Okay, this actually made me laugh out loud.

  • You chose Payback over Braveheart?

Posted by: PaddyDog at November 8, 2010 12:00 PM

that 2nd bullet point is reserved for "chicken run", right?

    RIGHT?!

Posted by: gp at November 8, 2010 12:01 PM

They give PhD's out for that shit now?

Posted by: admin at November 8, 2010 12:02 PM

If Mel Gibson has to have a LAST movie, then playing a crazy person with his hand up a beaver seems strangely appropriate.

Posted by: BWeaves at November 8, 2010 12:05 PM

No love for Road Warrior? Pay back IS awesome though.

gp, His performance in Chicken Run is no defense for him since he played a cock in that. That would actually hurt his case.

Posted by: Paultera at November 8, 2010 12:06 PM

    The Road Warrior
    Lethal Weapon 1 & 2
    Braveheart

Posted by: Fredo at November 8, 2010 12:12 PM

I think he's pretty awesome in everything.

Also, I still dance to Michael Jackson's music. Chinatown, The Pianist, and Rosemary's Baby are still listed amongst my favorite movies. And I'm still going to buy Charlie Sheen's new cologne, "Hooker Blood" (Smell the fear...).

    I consume indiscriminately. Beware.

Posted by: superasente at November 8, 2010 12:21 PM

I think he's a fantastic actor. The proof of this is that apparently he is a vile, racist, mysogynistic dude in every day life, but I got almost nothing of that in his various roles.

There are clearly many actors and actresses who just take roles that are themselves in film. This guy isn't one of them.

And yes damnit, Payback was a better role than Braveheart.

Posted by: frobme at November 8, 2010 12:44 PM

Despite it all, I still think Gibson is a good actor and a decent director. He's clearly out of his goddam mind, but maybe that's what makes him a good actor.

So he just needs to shut the fuck up and get on some meds or something. And stay away from women. Take a vow of celibacy (which would be in keeping with his Catholic beliefs), because he also clearly has poor judgment in the area of interpersonal relations.

I'm not on his side or anything, his behavior is repellent, I'm just sayin', if I was his manager or adviser, I'd advise him thusly.

Posted by: Slash at November 8, 2010 12:48 PM

I agree that Mel in "Payback" is awesome. Almost as awesome as Mel in "Road Warrior." Those kinds of roles seem to play to his strengths as an actor. When he tries to be funny (onscreen anyway), it doesn't quite work, and is in fact kinda creepy.

Posted by: Slash at November 8, 2010 12:50 PM

    he's a good actor and it's all i want

Posted by: caro at November 8, 2010 12:54 PM

His Hamlet was pretty amazing, too.

Posted by: Machine at November 8, 2010 12:56 PM

I saw that joke coming a mile away, but your punchline was longer.

Payback notwithstanding, I don't think you can defend Mel based on its merits alone. Like that pedophilic child rapist superasente mentioned, at some point you just have to say, "I can't stand by you anymore." What saddens me, is that more people were upset and outraged about the Kanye/Taylor Swift debacle than Polanski/Gibson combined, and Kanye was right! Mel and Roman were clearly in the wrong and deserve to be ostracized, if not imprisoned. A person is only as good as his worst act, in my opinion.

Posted by: EJ at November 8, 2010 12:56 PM

Plus, you've all seemed to forget how awesome he was in Maverick. If you're going to choose a film with which to defend him...

Posted by: EJ at November 8, 2010 1:00 PM

I'm with frobme. Gibson was my favorite 80's actor. He seems to be a racist prick given his pattern behavior, but that doesn't make me like Lethal Weapon 2 any less. I guess I don't get why this guy is villified when so many others get a pass. It's not like Russel Crowe is a saint, either. It comes down to the fact I really don't care about these peoples' personal life.

If they are compelling on screen then I'll watch their performances and enjoy the movie while they pretend to be someone else. Most famous people are raging assholes. If you tried to limit yourself to only "approved" actors, directors, musicians, etc, it would be a boring ass time with Tom Hanks as your standout lead actor.

that 2nd bullet point is reserved for "chicken run", right?
    RIGHT?!

gp, I loved Chicken Run too, but let's be honest here: that was a half-assed voice-over job he did so he could make a down payment on his car. if you listen closely to all his lines, you can actually here a little *flip flip flip* in the background as he counts his money.

I was ready to be FURIOUS about this post, based on the title. I was already running through a rant in my head about how there IS no defense for Mel Gibson, and it's sick that somehow the media is turning things around to attack Oksana, and I can't respect Jodie Foster the way I once did because she defended him...

And then I clicked on the link and smiled. And laughed. And it was good.

Posted by: GwenBear at November 8, 2010 1:17 PM

It is very easy to prove that Mel Gibson is a good actor. He has time and time again, over thirty-five years, gotten us to love his films when he is obviously a nasty human being. Strangely enough, he still has friends who back him claiming, as he does, that he has been misunderstood. I don't know. The guy is a mystery. However, his existence does pose a tough moral question for fans and for his friends. Is it possible to still like a person who hates Jews and has a temper as obviously hair-trigger as his? Perhaps. I think we can appreciate his work without attaching it to him. Accept for the Passion of the Christ which I think is right about where he is as a human being.

    Posted by: professor_love at November 8, 2010 1:20 PM

Very nice. Perhaps the most efficient pound-for-word post in Pajiba history?

Posted by: DarthCorleone at November 8, 2010 1:28 PM

He's a good actor because he has people writing good material for him.
When he doesn't have that and has to "improv" (ie: life in general), he blows it.

Posted by: Odnon. at November 8, 2010 1:38 PM

Apocolypto is by far one of the most exciting movies I've ever seen. And I enjoyed Ransom.

    Posted by: Littlejon2001 at November 8, 2010 1:44 PM

I can't think about it too much, it hurts my 90's crush on him. I watched Payback this weekend too, followed by Lethal Weapon. I'm weak, I had sworn to boycott his movies.

Posted by: Mebe at November 8, 2010 1:50 PM

Oh, Littlejon2001, I couldn't agree more. Apocalypto is also by far one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

    That's what you said, right?

Posted by: Caspar at November 8, 2010 1:52 PM

Due to his exceptional acting and directing, Braveheart is undeniably great. I love a ton of his movies actually. I will watch Ransom all the way through if it's ever on cable. I didn't even listen to any of the taped rants because, let's be honest, I don't care. He's an actor.

Posted by: Mac at November 8, 2010 1:55 PM

I love his work, as an actor and director.
I ussually seperate the person and the work.
And I think there should be freedom of speach.

    There..

Posted by: Magiel at November 8, 2010 2:18 PM

    Maverick. 'Nuff said.

    Well, almost.

Magiel, "freedom of speech" allows for Mel Gibson to say whatever the flibbertigibbet he wants, but it also allows everyone else to disagree with him and to choose not to give him any more of their hard earned cash because they disagree with him.

He also probably beat his wife, at least once. So, here's me excercising my freedom of speech: Fuck Mel Gibson.

    There.

Posted by: RobP at November 8, 2010 2:24 PM

    Love the picture.

    Sounds like .... spigot!

Posted by: mswas at November 8, 2010 2:24 PM

Wel said, RobP. As it is your right.
So it is my right to defend Mel and his work to death, because I love that stuff.
I grew up with the Roadwarrior.

I just grow tired of the mud throwing. Its so easy.*

But I must admit, the post made me laugh out load.

Let's do a male hug, no crotch?

*And I think that slandering the Bay experience is much more funnier.

Posted by: Magiel at November 8, 2010 2:33 PM

    ...and....he's a mammal?

    Yeah, um I got nuthin'.

Posted by: bleujayone at November 8, 2010 3:56 PM

I hate that I love so many of his movies. I hate that I feel like he CHEATED by being a racist asshole. But fuck it, I still love Maverick. And Braveheart and Lethal Weapon and Payback and even freakin' Pocahontas. Damn you, Mel Gibson.

Posted by: figgy at November 8, 2010 5:53 PM

It made me so sad to realize he was such a hateful misogynist/racist. I used to have a crush on the guy and I loved a lot of his movies. Over the years his behavior has become weirder and worse and I just can't see myself going to movies he is involved in in the future. Weird I can deal with (Nic Cage, you fabulous freak you), hateful and violent I can't.

Posted by: Viking at November 8, 2010 6:22 PM

I still really like " The Year of Living Dangerously". As a matter of fact I'm going to put that in my Netflix queue right now.

Posted by: Dano at November 8, 2010 6:45 PM

Yes, he was really good in Payback and fantastic in Braveheart and we could go on and on. But the fact is he has been royally screwed by Oksana. Give him a break. He has more than paid for any sins. Her actions to date and his recent restraint have earned him redemption...if he needed any help.

Posted by: Tara at November 9, 2010 12:04 AM

Mel Gibson: good actor, asshole, eh, who cares? I had a shitty day, and this post made me laugh. Thank you, Dustin.

Posted by: MM at November 9, 2010 12:33 AM

Wait, I just read the comment above mine. Fuck the what?

Posted by: MM at November 9, 2010 12:34 AM

Most famous people are raging assholes. If you tried to limit yourself to only "approved" actors, directors, musicians, etc, it would be a boring ass time with Tom Hanks as your standout lead actor.

I'm with you on that, TylerDFC, but at least most of them are pretty good at hiding it from the public. If people like Gibson and continue to support his work, I can't hold it against them. He's never been my favourite so I don't have a hard time avoiding his films.

I wonder: if we judge someone based on their worst act, what about people who give large sums of cash to organizations that do terrible things? They may not be directly responsible, but shouldn't they have some sort of accountability?

Posted by: Uda at November 9, 2010 1:31 AM

    Yes, What the Fuck?....

That bitch totally screwed him though, all he did was slap her around a bit, and threaten her, demand sexual favours at his pleasure, etc etc. What right does she have to be her own human being?

    You're a sick bitch Tara.

Where's the proof? oh that's right, she has those tapes even though they've been apparently edited and might be deemed inadmissible as evidence. Yep, her photos sure do look like she was strangled and punched twice on the face. And I don't even know how it's possible for a guy as big as Mel to hit an infant without leaving a bruise except a pimple on her chin. Yep, Oksana clearly has nothing to hide even though she tried to fight off a search warrant from the police to search her pc. She sure has such overwhelming evidence that she's now resorted to trying to look for other mistresses of mel so they can back up her claims that he was a physically abusive man. The last one was Violet Kowal but she denied that he was violent towards her. Only the gullible would buy into her stories, even the custody judge has a hard time believing her since he didn't think mel was a danger to his child. And Robyn has denied that mel was violent towards her and their children. What makes oksana more believable than Robyn when Oksana's stories so far have been contradictory?

Posted by: oh please at November 9, 2010 6:46 AM

btw, I can say one good thing about Mel, yeah he may not be a model citizen but at least he has been generous with his money to help the sick and needy children from all over the world. He hasn't tried to use his charity work to make himself look good to the public, like some other stars have done.

Posted by: oh please at November 9, 2010 6:53 AM

I invited Mel to my fifth birthday. He didn't come.

    Posted by: L-Za at November 9, 2010 11:59 AM

    Fucking HILARIOUS.

And I ditto the argument that he has time and again got us to believe that he is a human being when he is actually scum.
