This morning, the NYTimes ran an op-ed with this infuriating headline: To Win Again, Democrats Must Stop Being the Abortion Party.

The substance of the article is about what you’d expect: Donald Trump is a dictatorial racist, sexist, xenophobic monster, but the Democrats lost because we agree with roughly 80 percent of the country that abortion should be legal.

Did anyone notice the byline on the piece?

“Thomas Groome is a professor of theology and religious education at Boston College.”

Fuck you, buddy.

Reminder: The Republicans won the presidency, Congress, and the Senate by hard-lining their issues and REFUSING to buckle. There is no reason we shouldn’t do the same. If anything, we lose because we don’t take hard enough stands, and it makes us look weak.

The current political climate, for better or worse, is based on strength of conviction. We need to stop with this conciliatory bullshit. We are the party that supports giving its citizenry protection and choices. The second we step back from that, we abandon principle for short-term political gain, and the long-term effects of quitting on abortion would be utterly disastrous.

If we’re losing the abortion debate, it’s not because we’re pro-choice. It’s because we continue to let the GOP control the narrative. We should be screaming from the rooftops at them and at the media about the stats and truths about abortion. Instead we continue to bring plastic spoons to the abortion gunfight.

How many times have we seen Democrats decry that, if the roles were reversed right now, the Republicans would be losing their shit?

Instead of complaining about what the GOP would do in our position, we need to behave like the Republicans would in our situation. We need to SHUT DOWN AMERICA until the investigation between Donald Trump and Russia is completed. We need to SHUT DOWN THE PRESIDENCY until Donald Trump disentangles himself from his business interests. We need to SHUT DOWN the Supreme Court confirmation of Neil Gorsuch until we can ascertain whether our President is legitimate. The Republicans SHUT DOWN Merrick Garland’s confirmation because, they said, they wanted to let America weigh in in the next election. They did, and while Donald Trump won the election, the Democrats won the popular vote and right now, there’s never been a more unpopular President during his first 100 days.

Why should the Democrats roll over for Trump? Popular opinion is on our side. Donald Trump can’t even corral the Republican majority to pass legislation it’s been campaigning on for seven years. He’s a weak leader in an ineffectual party, and now is certainly not the time for Democrats to weaken their position on an issue in which majority opinion agrees with us.

Now is the time to double down on our core issues and take back the narrative. Instead of playing defense, the Democrats need to push back, reclaim our agenda, and stubbornly remind America that we brought the country back from the Great Recession, that we are the party of the people, and that we are on the side of history. Instead of placating a few interest groups and begging for a few demographic scraps, we need to remind the US of A why those motherfuckers should get in line.
