Trade News | December 11, 2008 | Comments (73)

Here are your 2008 Golden Globe nominations. Pajiba opinion withheld, except for this: Why the hell is The Dark Knight not in the running for best motion picture? That’s bullshit And how could they even put Tom Cruise in the same category as Heath Ledger? Best Supporting Actor should’ve had just one nomination this year.

In Bruges, a comedy? Yeah, kind of...I guess...I mean, there was lots of funny in it, but....

Ah, whatever. I'm just happy to see it nominated.

Posted by: meaux at December 11, 2008 11:05 AM

Supporting role. Supporting Role! You. Mother. Fuckers.

Ferrell & Gleason tie for best actor in a comedy.

Posted by: admin at December 11, 2008 11:06 AM

Mamma Mia!?!?!?

I remember that shit being terrible. And what the hell is Mariska Hargitay doing in a female category?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 11, 2008 11:07 AM

YAY:
In Bruges - best picture
Colin Farrell - In Bruges
James Franco - Pineapple Express
Brendan Gleeson - In Bruges
Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
30 Rock

Eat me:
Entourage
Anna Paquin, True Blood -she is SO BAD in that show.
No Tell No One for best foreign film? Shenanigans, I say.

Posted by: Julie at December 11, 2008 11:07 AM

glad to see In Bruges getting some love!

Posted by: Colin at December 11, 2008 11:09 AM

Ferrell & Gleason

Now that's a movie I want to see!

Wait, is this related to that "Sneaky Pete and the Bandit" movie yesterday?

Posted by: Jay at December 11, 2008 11:10 AM

Paquin is absolutely terrible in that show. Take her out and replace her with Elisabeth Moss, please.

Posted by: samantha t at December 11, 2008 11:11 AM

I'm gonna go ahead and defend Anna Paquin, but only because I'm pretty sure none of the people who pick this shit have ever set foot in Northern Louisiana, and therefore don't know just how awful her accent is.

Posted by: Marra at December 11, 2008 11:11 AM

Jay, have you not seen In Bruges? It's one of my favorite movies from the past year, it's so clever and funny and affecting and sad and lots of other fun adjectives.

Posted by: Julie at December 11, 2008 11:13 AM

Oh wait, I think you were commenting on the misspelling. You're too quick for me :p

Posted by: Julie at December 11, 2008 11:14 AM

So can anyone debate Alec Baldwin isn't the best one there? Have you seen the man's Nixon? His Nixon!

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at December 11, 2008 11:14 AM

But it's fucking Bruges!

Posted by: admin at December 11, 2008 11:14 AM

I think Jay was commenting on my misspelling Julie.

I suck.

Tell Prisco to DO. HIS. JOB, fancy boy.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 11, 2008 11:19 AM

Brilliant misspelling.

But no, I haven't seen it.

But will "Nothing Like The Holidays" be any fun? "Home for the Holidays" or at least "Soul fun" ? I'd kinda like to go watch Alfred, Luis and Freddie.

Posted by: Jay at December 11, 2008 11:20 AM

Bolt and Kung Fu Panda might as well not even get dressed up in order to lose to Wall-E.

So help me Godtopus, if either House or True Blood beat out Dexter or Mad Men...

Posted by: branded at December 11, 2008 11:20 AM

I sucked first Admin.

Oh and this? Tony Shalhoub, Monk

PLEASE make it stop.

Posted by: Julie at December 11, 2008 11:21 AM

Slumdog Millionaire: why isn't that little boy nominated for something?

Posted by: PaddyDog at December 11, 2008 11:21 AM

Can someone please explain to me how Heath Ledger's Joker was a "supporting" role? Gary Oldman has a "supporting" role in Dark Knight - Christian Bale and Heath Ledger are the LEADS. Are they really laboring under the delusion that every movie has one male and one female lead? Is everything supposed to be a fucking hetero romance?

Posted by: Edith at December 11, 2008 11:24 AM

I intended to pop in just to say the following:

Frances McDormand for the win, bitches!!!

But then I actually saw the TV nominations. Fuck January Jones. That ho stole Elisabeth Moss's nomination. What a twat.

Posted by: Robert at December 11, 2008 11:24 AM

Tom Cruise is in Tropic Thunder?

Posted by: Jackie at December 11, 2008 11:26 AM

My fingers are crossed for Franco

However...no nod for Let The Right One In for best foreign? That movie was amazing

Posted by: Park at December 11, 2008 11:29 AM

Jon Hamm's John Ham!!!

Posted by: pseudoliterati at December 11, 2008 11:35 AM

Are they really laboring under the delusion that every movie has one male and one female lead? Is everything supposed to be a fucking hetero romance?

Posted by: Edith at December 11, 2008 11:24 AM

------------------------------------------------

I was wondering that too, especially considering Dark Knight's massive homoerotic undertones, probably the most homosexual movie since Top Gun.

I know, *I* would choose Ledger over Maggie Gi.hell..ah hem..whatever, any day.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 11, 2008 11:36 AM

Neil Patrick Harris FTW!

Seriously, that man is so funny and charismatic, and keeps me tuning in to How I Met Your Mother every week.

I was going to ask if anyone had actually seen In Bruges (I was halfway sure it had gone straight to DVD), but apparently that movie gets a lot of love here. Carry on.

Posted by: Girlnone at December 11, 2008 11:40 AM

Fuck the Best Animated category.

Fuck it right in the ear.

Posted by: twig at December 11, 2008 11:43 AM

"Weeds" has got to be the only comedy to feature violent torture and murder. This last season was great but it was pretty light on the funny that's for sure.

"The Dark Knight" absolutely deserves a Best Picture, best screenplay, and best director nod. If the Oscars follow the lead here and snub it then that should do it for the last minute shred of credibility those sycophant fuckwads have.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 11, 2008 11:46 AM

Is everything supposed to be a fucking hetero romance?

Edith, what would happen if we raised child actors and actresses in households that had two leads of the same sex eligible for the same award? We'd be redefining an institution that The Academy established almost 80 years ago. Obviously having two male or two female leads is a director's lifestyle choice that most of the awards voters have been opposed to.

P.S. Never take me seriously.

RE: Ledger as Best Supporting Actor

I can see their arguement for this seeing as how he wasn't in the movie for nearly as long as anyone thought he would be, but he did have a considerable amount of face time and OWNED every moment when he was on screen.

Now that being said...a precedent has already been set to make him able to get Best Actor...and i think we may have to wait for the Oscars for that one. Anyone remember 2003? nicole Kidman got the nom and the win for Best Actress in a Lead Role for The Hours. The. Fucking. Hours. Not only a terribly ham-fisted movie...but she was in the fucking thing for all of what...15 minutes at most??????? Bullshit. Bullshit I say. they gave it to her because they were admitting that everyone fucked up giving Halle Berry the win for Monster's Ball the year before.

There also shows another precedent. The Make-up Oscar. Kidman for The Hours. We saw it recently for Scorcese and the Departed. And the Academy may way to say..."Oops! We fucked up!" by him not getting the win over Hoffman (although Capote was a GREAT fucking role for him). The only thing that separates the 2 was the amount of daring it took and ability to let himself go as an actor in Brokeback. Every actor has done some sort of Capote work at one point in their life. usually something at a city theater with a leaky roof. One man show. 12 person audience.

Ledger better get the one that people think "matters" or I feel a murdering coming on.

Hey...BTW....we need to start thinking of the 2009 Bus Tour. Dustin! Hey...Dustin! Lemme write this thing up man....

Posted by: PissBoy at December 11, 2008 11:54 AM

I have always felt that the Golden Globes were a celebrity grab.

Most stars, less really talented people.

Fun speeches b/c of the booze served though.

Posted by: Amanda at December 11, 2008 12:02 PM

Entourage? For chrissake. That show relies on douchy, male 20-somethings like me to think "Damn, that's a sweet life. I'll ignore the storylines that make no sense and the characters who i don't like and aren't funny (sans Ari) because...DUDEBRAH! LOOK AT THOSE HOT CHICKS!!"

Where is the love for Always Sunny? Seriously. That show is the bees knees, the cat's pajamas and the tits. All at the same time. It's also really goddamn funny

Posted by: Billowing Backpacks at December 11, 2008 12:18 PM

So The Dark Knight gets no "Best Drama" nod and Mamma Mia! gets a "Best Comedy/Musical" nod?!

Do we even need the Golden Globes anymore? It's just the "Hollywood Foreign Press", they can do a critic's list instead of an overblown spectacle that will never eclipse the Oscars. Plus, there's other foreign awards shows like the BAFTA's, why do we need what seems like a bastard child of the Oscars and the Emmys?! I mean, c'mon...these are the people that stiffed Jack Bauer out of a Golden Globe! They gave Grey's Anatomy the Globe for Best "Drama" when 24 Season 5 was nominated. The same season THAT WON THE EMMY FOR BEST DRAMA MONTHS PRIOR! THE BEST DAMN SEASON OF THE SHOW! And what do we get instead...Shonda Rhimes repeating the word "Seriously?!" for two fucking minutes.

That night Johnny Walker, with his golden jacket and walking stick of death, assured me such a slight would never happen again. Johnny...it's time to do what must be done.

Posted by: Mike R. at December 11, 2008 12:21 PM

The Golden Globes have always been a little odd, with the whole voted-by-Europeans thing they have going on. But Paquin's nomination makes everything clear. They're not European; they're just idiots. She is AWFUL on that show.

Posted by: Todd at December 11, 2008 12:22 PM

No Dark Knight?

Fuck it, I'm ignoring these awards completely. OK I lie. I love these stupid awards shows.

Do you think DK will get an Best Picture nomination at the Oscars? That would be the most kickass thing EVER.

I have to say I'm glad there are no major offenses in the TV categories, except maybe Monk. Urgh, make it stop.

Mamma Mia? Of COURSE. It's not an awards show unless Merryl Streep is nominated for something.

Posted by: figgy at December 11, 2008 12:28 PM

I have to say I'm glad there are no major offenses in the TV categories...

Figgy, you purposely left out Debra Messing for "The Starter Wife", didn't you? You're having a laugh, aren't you? Aren't you?

Posted by: Mike R. at December 11, 2008 12:35 PM

Oh wait wait wait.

I just saw Debra Messing and Entourage.

Nevermind!

I blame it on not having enough coffee.

Mike R: No! I'm slapping myself on the forehead for not paying enough attention. Durr.

Posted by: figgy at December 11, 2008 12:41 PM

MARISA TOMEI! MARISA TOMEI! MARISA TOMEI!!!

She gets my vote for 1) getting hotter the older she gets, 2) doing more nude scenes and 3) showing her acting chops even though she's naked (though actually, I'm not sure I'm the best judge of this last reason seeing as, you know, she's NAKED)

Posted by: jimbob at December 11, 2008 12:49 PM

Hargitay has 5 emmy noms and a GG . What's the surprise?

Colin Farrel? What a joke!!!

Posted by: Yoybe at December 11, 2008 12:51 PM

WTF is "Last Chance Harvey"??

Posted by: Melissa at December 11, 2008 12:54 PM

Well, you wouldn't take a stand, so I did.

I haven't seen ANY of the dramatic films in question yet (I save them up for the fucking school break, so DON'T JUDGE ME, MOTHERFUCKERS), so my picks vis a vis the film awards are pretty much based on buzz -- but the television picks are based on merit, not what the Globes people will do.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at December 11, 2008 1:31 PM

All right, this calls for my own seriously random list. Shittiest Award Shows

5) The Oscars

Biased, and retarded. Gives award shows to the most predictable ham fested movies immaginable.

4) The Golden Globes

They finally found a way to make the Oscars shittier. And it's on fucking NBC no less.

3) Grammys

Goes out of their way to be boring, gives out so many awards everyone gets one, yet never the right people.

2) Emmys

Fuck's up every year. Gave out a ton of Emmys to fucking Everybody Loves Raymond.

1) MTV awards

No further comment necessary.

Posted by: George at December 11, 2008 1:38 PM

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button hasn't come out yet!!! Isn't it due out the 24th? Fuck, I'd like to see it before they shove awards up it's ass.

Posted by: TWoP Fan at December 11, 2008 1:41 PM

Oh and this? Tony Shalhoub, Monk

PLEASE make it stop.

Seriously. This probably irritates me the most. I'm not going to debate all the "serious" picks, but fucking Monk? It's not funny. Shalhoub isn't funny. Every time I see a commercial for this piece of shit show whilst watching House reruns on USA, I want to punt Shalhoub in the fucking face.

Gah.

Posted by: Nicole at December 11, 2008 1:42 PM

Stephen Moyer deserves an award for convincing anyone in the audience he wants to fuck her, let alone commingle their blood.

Anna Paquin is, apparently and nauseatingly, Alan Ball's idea of what a sexy young female is supposed to be.

Which shocks me, really, because I thought Lauren Ambrose was his idea of what a sexy young female is supposed to be, and I was totally okay with that. Smart, funny, acerbic, normal-sized.

Then along comes this vapid, bottle-blond, shrill, shrieking, mewling ASSHOLE who CANNOT ACT... Christ, why do people keep hiring this twit? She must give one HELL of a blowjob. Except, Alan Ball is GAY. So his casting director must be straight. Or a very corrupt lesbian. Which means Anna Paquin is adept in the art of cunnilingus.

Sigh. I have gone down a road I never meant to travel. But there it is.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at December 11, 2008 1:45 PM

Speaking of I've Loved You So Long, will we ever get a review?

I'm glad True Blood got the nod but honestly, Anna Paquin is the worst part of the show. The actress who should have been nominated is Rutina Wesley (Tara).

Posted by: Cindy at December 11, 2008 1:47 PM

Okay, I thought this movie was funny, but how was Tropic Thunder mentioned, but not Iron Man? HELLO. Both that and TDK should've been mentioned, imo.

Posted by: duckandcover at December 11, 2008 1:49 PM

OMG, that list for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie is AWESOME!!!!!! Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason were AMAZING in In Bruges, and James Franco?! HYSTERICAL!

...But I'm sure none of them will win.

And, who wants to take bets with me that regardless of how fucking unfunny it is, 30 Rock will beat Weeds and The Office.

And to Nicole, I personally think Tony Shaloub is amazing, but the last few seasons of Monk have been very poorly written. Back in the early days, though, that show was the shit. And him in Galaxy Quest? Stole every scene he was in, along with Sam Rockwell.

Posted by: Audiosuede at December 11, 2008 1:55 PM

Anthony Hopkins in Silence Of The Lambs and Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest notwithstanding, Ledger's screen time merits a supporting role in my opinion. Anyway, it'll make his winning the prize (for the Oscars too) a slam dunk. In the lead category, that might not be the case.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 11, 2008 2:00 PM

Hopefully dexter will win in it's category.

Posted by: Jean at December 11, 2008 2:03 PM

Benjamin Button is worth seeing, I suppose, but I was largely "meh" about it. I have many narrative and thematic problems with it. I won't go into those to save y'all any spoilers. I don't think it merits the awards attention it looks like it will be getting. (I cynically must wonder if it's just a case of a $150 million Warner/Paramount ambitious joint venture needing acclaim in order to combat a potential big loss financially.)

As for the rest of these nominations...

Lost was robbed.

In Bruges barely qualifies as a "comedy," but I suppose they had to stick it somewhere. It has several laughs, but it's extremely dark thematically.

I hope Peter Gabriel's "Down To Earth" wins best song.

Sorry, but I'm glad Dark Knight was shut out save for Heath.

The Golden Globes are lame for not having a documentary category.

The Golden Globes are extremely lame for not dividing original and adapated screenplays.

Tom Cruise for Tropic Thunder? Really? I'm sure Downey's great, but do we really need a second jokey supporting nomination from the same movie and thus rob the guys from Milk? For that matter, why don't they divide the supporting category into dramatic and comedic like they do the leads?

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 11, 2008 2:05 PM

Not that I've seen them all, but based on the ones I have seen plus reviews, the entire Best Comedy or Musical category doesn't deserve to be nominated for anything. Or weren't there any other musicals or comedies made this year.

Posted by: that girl at December 11, 2008 2:25 PM

How is it that every other person involved in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, including Grip #4 was nominated for an award except Scarlett? What a travesty. I guess being a smug self important biatch while on the press run during the movie wasn't the best plan of attack. That or being in a movie where you are the worst actress BY FAR, including Grip #4.

Now silent porno....that may be your best career move. You aren't even the best looking person in your couple and I'm straight. (that was for you Dustin).

As for other awards. In Best Actor in a TV Comedy or Musical, I had the Sesame Street song "One of these is not like the others" running through my head. Kevin Connolly. What's next, Turtle on Inside the Actors Studio?

In Bruges was pretty funny. Where was JCVD for JCVD? And finally, Tom Cruise was not deserving and if he wins, I'll burn the place down.

Posted by: Rubble44 at December 11, 2008 2:42 PM

I'm pretty much thrilled to see Colin Farrell and In Bruges nominated. Surprised, but thrilled. And I hope the 30 Rock team sweeps all their noms, too.

What's with all the Dexter love around here? While I could never HATE a show about serial killers, over all the series is weak. The only reason I'm still watching is I can get the DVDs for free from my local library. I'll watch just about anything for free.

And House? Bah. Just another formulaic doctor drama brought to you by GE medical supplies.

I do agree with the In Bruges support though. How can you not call it a comedy with a line like "fucking cunt kids"?

Posted by: MadameUgly at December 11, 2008 5:48 PM

Yeah, I guess In Bruges is a solid comedy through and through. It's just a little jarring seeing it sitting next to Mamma Mia! as the same genre.

The Golden Globes? Really? I never cease to be amazed at the things that animate you people. It reminds me of this hotel I was at recently where the ad in the elevator touted the restaurant's "award-winning cuisine." The award in question was probably a Golden Globe. Case closed.

Posted by: zyzzyva at December 11, 2008 10:58 PM

I almost peed myself seeing that 'In Bruges' (and Farrell and Gleeson) was nominated. It's my favorite movie of the year. And I'm glad to see that at least the Globes are starting to realize that broad, bawdy comedies often feature stellar performances. Too bad it took so long, because Steve Carrell should have gotten one for 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'.

Also, January Jones more than deserved her nom. Betty Draper became one of the most interesting, even if not the most likable, characters on the show this past season, and January Jones rocked the shit out of the part.

Posted by: Mimi at December 12, 2008 3:07 AM

Posted by: jeannine at December 12, 2008 4:27 AM

Exactly why the Golden Globes are about as reliable an indicator of present movie going taste and quality as the Grammy's are for music. No one cares about this shit anymore.

Posted by: Andrew at December 12, 2008 6:21 PM

Why has Desperate Housewives been snubbed? I can't beleive Debra Messing and Sally Field are nominated, when the women of DH deserve it more.

Posted by: Pissed at December 12, 2008 9:05 PM

does that mean that if I die I'll be considered a great actor??
man! i don't want to die

" in bruges " belongs in the major category and the only category that should claim " mama mia "is the one for worst casting.in a year with some great female performances, i think penelope cruz deserved a nomination for " elegy ".

Posted by: snake at December 15, 2008 1:04 AM

i totally agree that tom cruise should not be in the same category as heath ledger. i mean come on! tropic thunder was not even that funny. heath better win that category. and i am pissed that the dark knight was not in the best picture category. the oscars better not snub the dark knight either.
