television, and yet neither received anything more than a writing or individual episode nomination. When the game is so rigged that shows are excluded by mere virtue of being one genre, I think the best way to win is to not play.

Posted by: Zack at July 17, 2009 7:45 PM

dexter is one of the most original shows left on the air. if it losses to any other mediocre show on that list, all hope of the emmy's having any semblance of integrity is gone

Posted by: Jane at July 17, 2009 11:52 PM

I love Dexter too, Treena, but I don't have Showtime and haven't seen the last season yet so I didn't want to comment on any of the performances. And yes, Michael C. Hall can wrap me naked in saran wrap any day. (Ya know, in a non-homocidal way)
