Three for Show and Three to Go
An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Seth Freilich
So you’ve started dating someone new and it’s going absolutely swimmingly. Your last date was at their place and you both bonded over a third-date flick. Now, for the first time, they’re coming over to your pad. You just moved in, so shit’s a mess — books, CDs and DVDs are scattered all over the place. But you want to make the perfect impression. There’s not much time before they arrive, but as you quickly glance over at the stacks of DVDs, you think to yourself: “Shit! There are a couple of DVDs that need to get buried in a box right the fuck now. And some others that I gotta make sure are in plain sight.” And with that, you’re off to conspicuously place three DVDs on the top of the piles, while quietly stashing three others out of sight and out of mind so you don’t have to explain why in the hell you own these embarrassing things. What do you make sure shows, and what do you make sure goes?
I spent far too long looking over my DVD collection and pondering all sorts of issues, but here’s what I came up with:
DVDs to show: Freaks & Geeks, The Big Lebowski, and Leon (The Professional).
DVDs to go: Devil’s Advocate, Street Fighter, and The Powerpuff Girls — Down ‘n’ Dirty.

DVD's to Show:
- Michael Clayton: to show i'm with the times, and plus it's a "respectable yet kickass movie"
- A Walk To Remember: because it says "Yeah, I'm a guy, but I'm not afraid to slog it through a chick flick." That, and it has Mandy Moore in it anyway, so I can play the "oh, he's a guy so he obviously likes Mandy Moore" card.
- at least one season of 24, preferrably Season 5: she needs to at least have some inkling as to what she's getting herself into.
DVD's to hide:
- Both of my Doctor Who season sets and my one Torchwood season set: Because, nothing sets off the "geek" alarm better. I'll watch it with friends, but it's not exactly sexual catnip.

Yeah, not so much the sex scene as the most brutal stabbing I think I've still ever scene on film.
... It almost made my stay list. *cough*
Also, Alabamapink, which Tori album dropped you off the wagon? It was Scarlet for me (which I've picked up more of an appreciation for lately) but the hints of it started with Choirgirl.

I say FUCK THAT! to hiding anything. (I'm typing the following words to stay with the whole in-your-face, fuck that! vibe...please excuse my language)...
I say FUCK THAT! to hiding anything. If dis chick is any good she'll realize that we ALL have some bad movies we absolutely love. i would be shrewd enough to turn it into a fun conversation for the evening. (...IMAGINE what kinda guilty secrets a simple small-time conversation like that could lead to.)
If she judges me for having Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Chopping Mall, BiG, or RoboCop 2 in my collection along with the hundreds of excellent choices then FUCK HER! She's a swunty bitch who doesn't deserve my time. I wear my badges people. With pride!

I think my disillusionment with Tori started on Strange Little Girls but the nail in the coffin was The Beekeeper. I seriously could only find one track on that whole album that didn't give me aural fits and starts. American Doll Posse's got some decent stuff on it and was slightly redeeming. However, she's long worn off the luster she once had. I blame marriage and motherhood for turning her all softie.

Julie, with regards to the midget porn, don't feel bad. a girlfriend of mine turned 18 her first semester and we gave her an animated "hansel & gretel" porn. the only difference was the witches house was a vagina and she had a garden of penises out back and she would hop from one to another saying "bouncy bouncy bouncy."
another friend of mine dropped acid for the fist time so we showed her "apocolypse climax II." the first line of the movie is "i looooove the smell of poohtang in da mornin'."
trust me, i know ALL about the "would you rather" games....

HA HA HA! PissBoy, I watched that on Sunday while folding laundry. " Sorry, but a toll is a toll. And a roll is a roll. And if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls. ...I made that up."
If she judges me for having Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Chopping Mall, BiG, or RoboCop 2 in my collection along with the hundreds of excellent choices then FUCK HER! She's a swunty bitch who doesn't deserve my time.
And WORD, if a guy would care that much that I may or may not fall asleep to my copy of Sleepless in Seattle occasionally...then he's too big a tool to be with me. The only movie I would in all seriousness hide would be Midgets on Wheels, because, well...eww.

To hide:
ConAir (I technically have this on VHS)
Practical Magic (I liked it in the theatre, but it definitely did not hold up upon re-viewing...)
Possibly the entire set of Angel--I might not want to potentially scare him/her off at the outset.
And AlexacCastrate why in the world would you hide Real Genius?! That movie is not only hilarious, it actually holds up after 20+ years!

2. Steel Magnolias - LOVE this movie, can quote it by heart.. no guy needs to see this movie anywhere in a girl's house. It's the opposite of sexual catnip -- which would be like cat urine?
3. When Harry Met Sally - came with # 1 on my list

Tamatha Real Genius definitely holds up. I enjoy the fact that the shots they show with everyone on the computer doesn't say shit like "Secret CrossBow Mainframe". It's shitty, less than Apple IIE technology at best and they weren't afraid to flaunt it. As opposed to say "Hackers" which made my 9 year old niece think that computer worms actually LOOK like worms. God she's fucking stupid. She spent the day wondering what the color puce smells like. Fuckin idiot.

The entire Disney pre-2000 Disney Animated collection (honestly, I have LOTS of nieces and nephews, I swear)

Did i mention it was a double feature? the other one was little red riding wood.
and yes, that's the real title. to say the wolf ate her would be an understatement...
Ha ha ha ha!!! Oh god, I love it.

Three to Stay:
A Fish Called Wanda- I appreciate humour! And Kevin Kline! And I like Monty Python!
Rushmore- I am quirky! I like Bill Murray! This is clearly the best Wes Anderson movie!
Heathers- I don't hate the 80s! I have an dark sense of humour! If you start killing people, I might forge a suicide note so that you don't get arrested!
Three to Hide:
Mulan (Special Edition)- I'm a psycho who has a creepy crush on animated men!
Neven Been Kissed- I wanted to sleep with my English teacher in highschool!
Goldeneye- I have seen every James Bond movie, and I might think Pierce Brosnan is the best Bond!
Posted by: Zuzu at March 5, 2008 3:25 PM
DVDs to show: Arrested Development (because of the Arrested Development Test - you don't like it, I don't like you), Monty Python collection (another test), and The Godfather (I-III)(guys appreciate that I enjoy this crap; I'm looking to impress with this one).
DVDs to go: The Last Unicorn (we don't bring that out - or reveal my unhealthy obsession with it - until we've been dating at least a month or two). And that's really it. I'm proud of my DVD collection, even if some of them are bad! Okay, maybe I'd hide Troop Beverly Hills.
ERIN - "Pride and Prejudice BBC version" - Are you my roommate from freshman year of college?!? This was her most prized possession.
Posted by: tt_marie at March 5, 2008 3:26 PM
To Show: 1. The Philadelphia Story-Great writing, plus Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, and Cary Grant, and one of the best drunk scenes in cinema. 2. Invader Zim-Cheery nihilistic animation.
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark-If you don't like this movie, you're not even getting to first base with me. To Go: 1. From Dusk to Dawn-It was a gift! 2. Abs of Steel-What?! This old thing!?! As if I need help in that area! 3. The Adventures of TinTin in Chinese-Must hide the depths of my pretentiousness for as long as possible.

Ten Commandments: The Musical (this one requires a bit of persuasion to see. Ignore the cheesy SFX and focus on teh awesomeness of the singing and Val Kilmer!)
Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical (yet another one that requires a gentle introduction. Some people just can't give the Hoff a chance)

is it really worth the effort or is this something i should leave to the felicity/dawson's creek crowd?
Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite shows, I am not afraid to stand on my swivel chair at work and declare my love and scare my coworkers. It's really funny and warm and the characters become like family to you. I...am a nerd.
Zuzu, I LOVE Goldeneye! Xenia Onatopp is my idol, I want to crush a man with my thighs one day.

Farscape Season 1
The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr.
I'm secure in the hipness of each of these shows. Clever writing, masculine and self-assured main characters - Each would make for fine date night viewing.
Bury and Forget:
Star Trek: Voyager: Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and the Original Series can stay, but no more than two seasons each. Voyager, however, is just indefensible.
Jack of all Trades: Sorry, Bruce, but this show just wasn't that good. Probably the worst thing Bruce Campbell appeared in until Spider-Man 3.
Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Scientific studies have shown that quoting this film produces such a high level of nerdiness that it can actually cause the breakdown of estrogen molecules. I'll smuggle away Meaning of Life too, but Flying Circus can stay.

To show:
1. Invader Zim
2. The Great Escape
3. Labyrinth (anyone that can't handle my love of Bowie and his area isn't right for me anyway)
To hide
1. The Muppet Movie (don't wanna look like I'm obsessed with puppets or anything)
2. Follow That Bird (except, maybe I am if I have to hide two puppet related movies)
3. There is a film in my collection that I can't even remember the name of at the moment. I just know it starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and had something to do with magic, intoxicating food and it is all kinds of awful. I only own it because my mother accidentally bought herself 2(!) copies, so she gave me the extra.

that would be called "Simply Irresistable" also with sean patrick flannery. you're right. it's goddamn awful, painful in fact.

jen310, that's what the END button's for...to see everyone's secret shame.
You shouldn't be ashamed of those, though. I have practically all of them myself (The Lion King is, and will always be, my favorite Disney movie).
Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 5, 2008 4:47 PM
For those who love the muppets and want their shirts, keep your eyes peeled. I found a Beaker shirt at Target and picked up a black and white Animal shirt several years ago at a Hot Topic. Check E-bay, they have a ton of muppets stuff on E-bay.
I also wouldn't hide any movies from a date, but I should probably hide some from my MIL who likes to borrow movies that she hasn't seen including:
1. Caligula
2. The Red Shoe Diaries
3. Tales from the Kama Sutra
When I told her I liked foriegn films she thought I said porn and just kinda dazed off into the distance. Oh well.
Three movies I would push:
1. The Boondock Saints
2. GunShy (Oliver Platt is so funny in this, and it has Liam Neeson)
3. The Usual Suspects

SoD - The problem with leaving The Last Unicorn in plain view is as follows:
1) Anyone who sees this sitting on my coffee table is going to ask what the hell it is - i.e., why does a 26 year old girl have a cartoon about unicorns sitting around her apartment
2) When I try to defend it, they'll laugh, and then they'll want to see it becuase it looks weird and funny and because I'll have spent a half an hour passionately describing its importance in film and in my life
3) THEN I'll be forced to watch it in front of them and I'll inevitably BAWL MY EYES OUT when Amalthea decides to stay in unicorn form and if that isn't fucking embarassing (and a deal breaker), I don't know what is.

Muppet Movie? Really? How could you be ashamed of the greatest road trip movie ever?
There are many others here that I could question similarly. Many of you ladies would have nothing to worry about if I were visiting your apartment, but maybe I'm the weirdo.
I'd hide nothing. I own it. I enjoy it (or there is some story as to why I have it). Deal with it.

Ye gods, I don't own enough DVDs to play! I'd hide the copy of Cruel Intentions that my little brother lent me over a year ago (which I never did watch).
The Greg the Bunny series would definitely stay. Jack (VHS) stays too. Uhhh....Oh yeah, Catch-22 stays! I think I'll keep dad's Airplane VHS prominently displayed. Don't think I have any more to hide. Some may argue my VHSs of Jack and Hook should be hidden (burned?), but I feel no shame.
To those who plan on hiding Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, and Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail (really??), feel free to give them to me if you decide to just toss them, eh? I loved those movies! Really should own them, actually...

I am in awe of the fellow Muppet freaks here. I would flaunt that with no shame, especially if it involves Grover, Big Bird, or any of the Fraggles. Same with old school Disney films, Harold & Kumar, & Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Mel Brooks still had it.
Undercover Brother & Coming to America are pretty funny, in my opinion. I think Undercover Brother is a good satire on the 70's Black culture, and Coming to America was back when Eddie Murphy was actually funny.
Lickoriche, was that Kama Sutra the version with Sarita Choudhury & Naveen Andrews? 'Cause I kinda like that one.

Completely agree with you on Beekeeper (I'm thinking somehow we had this conversation on a thread already, but I'm always repeating myself), but the strange thing is my friend got the limited edition LP and there's a song on the DVD called 'Garlands' and it's old Tori. All the power, all the awesome, all the beauty, and all I could do was just wonder why it wasn't on the actual album.
She's still doing the old Tori awesome, but it's hidden on bonus tracks and live concert stuff. Very wierd.

I own the vinyl & dvd for Crossroads - I love anything about the blues, even cliched Hollywood cheese/crap. YES, that includes Black Snake Moan (Dustin can bite me).
It's hard to believe someone dissed Bride & Prejuidice up top & nobody even commented. What's not to like in Americanized Bollywood? It's worth owning just for the beauty of Aishwarya Rai, & their version of Austen's story is as good as any.
For my normal (Pajibafied taste of course I own everything by the Coens & Whedon, plan to get Freaks & Geeks.

You know, it's not like I don't have a vague recognition of stuff like this being out in the world somewhere. But, oh, the horror that has just risen up from the screen to smite me.
*sobs* CLOWNS BAD! GO AWAY!
Stew, Sekhmet's right - The Crow could get you laid with the right person. Said person's toenails are probably painted black even as we speak.

Sekhmet: Because I'm an idiot and completely forgot about American Vampire ($2 bad "horror" movie, Carmen Electra, no boobs, I need new friends). Memory ain't what it used to be. Upon further perusal, you could also throw in Walking Tall 3: The Final Chapter.
Also, Sekhemt was a badass Samurai Trooper, though my favorite was Dais. For no reason really. If you're referring to Egyptian mythology don't mind my ramblings.

Yeah. I worked in a movie store when Spongebob came out and I thought it was hysterical, and parents of kids thought I was insane. Or a stoner.
(Ironically, to the guy who mentioned Finding Nemo upthread, that was the first movie I ever saw while stoned. Go figure.)
And I love the Brak Show. It is the funniest, most random little show on Adult Swim, or Cartoon Network, period. (Aside from some Aqua Teen - specifically, Handbanana.)

Posted by: Elfrieda at March 6, 2008 1:01 AM
greer, someplace upthread you mentioned House of the Spirits in your hide pile. I've never seen the movie, but I motherfucking HATED that book. I don't care how much of a modern literary classic it's supposed to be, I thought it was a stinking heap of ass on fire. I had to read it for AP World Lit in my sophomore year of high school, and I hated it so much that I've never read another word by Isabel Allende.
Anyway, back on topic, it feels a little weird to be saying this but I wholeheartedly agree with Pissboy. This whole show/hide idea just isn't my kind of thing. Actually several people have said they think it's silly, but Pissboy said it first.
I never hide anything when a date or anyone else visits. If I don't want someone to know me well enough to be able look at my stuff, then I don't invite them over. Besides, if I had to hide every random, cheesy or theoretically embarrassing thing I owned, I may as well turn my house into a storage facility and move into a hotel. I'm one of those people who's far more inclined to display all my weirdest qualities right away. It saves a lot of time and weeds out the weaklings.
Posted by: Sarina at March 6, 2008 1:30 AM
I have to agree with Sarina - I'm far more likely to showcase my X-files, animu, Bale collection (including Equilibrium, because you can never tell me that movie was not awesome), my serial killer antihero junk, and old dude + probably not legal girl stuff than hide it away like it shames me.
I don't date, but if for some strange reason I decided to start, I'd hide none of my interests. If the fact that I like Humbert Humbert and Patrick Bateman (and wish they were members of my family) freaks anyone out, it's because they're too weak to handle my immense power level.

I think clown midget porn will just open a hole in the fabric of space if it were ever created. The sheer horrorificness of the idea would be enough to send everybody in a five mile radius into Cthulhuian madness. Mankind itself will be sucked into the nethers of space, doomed to spend all eternity lamenting their tenuous hold on sanity, as the folds of time close around them and draw them into a chilling future of pain and suffering.
Or, you know...really be awful. Either or.

Lickoriche, was that Kama Sutra the version with Sarita Choudhury & Naveen Andrews? 'Cause I kinda like that one.
Nope, that one is called "a tale of love", the one I have is "the perfumed garden". It is about a guy who can't get it up for his lady but is obsessed with a statue in India. It is revealed that he is the reincarnation of the statue's lover who is doomed to impotence except with her. The statue becomes a woman when she feels her lovers presence or something like that.
It was a horrible movie that I would love to get rid of, but my husband has an unnatural attachment to dvds and will not let me get rid of even duplicates. I have a feeling that in like 10 years I will kinda remember the plot and mistakingly think I liked it and pick it up again on amazon or something only to be dissapointed yet again.
