Think Like Us ... Act Like Us ... You Will Listen to What We Say You'll Listen to ... Obey Us. ...
An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Seth Freilich
Well following up on last week’s game, we’ve got some Pajiba playlists, boys and girls. And I say playlists because we’ve also got a runners-up list (which, personally, I think I dig a little more than the “winning” list). I had already decided, shortly after the comments started flooding in, that there would probably be a second list. And once I saw reader Lizzy’s suggestion of calling such a list “That’s What I Call Pajiba 2,” well, the decision was made.
So I’ll give you the two lists now (and clicking on either list’s title will take you to the iTunes iMix), and then I’ll go into a ramble about how I put these lists together, for those who care about such shit, and address some of the comments/complaints/criticisms about all of the indie music that showed up, about why were trying to pigeonhole folks, etc. But first, the lists:
Pajiba Presents: Tunes from the Readers
1. “One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces” - Ben Folds Five
2. “We Used to be Friends” - The Dandy Warhols
3. “Wagon Wheel” - Old Crow Medicine Show
4. “Mad World” - Gary Jules (with Michael Andrews)
5. “The Only Living Boy in New York” - Simon & Garfunkel
6. “Life on Mars?” - David Bowie
7. “Ain’t No Sunshine” - Bill Withers
8. “Hold On, Hold On” - Neko Case
9. “Rebellion (Lies)” - Arcade Fire
10. “Phantom Limb” - The Shins
11. “Breathe Me” - Sia
12. “Paper Bag” - Fiona Apple
13. “Rehab” - Amy Winehouse
14. “Pink Moon” - Nick Drake
15. “Here Comes Your Man” - Pixies
16. “Hallelujah” - Jeff Buckley
17. “Fidelity” - Regina Spektor
18. “Wolf Like Me” - TV on the Radio
19. “Sinnerman (Felix da Housecat’s mix)” - Nina Simone
20. “Birdhouse in Your Soul” - They Might Be Giants
Now That’s What I Call Pajiba 2
1. “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” - Otis Redding
2. “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” - The Decemberists
3. “Float On” - Modest Mouse
4. “Fairytale of New York” - Kirsty McColl and the Pogues

7. “I Want You” - Bob Dylan
8. “You Wouldn’t Like Me” - Tegan & Sara

10. “Not Ready to Make Nice” - The Dixie Chicks
11. “Rise Up with Fists!!” - Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins
12. “Casimir Pulaski Day” - Sufjan Stevens
13. “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left” - Andrew Bird
14. “That’s Entertainment” - The Jam
15. “I’ll Believe in Anything” - Wolf Parade
16. “Two Headed Boy Part 2” - Neutral Milk Hotel
17. “Jesus, Etc.” - Wilco
18. “Son of Sam” - Elliott Smith
19. “The Seed 2.0” - The Roots
20. “Misery is the River of the World” - Tom Waits
So how did these lists come about? Well I stopped tracking comments around 1 p.m. yesterday (although I believe there’s only been one new comment since then anyway). This left me with a list of 1,059 individual songs — I included almost every song nominated, even when folks listed more than five, except for a few instances when people listed just too damn many songs.* For the record, here were the top five individual vote-getters: “Mad World” (26 votes), “Life on Mars” (19), “Rehab” (17), “Rebellion” (16) and “Ain’t No Sunshine” (16). If you would like to see the complete list of tracks, sorted by song title, you can check it out here.
With this big list, I then made two smaller lists. One was just the top vote-getters (i.e., those five I just mentioned were the first five on the list). For the second list, I basically combined all the votes for an artist into one song — if there was one song by the artist that already had an edge over the others, that’s the song that “took” the rest of the votes, but if the votes were split evenly between different tracks, I used my own judgment in picking a “representative” track. And then I compared these two lists and whittled them down into our two playlists.
There were only two “cheats” here. First, “Where is My Mind” (by the Pixies) should have been on the “Now That’s” list. But I decided to punt it since there was already a Pixies track on the “Scathing Music” list, to make room for a new artist (i.e., I wanted to have the two lists give us 40 different artists). Second, Elliott Smith’s “Miss Misery” also should have been on the “Now That’s” list (having only just missed being on the “Scathing Music” list). But iTunes doesn’t carry the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, or any other disc with that song on it (and I am sticking with iTunes not because of any love I have for it — in fact, I rather hate iTunes and rarely use it — but to make it easy for folks to find and buy these tunes if they so choose). So I turned to Dustin, who’s more knowledgeable about Elliott Smith tunes than I am, and asked which of the other suggested Smith songs (all of which only had a single vote) should be a replacement. He said “Son of Sam,” so that’s what I went with.
And there you have it.
Now, as for the complaints and criticisms. I’ll be the first to say that I wish the final lists were slightly more diverse, with a little less alterna-rock and a little more hip-hop, electronica and “agro” (as maylai and Kate K. rightly pointed out). That being said, personally, I’m quite fond of both of these lists and they include quite a few songs that wouldn’t otherwise be on my iPod. So sure, these list could be a little more “diverse,” but at the end of the day, these were the songs and genres that were most popular.
Which of course brings us to the other complaint about all this — several folks bitched about my call that folks try to throw at least a couple of votes to songs already nominated, the most vocal complaint coming from DDT, who said I was only interested in “groupthink.” Well to some extent, that’s kinda true. I said right from the get-go that the whole purpose of this game was to try to come up with a list that was representative of our collective tastes. That necessarily requires some type of, if not full “groupthink,” at least “thinking on the same page.” A representative or populist can only be made in such a way. If I had not pushed people, a little, to add votes to songs that were already suggested, instead of a list of 1,000 songs, we would’ve had a 2,000 song list, with 200 songs having 2 or 3 votes, and maybe about 5 clear “winners.” And simply put, that wasn’t the point of this game. On another day, we may do a comment diversion of “list the five songs that you think everyone should listen to,” but that’s a different beast.
That being said, while the above playlists give us 40 good songs, there are over 1,000 other songs included in the master list, many of which fall outside the scope of these two playlists. So if this is all too “mainstream” or “populist” for you, you don’t need to buy any of these tunes or ever listen to them, and you’re welcome to dig through the other recommended songs for something more to your liking. Or you can just sit on your pedestal and be happy that your music tastes are so more eclectic than, and superior to, everyone else’s.
OK, rant over.
To end on a positive note, a big thanks to everyone for playing along (even those who moaned about it), regardless of whether you voted for already suggested songs or supplied new songs. I know that at least for me, that master list gives me plenty to explore the next time I decide I need some new tunes, and ultimately, that was the purpose of this little experiment, to give everyone a way to discover some new music. And I also think that the two playlists will do that, to a large extent, for many folks.
*(Actually, some other votes may have been left out. Just before publishing, I learned that some comments may have been inadvertently missed by me due to some site-wide problems we’re having with our commenting system and our attempts to automate the weeding-out of spam comments. So if I missed your comment and vote, apple-ologies.)

Good lists. Pajiba Records.
Posted by: Kevin Longrie at April 12, 2007 2:52 PM
actually, i have to add
"Everybody Wants Some (Part 1)" and "Everybody Wants Some (Part 3)" since part 2 is really not the whole song.

Everyone, try to look at the lists on iTunes anyway and give them a rating. Perhaps we can make these lists more visible to the iTunes crowd, which would in turn, make them ask (and hopefully investigate) the question "What is Pajiba?"
Also, if you go to iMixes by this user, you can see another that Seth made for himself I believe, called "2 Hour Drive." Haha. The Killers Seth?

Clap clap clap clap! Yay! Good lists!
I would totally buy this if I wasn't in the process of building a house; hence putting every single available penny into it. Maybe someday...
Posted by: litelysalted at April 12, 2007 3:10 PM
Nice to know that three of my five songs were included.
Great lists! It only makes me love pajiba more. So when my friends ask me, "What is a Pajiba?" I'll play them some of these tracks and hopefully they'll know.

Cool lists!
Posted by: Gaby at April 12, 2007 4:02 PM
Well, I didn't play the game, but the lists are pretty cool... I won't be d/ling it because I believe I have most of the stuff there anyway. But a fun diversion nonetheless.
Hey, someone want to give me an idea on what a better alternative to itunes is? And don't say winamp because I hate that too.
Posted by: TK at April 12, 2007 4:28 PM
a lot of the fun in this will be with bringing littler known yet equally wonderful tracks to people's attention
See, I thought this was more the point of the thing and so I posted as such. The lists are still good, but I think I'll be spending more time perusing the master list for new music.
Props to you though Seth for making order of that beast of a comment thread.

Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse, Ben Folds Five, and Fiona Apple all on the same list?
I love you guys.

No Aimee Mann or Sleater-Kinney? I call shenanigans. :)
Posted by: Arran at April 12, 2007 5:27 PM
Here was my list. I tried to post it last week and I kept getting bounced for spam.
1 & 2. Dirtbombs - Chains of Love & I'm Through with White Girls
3. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (Spanish Techno works as well)
4. White Stripes - Jolene (as Jennifer said (in original post) above, they all work)
5. The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So (seconding jen310's nomination)

My office blocks iTunes. Damn them and their desire for productivity.
Posted by: Brian at April 12, 2007 5:32 PM
Thanks for keeping the master list available. I was really wanting to go back later and dig into other music, but wasn't looking forward to keeping track of what I'd already heard and duplicate songs, etc. This'll make it much easier.
Posted by: Graham at April 12, 2007 5:42 PM
Am I the only one here who finds Amy Winehouse and her pseudo-boozy-hoarse-voiced-friend-of-Kelly-Osbourne-ness schtick absolutely insufferable? I wish she WOULD go to rehab. FOREVER.
Posted by: Salt&Pooper at April 12, 2007 6:04 PM
Just as a point of clarification, not all of the songs listed in the comment section made it to the master list right? In my never ending crusade to make the world of the greatness that is Eddie From Ohio, I looked for my submission and didn't see it (or any other EFO tracks).
Regardless, if you like folk rock, check 'em out people. You'll be glad you did. Start with Looking Out the Fishbowl (available on iTunes, I believe).

Posted by: Joe at April 12, 2007 6:33 PM
I'm with you on digging the runner-up list more, though for the "Miss Misery" stand-in I'd go for something from Either/Or, since it's from the same lush-acoustic era. "Alameda" maybe, or "Angeles."
Posted by: KT at April 12, 2007 6:34 PM
Delighted some of my recommendations are on there, but even more delighted that there are songs I've never heard of on there because if they were selected by the same group collective (would that make us The Pajiba Borg?) who chose the ones I know, then they are bound to be great and I love finding new music. Thanks to all who played along.
Posted by: PaddyDog at April 12, 2007 6:36 PM
TK - I use Rhapsody. you pay a flat fee of $15 a month and can listen to as many songs as you want. I think you get 15 or 30 free listens a month if you don't subscribe. And you can download the songs for ~$.89. The only downsides are the variety -every now and then I look for something they don't have - and the format of downloads isn't mp3 and can't be used on all mp3 players, though it's compatible with quite a few. But it's nice to be able to listen to the WHOLE song before deciding if you want to buy it.

Kevin, why on earth would we want that? Traffic is nice for Dustin & Co., sure, but the very last thing we need here is for the comments section of Pajiba to look like that of various and sundry gossip sites... and I think you know what I mean. Where everyone stops talking about film (and lately, music) and comments only on how fat or fake-titted the actresses (and artists) are. While spelling everything incorrectly.
Ugh, I can't imagine a worse thing. I shudder.

Just wanted to say that I'm pretty jazzed about exploring all the bands I've never heard of that made this list :-) This is exactly how new music fans get turned on (and turned out, like me and my current MMJ obsession). Right on everyone!

And when will these compilations be available a Target?
...what?
Posted by: greer at April 12, 2007 8:04 PM
Yes, Salt&Pooper, I am completely and totally with you on this Winehouse person. "Schtick" is exactly what she is all about. I am really surprised that so many people make such a big deal out of her, and am even more surprised that she made this list. SURELY there are hundreds, even thousands of songs/artists more deserving than her of being on this list. Ugh. She just sucks. And blows.
Posted by: tlb at April 12, 2007 8:44 PM
Verrrrrry nice. I don't do iTunes, but the sets are awesome. I agree, the 2nd list > the 1st.
Posted by: Gabs at April 12, 2007 9:10 PM
Excellent! I was too lazy and busy to play along, but I see quite a few bands on here that I have never heard. Maybe I'll find some new loves thanks to Pajiba! Oh yeah, and a big "hells yeah" for a Bowie song being on the first playlist. ;-)
Posted by: stardust savant at April 12, 2007 9:17 PM
juliagulia, I know exactly what you mean, but I don't think that's what the end result of promoting Pajiba would do. I think the idiots and the Harry Knowles proselytes would stay here, let alone finish reading an entire review. I think we'd have a better chance of some like-minded individuals finding the site and staying than idiots staying to post about celebs.
Posted by: Kevin Longrie at April 13, 2007 12:41 AM
I don't know, I'm kind of disappointed. It's all a bit too soft for me. And no Ryan Adams but the Dixie Chicks?? That song's all right, but just doesn't compare to something like "La Cienega Just Smiled." The lists kind of remind me of the Garden State soundtrack (which I own). It's good listening, but sometimes I need some Walkmen or Waylon Jennings, you know what I mean?
Posted by: Rachael at April 13, 2007 12:57 AM
I wouldn't complain about the lists per se. They are OK and pretty representative, I'll try to listen to some of the stuff I don't know, and I thank Pajiba for that.
But one thing I just can't understand is how or why people would mention that "Fidelity" thing, hands down one of the most annoying songs of the last ten years. Oh, and the other: "Here Comes Your Man" instead of "Where Is My Mind?" - that "there is a Pixies tune already" thing didn't stick.
Posted by: Gargumma at April 13, 2007 1:06 AM
Glad to see I got two of my songs on the second playlist at least. Fairytale of New York is a classic in the UK but mostly unkown outside the British Isles. It's delish.
But no Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key?? Billy Bragg and Natalie Merchant covering Woodie Guthrie! If any of my tunes got on the list I would have wanted it to be that one, because it's possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard. In the words of the immortal GOB Bluth, C'mon, people!
Posted by: Matt B at April 13, 2007 1:42 AM
i honestly appreciate and enjoy the stuff you write here, but with less film reviews and more of these other things i'm starting to feel less interested.
more movie reviews, and maybe set up a different site for all the other stuff you peeps wish to write.
just an idea.
Posted by: daniel at April 13, 2007 2:36 AM
Now I'm actually glad that I was too late to play the previous comment game, I'm liking the lists very much and this is just confirming my love for the wonderful commenters of Pajiba.
Group hug!
*ahem*
I think the angry comments we get from the people who obviously just googled the movie because they "luv" it so and are prepared to blindly defend it no matter how poor *coughTylerPerrycough* are just about classed as entertaining. I shudder to think what the general public would do to our little elitest haven.
I'm only partially joking.
Posted by: Alex the Odd at April 13, 2007 4:30 AM
Awww, I wanted to participate... I'm so absent-minded.
I was expecting the final result to have more... personality. Oh well, now I'd have to explain what I mean by "more personality", but nobody wants that.
It's a great idea, though, to have linked to the Master List. And you just have so much patience. Seth Freilich, great Pajiban, or greatest Pajiban?
Posted by: MJ at April 13, 2007 8:31 AM
Small typo on the master list: "I Wasn't Kidding" is by Angi Stone, not Toy Guns. Just in case someone was looking for it.

YAY!!! GO ME! For naming the list! Woo!!!
Phew, ok, done with that. Anyway, good job everyone.

Alex, Kevin and Juliagulia -
I feel the same way--as I've said before, I come for the reviewers' good writing and "like-minded" slants, but I stay for the comments; there aren't that many sites around like this one. Never mind the odd live one--they're inevitable--their presence is mitigated by Pajiba's unusually high concentration of posters whom I refer to silently as The Eloquents--regulars who write well, say thoughtful and/or hilarious things, and don't go on jejeune, insecure, dime-a-dozen attacks.
Seriously, it's a rare thing. Pajiba reminds me of the old days of Usenet--while massive alts like current-films and past-films were Fark-like more often than not, some of the smaller ones were great arenas for discussion (the Kubrick one comes to mind and--don't laugh--ABSK).
Posted by: Ranylt at April 13, 2007 8:50 AM
s.pisaster, Xilisoft makes an audio converter that you can download for free or buy. The free version takes a bit longer to use but it works fine in my book.
The two lists are quite representative, perhaps not for myself, but yes, quite.
Posted by: The Stew at April 13, 2007 9:00 AM
I'm REALLY glad to see some Pogues on there, it's ridiculous how many people haven't heard of them

"Pajiba's unusually high concentration of posters whom I refer to silently as The Eloquents--regulars who write well, say thoughtful and/or hilarious things, and don't go on jejeune, insecure, dime-a-dozen attacks."
Truer words, my friend. I love the scathing and bitchy reviews, but in all honesty I never get a chance to see the majority of the films reviewed here. This has become my default site to browse through when Im supposed to be working, and the comments never fail to entertain. Which got me thinking...how great would it be if Pajiba gave us a dedicated message board? Hell, TWoP got a writeup in People Magazine, and the comments here make them look like monkeys flinging poo at each other.
Posted by: Matt B at April 13, 2007 11:06 AM
Couldn't agree more Ranylt, it's the comments that get me too although I do get a little frightened by long and well thought-out posts so am more of a lurker. Plus with descrepancies in release timings between the US and the UK I generally can't comment on the films reviewed unless they're a Brit export and have actually been released over here.
Not too sure how I feel about a message board, a Pajiba board would take me even closer to being fired than I already am (stupid inability to stifle laughter). Plus I would then have to try and be popular with the online community and such. Far too much bother.
Posted by: Alex the Odd at April 13, 2007 12:17 PM
I just wanted to drop in and say that we here at Pajiba are as big a fan of y'all commenters as anyone -- you folks pretty much make this site work (and if you want to see evidence of that, check out comments during weekends after our regulars have left. The crazies come out of the woodwork and scare us all.)
I don't think we're big enough for a discussion board, but I suspect we'll do some sort of commenter appreciation week in the not-to-distant future, just so you folks know how very much we appreciate your continued presence. I should also mention that, for those who like to follow comments regularly, Seth set up an RSS feed for them a while back, which some of you may find useful.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/PajibaComments
Otherwise, please keep the comments coming. Off-topic, on-topic, it doesn't really matter. We'll take your very intelligent, irreverent comments any way we can get them.
Posted by: Dustin Rowles at April 13, 2007 12:30 PM
Including a They Might Be Musicians track on list one completely invalidates the 19 tracks that preceded it. Okay, maybe a bit harsh, but Birdhouse in Your Soul? I mean, I really don't think there's a more grating song on the planet. Maybe Walking on Sunshine, but it's close. If any TMBG track had to be included, sticking with Constantinople would probably have eased the cringe factor seven fold. The funny thing is that TMBG just recently released a children's CD, but I thought thats what they've been doing the whole time.
Posted by: Hunter at April 13, 2007 12:51 PM
Nice lists.
On another note, since this is as good a place as any to make an off-topic comment, I really hate the ads on your site. I would becoming a paying Pajiba subscriber *just* to avoid seeing another stupid ass ad for Motto Apparel or SlickNicky.com. Seriously. Think about it.
Posted by: AB at April 13, 2007 1:09 PM
I think we'd have a better chance of some like-minded individuals finding the site and staying than idiots staying to post about celebs.
Fair enough, but I'm sort of an exclusivist, (which may or may not be a word, but I care not!), and I'm perfectly satisfied with the likeminded individuals we have currently. :)
And I guess that's what it is, Ranylt; the Pajiba comments section reminds me of the old days of the intarwebz, and holy crap, I miss those old days.
Anyway, on topic for once - I don't particularly like either one of these lists, but it's okay. I'm just happy to see appearances by Tom Waits, Otis Redding, and Jeff Buckley.
Posted by: juliagulia at April 13, 2007 1:59 PM
i have to say, i was quite impressed with the lists. it's kind of remarkable to see just how many people listen to good music out there, and not just the mainstream crap that is spoon fed to the masses.
that being said, while son of sam is perhaps one of my most favorite smith tunes, happiness, i my opinion, trumps all. i can't get enough of that song.
also, nick drake is definitely one of my favorite musicians of all time but i find pink moon (which is a brilliant song)is how can i say it? just a little overrated. it seems to me that whenever someone says they like nick drake and i ask which song is their favorite, they always say pink moon. always. it's like they say it because everyone else always says it or they don't listen to any of his other songs. i encourage everyone to listen to "place to be", "way to blue" and my all time favorite, "from the morning" which never fails to make me feel sentimental and morose over the fact that someone who gave so much to music (and could have given so much more) had his life taken away far too soon.
Posted by: cris at April 13, 2007 2:43 PM
OK, I'm a little miffed b/c one of the songs I voted for (and someone else voted for, yeah right Ana!) was INCORRECTLY listed on the master list! The song is "Black" by Okkervil River, NOT "Okkervil River" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
For those of you who don't know Okkervil River (the band), give 'em a try. From the content of the two lists, I think you'd like them.
Nice try, Pajiba. I know they're on iTunes b/c that's where I bought my copy of their CDs...

I know the day is wrapping up, so everyone is leaving work (although I'm still stuck here). I just wanted to voice my wholehearted agreement about the comments sections. I don't post frequently, but I read almost all of them, and I know there are a lot of Pajibans out there with whom I know I'd go have a coffee. Or a drink. Or three. Thanks to The Eloquents for keeping me occupied while I'm "working."
Posted by: JKo at April 13, 2007 5:05 PM
I'm pretty happy with both of the lists. I would have preferred a different Jeff Buckley song, but Hallelujah is great too.
And whenever I'm on Pajiba and my roommate or boyfriend or whoever asks me what I'm reading, I wax poetic on the caliber of the posts by the readers. I tell them that the reviews are excellent, but the main reason I come here is the absence of "fucktard" and "asswad" comments, and people who think the Matrix is like, the deepest movie ever, dude.
I would enjoy a message board, but I know from previous experience I would get next to nothing in real life done if one existed. Regardless, I think we should have one. I don't need to do homework anyway.
Posted by: Brianne at April 13, 2007 5:09 PM
Matt B, Can I assume that the write-up you referred to in People was for the quality forums in TWoP? I do totally appreciate the heavy moderating there (I even love that they require approval on a user name), but I'm not sure the caliber of the posts really deserves a nod in a national publication. (Though as I type that line, it occured to me that People is crap).

Thanks to all for all of the music lists. My initial interest was in checking out how "my" entries were faring (to hell with Dow Jones--how's Otis Redding doing today?"), but I soon found myself fascinated by the other postings--and the prospect of checking out music I hadn't heard before based on pajiban endorsments. More music and literature!

What wonderful fun, to have lists and lists worth of song recommendations! Every one of the Pajiba music comment-a-thons has introduced me to bands I'd never heard of and songs that I've loved playing over and over. If you're a Pajiban, you're in Ithaca, and you see someone sipping coffee while listening happily to a little red iPod, you may just be responsible for that happiness. You, or the high-octane coffee. Could be either one. I'm just sayin'.

I lament the lack of Janis Joplin. In general.
I also lament the lack of the Smashing Pumpkins, and I'd lament the lack of Hole if I didn't expect the better part of the Pajiba readership to be unable to get past the "ZOMG COURTNEY LOVE" thing and pay attention to the fact that the music is, more often than not, pretty good.

I was going to put "Live Through This" by Hole on there, but I thought the same reaction would occur. I adore that song, and Courtney Love in general. I think she is immensely talented.

Thanks for doing this! Very cool. I will plumb that master list for music one of these days and check out the winners with which I'm not familiar.
I do have a couple minor gripes, else I wouldn't be worthy of Pajiba and its bitchy people.
Amy Winehouse? Give an artist time to percolate when it's not based on the done-to-death single du jour. I don't believe in including any artist that is so "now" and "hip" on a supposedly comprehensive and representative list like this one.
"Mad World"...I love this song, and I know that it led the votes. I even put it on a mix CD I made for myself several months ago. But does it bother anyone else that it's a bit overplayed and already has associations? Donnie Darko...Gears of War commercial...it just makes it seem like we're hitching our wagon to someone else's find.

Ooooh... Jan, Kevin, Brianne, and Rob! Careful, but you're SCARING ME with your CRAZY-out-of-the-woodwork comments! After all, posting on a WEEKEND is a sure sign you not part of the Pajiba regular "in-crowd" (all four of them deemed worthy of constant shout-outs), whose posts are unfailingly thoughtful, witty, brilliant and deliciously irreverent without one drop of the kind of senseless meanness, misogyny, or celebrity-bashing so many other idiots wallow in. You guys are all just too cool for a loser like me, posting on a Sunday morning. But I'll leave with a shout-out to myself for being the first person, after 200 nominations for Amy Winehouse, to suggest "Casimir Pulaski Day" by Sufjan Stevens.

Brianne and Kevin, Live Through This is one of my all-time favorite albums. It's just... sigh. It's fucking brilliant.
I thought Hole fell apart at Celebrity Skin, sadly, but the stuff during the babydoll-Courtney era was fantastic.

yeah, juliagulia, i'm with you re hole. 'live through this', 'last splash' and 'i'm with stupid' get my votes for best album of the 90's, no doubt. 'live through this' was a fine, fine record.

Wow: 40 songs and only -- what -- seven solo women artists. No Patti Smith, no Aretha Franklin, no Janis Joplin, no Chrissie Hynde, no Bjork or Liz Phair or Kim Deal (except for that Pixies vote)....Your fans are way more insular straight male than I thought.

Wow, kind of racist, matt.
I like Bjork. I guess that means I can be a white woman.

Excellent playlists. It will give me some fun diversions during a rainy Monday.
I'm sad none of my picks made it onboard, BUT now I have a whole slew of NEW songs to choose from!
Silver lining, silver lining...

Rosemary, maybe I'm the loser, but I totally have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not a frequent poster, but I'm a constant lurker.

The Pajiba music lists are bringing me joy! Songs I knew, songs I had, songs I'd never heard and am now in love with.
My husband didn't know about the lists and when I put them on it was a chorus of "Hey I love this song! I love this song too!"
The things one learns about fellow pajiba readers and one's spouse.
Hooray for pajiba and it's loyal readers!
