The Full Moon Makes My Pajiba All Hairy
The Daily Trade Round-Up / Daniel Carlson
When word came out the other day that Guillermo del Toro would be adapting The Hobbit in a pair of films, I was once more given the opportunity to put my familiarity with certain aspects of geek lore on display for my coworkers. One of them had said he thought del Toro was a good choice, and since Jackson is producing, del Toro still has access to various sets and designs from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings series. It was at this unfortunate point that I responded, “Yeah, but The Hobbit is a smaller-scale film. Lord of the Rings had a lot more action set pieces, whereas Hobbit really only has the Battle of the Five Armies.” My coworker — who knows stuff like the backstory for the Immortal Iron Fist, and really shouldn’t throw stones, etc. — looked at me, paused, and said, “Wow, you’re a geek.” I didn’t really know what to say, since it’s true. And even though I stand by my overall disappointment with Jackson’s films, dammit, I’ll probably wind up seeing del Toro’s films when they get here, if only because the 7-year-old in me has always wondered what Smaug would look like in a movie.
For the few of you who haven’t walked away from your computers out of shame for me, I guess I should get on with things. There’s news this week involving a pair of horror remakes, one film potentially good, one likely terrible. First up, the good: Mark Romanek, who was set to direct The Wolfman for Universal, has walked off the project after reported budget differences with the studio. Universal wanted to keep the budget for the R-rated film at $100 million, but Romanek apparently wanted more, which is weird, given that the lead is Benicio Del Toro, who probably doesn’t require more than a $25 wig and a night spent outside to look like the Wolfman. Where was all the cash going? Regardless, Romanek, previously known only for One Hour Photo and some music videos, could have a hard time getting a high-profile directing gig after this. Good luck, man.
Now, the bad: New Line wants to kick-start the Nightmare on Elm Street series with another Freddy Krueger movie, which will either focus on Krueger’s origin story or the summer he spent in Madrid just getting to know himself. The revamp will be handled by Platinum Dunes, the production company headed by Michael Bay. Yeah, that Michael Bay. Platinum Dunes was also responsible for the awesome completely stupid reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a couple of years ago, so there’s every sign that their Nightmare remake will be a major disappointment. Half the fun of that original movie is its cheeseball mediocrity; Johnny Depp gets eaten by a bed, you know? The remake will be nothing more than a greasy and hyper-violent twist on the classic, and it’s completely unnecessary. Thanks, Mike.
Speaking of 1980s horror: Anchor Bay has picked up U.S. rights to Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer after its Slamdance appearance. The horror-comedy stars Trevor Matthews as a teen haunted by the death of his parents who somehow (like it matters) awakens the spirit of an ancient evil, which then stirs up hijinks in the vein of the dozens of B-level flicks from the era that everyone has rightly forgotten. The film even co-stars Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund. No word yet on when and where it will be released.
Also: D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), who’s attached to the film version of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic book Y: The Last Man, has said he’s had “preliminary discussions” with Shia LaBeouf about the Beouf taking the lead role of Yorick Brown in the film. And I, for one, just don’t see it. I can’t come up with any better ideas off the top of my head, but LaBeouf doesn’t have the build or energy or really any of the things I would think you’d want for the role. I don’t know. If anybody has any good ideas — and don’t say Ryan Reynolds; go outside the box, kids — feel free to chime in.
Finally, this morning’s trailer watch has several clips, mainly because we took a break from the round-ups for Classics Week. First up: The first teaser for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, which is pretty brilliant in that it manages to sell the mindset and anticipation without actually showing any footage from the film beyond a shot of the Enterprise that might not even be in the final movie. Still, it’s pretty nice. Take a gander:
Next is the trailer for Baby Mama, which despite a title that’s just cataclysmically fucking retarded, could have a few good moments thanks to the presence of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. And for now, I’ll cling to the fact that writer-director Michael McCullers was involved with the Austin Powers franchise and ignore his work on Undercover Brothers. Here we go:
Meh, I can’t leave you with that. So here’s a music video by Jon Lajoie, creator of rapist glasses, and it’s pretty much the most entertaining reaction vid for 2 Girls 1 Cup you’ll ever see. Turn it up and sing along:

Say what you will about his results, but Abrams can make a damn fine teaser, I'll give him that.
My coworker -- who knows stuff like the backstory for the Immortal Iron Fist,
So do I! Biggest surprise: it has nothing to do with porn! Now Power Man, on the other hand....

I still say that the greatest dragon fight that will, sadly, never be a movie (because girls don't like dragon fights, you know) is from 'Hero and the Crown'.
Maur could kick any other dragon right out of competition. It'd be an interesting film challenge, as the fight happens midway in the book and there's a lot of movie that would come after... but damn.
Posted by: twig at January 31, 2008 7:20 AM
I knew I could smell your brain in here Vermillioooaughhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnn....
Posted by: Dexter Morgan at January 31, 2008 7:24 AM
Oh, no.
Do NOT start that shit again.
I swear I will hunt you down and punch you in the throat.
Posted by: Vermillion at January 31, 2008 7:48 AM
(Sheepishly looks at floor, shuffles one foot) Sorry...
Posted by: Dexter Morgan at January 31, 2008 8:01 AM
Emile Hirsch as Yorick? Maybe even Jason Lee? I dunno...it seems like this dude should be slightly schleppy. Lee can pull that off in spades and Emile is young enough to sell the look.
And boy-o-boy-o-boy do I have a megaladon-sized bone to pick with you MichaelmotherfuckingBay. You raise in me the fire and fury of 1000 suns. It's a blind fury. Why does your douchebaggery have no limits? The things I would do to you given the opportunity... Clubbing baby seals in front of a daycare would seem mild by comparison. Let's just say it wouls involve a package of box-cutter blades, some nylon rope, a lighter, and a drift of 10 pigs.
What is it with you...seriously? Texas Chainsaw - probably one of the top 3 horror movie of.all.time. "How good could it really be?!" you asked yourself. Good enough that there is virtually NO BLOOD from opening to close, with exception of the small cuts on Sally's face and arms, yet, if you polled 100 people about what the bloodiest movie is of all time, I'm willing to bet 50 of them would say the original T.C.M. THAT'S how good that movie was. People associate it with blood and gorem which were lacking throughout. And then you had to go and finger paint your bloody load all over the original script. Fuck you. Fuck you in the ass with an annular cutter. May you be molested by a uncircumsized walrus with herpes. Fuck you and your pandering to the MtV generation. Goddammit....I REALLY want to go overboard on this jackhole. But i will hold my tongue. It's too early in the morning to piss off people in the comments.
Posted by: PissBoy at January 31, 2008 8:02 AM
What?? No, NO, PissBoy, don't hold back!! Please! You had me so close! I almost sent a gush of hot, sweet, sticky coffee all over my monitor!!
Okay, it's waaay too early in the morning for quasi-pron. I'll be a good girl.
Posted by: MO at January 31, 2008 8:27 AM
I'm pretty sure it's Simon Pegg's face you see if you pause the Trek teaser at 0:16.
Not being an avid Star Trek geek though, is Scotty building the Enterprise canonical?
Posted by: cockroach at January 31, 2008 8:34 AM
PB;
People who support Michael Bay's 'career' deserve to be pissed off. Maybe pissed on, even.
Posted by: twig at January 31, 2008 8:36 AM
Wow, I can't believe I just saw a reference from Hero and the Crown. I thought I was the only person who's read that . . . dunno how it would play out as a movie though. McKinley's books tend to have a lot going on in the character's heads, so I'm afraid they'd butcher it like they did with The Dark is Rising. In any case, Maur WOULD be pretty awesome to see on-screen.
Oh, and some girls do like dragon fights--I'm one of them. :-) I'm interested to see how del Torro does it with The Hobbit.
Posted by: nutmeag at January 31, 2008 8:52 AM
I don't know if I even care about yet another Star Trek movie. I just don't know.
As far as The Hobbit goes, I'm pretty damn excited. I found the Lord of The Rings films quite entertaining, and lovely to look at, and Del Toro can only improve on the imagery.

I haven't read the comments so sorry if this is a repeat, but Jason Dohring as Y?
Posted by: Abbey Road at January 31, 2008 9:15 AM
Link issue from the home page. Clicking on the title of this post brings you to "Can't find this page" page. Clicking on Read the Review works. I think there is a quotation mark (") at the end of the link that is screwing it up.
Posted by: Brian at January 31, 2008 9:19 AM
PissBoy - how're the T-shirts coming along?
Posted by: Kolby at January 31, 2008 9:27 AM
Ooh, Abbey Road, good call on Jason Dohring as Yorick. I know he doesn't look much like the character, but I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt could act the hell out of that role, too.
I'd love to see Y on screen, but I'm resigned to the fact that it will probably end up being kind of sucky, what with the inevitable CGI monkey and Shia and all. How is it possible that that guy is a major box office draw?
Posted by: Tabula Swift at January 31, 2008 9:30 AM
The Star Trek teaser rocks. I will say that I hope JJ comes around and gives the Shat-man his due is some way. To exclude him completely is just criminal.
I'm also totally psyched for anything Del Toro does with The Hobbit.
Posted by: Cindy at January 31, 2008 9:30 AM
The design is near finished. I have decided to go with "Pajiba Bus(ted) Tour 2008." Font-wise it's pretty basic, but loosely inspired by old 60-70's concert posters.
Posted by: PissBoy at January 31, 2008 9:32 AM
Casting Yorick is a tough one...I would prefer that they just leave it alone and not ruin the books for me.
Posted by: HallsyHatesU at January 31, 2008 9:36 AM
PissBoy - it's never too early in the morning to dream up demented new ways to torture/maim producers.
Posted by: tt_marie at January 31, 2008 9:49 AM
I'm really upset by how little I care about the Star Trek movie, I just can't muster up any kind of emotion for it whatsoever.
Huzzah for T shirts though. I'm liking the direction they appear to be taking.
And add me to the "girls who like watching scaly winged lizards kicking and burning the shit out of each other" nothing compares to a good dragon fight (except maybe giant robots - but really one concept is just the evolution of the other)
Posted by: Alex the Odd at January 31, 2008 9:53 AM
Without spoiling it for me (I cam in late, so I have been reading it in TPB) how was Y 60 that came out yesterday? Story strikes me as something that would work better as a miniseries than a movie anyway.
Where can I see the T-Shirts?
Posted by: Brian at January 31, 2008 10:09 AM
Brian;
I don't read Y, but the consensus from the people on scans_daily who read it was that it was a mostly satisfying conclusion.
I don't know why anyone would think a four-year comic run could be condensed into a 2 hour movie. It should be an HBO series.
Posted by: twig at January 31, 2008 10:18 AM
"The Hero and the Crown" *sigh* I love that book. "The Blue Sword" is awesome too; I like to reread them out of order every few years. Have you all read the short story compilation "A Knot in the Grain?" I loved finding out who Luthe's Lily was.
My geekiness discomforts me from time to time.
Posted by: pinkcheese at January 31, 2008 10:21 AM
I don't think I'll EVER get the image of a molesting-happy herpes-ridden walrus out of my mind. It's waaay too early in the day for walrus dick.
Alex and nutmeag, I love me some dragon fights as well...they were the only thing missing from Juno.
Posted by: Julie at January 31, 2008 10:31 AM
I do love a good dragon fight, even though I've never really seen one on the big screen... and I don't wanna hear shit about no Reign of Fire, B-Slim.
The Elm Street news makes me a little sad, although I didn't think the Chainsaw remake was terrible. I didn't think it was good, but it was watchable.
Posted by: TK at January 31, 2008 10:33 AM
Add me to the girls who like dragons, large winged or fanged creatures, robots, aliens or things that blow up. I am looking forward to Benicio as Wolfman, a part he was clearly born to play, especially after watching him again over the weekend in Fear and Loathing.
I am also amped about the T-shirts, PissBoy. Colors? Pricing? They are a must have.
Posted by: dammitjanet at January 31, 2008 10:35 AM
They will just be a basic solid color (blue, gray, black, brown, dark green) with white ink. Keep in mind i am doing these as I do my own stuff to get my biz up. I am swamped with work today but hope to be able to at least get a rough pic of the graphic linked up somewhere. Maybe even some kind of 75% complete sneeak preview or something.
Posted by: PissBoy at January 31, 2008 10:41 AM
TK, what is the deal with Reign of Fire? All I remember about that movie is McConaughey.
PB, you never fail to amuse me.
I do have to admit the idea to remake Nightmare is so stupid. That will likely suck so bad.
Romanek has my eternal appreciation for telling MTV to remove his name from the video for NIN's "Closer" vid after they edited the hell out of it. He said that they destroyed his vision. I would have been excited to see what he could have done with Wolfman.
Posted by: Melody at January 31, 2008 10:55 AM
Yay, t-shirts! I can't wait to show mine off.
Posted by: Julie at January 31, 2008 10:57 AM
How about Tahmoh Penikett for Y: the Last Man?
Posted by: phquaryn at January 31, 2008 11:03 AM
Isn't Shia too young to play Yorrick? He's just 21. How about Topher Grace? I can see Emile as well.
Juile and tt_marie, you know what they say "The early bird gets to tentacle rape a hack director with a walrus dick." I might be paraphrasing, but I think that is how I remember hearing it.

T-Shirt Link
OK...lemme preface this by saying I have been very busy and what I have right now is just the template to denote spacing. Right now there are is a hard-line rectangle and oval in the image. Those will disappear. Also, the text will be curved and contoured with the design, as they are there right now for spacing only. Trying to unfuck the corners and make something involving film reels for the border. Lemme know if you think it's total shit. Pajiba! will appear on the front left breast of the shirt and www.pajiba.com will be in small font at the end of one of the sleeves.

I think Justin Long could be good as Yorick. He
has the look and shlebby style down.
But, I have to agree that condensing it down to
a 2 hour movie is just plain stupid.

Looking good PissBoy! I like the 70's rock-tee styling to it
Posted by: Brian at January 31, 2008 11:28 AM
Ha ha ha! Jesus fucking Christ, diseased walrus dicks and hentai tentacle sex...I'm starting to hate this place :p
Pissboy, the t-shirt's lookin good!
Posted by: Julie at January 31, 2008 11:31 AM
Pissboy, I bow to your awesomeness!!! Sign me up for a shirt!!!! seriously, if you do this kind of shit on a regular basis, I need to talk to you...I do community theatre and we buy shirts several times a year for shows....I'd love to throw some business and money your way.
Posted by: dammitjanet at January 31, 2008 11:36 AM
Damn! my employer won't let me see the t-shirt. What should I have expected though, as my bosses are all a bunch of morons anyway.(mutters, sighs)
Posted by: rlr260 at January 31, 2008 11:37 AM
According to my imagination, Smaug is/was reddish and looks like a snake with legs and batwings. A Chinese dragon body but with a European head. And his belly covered in jewelry of course.
Thror's map spoke of "Great Worms", so they'd must have a "stretched" appearance, for the witnesses that survived.
Geeky enough for ya?
Posted by: Adere at January 31, 2008 11:44 AM
I'll check my Pajiba card at the door this time because I didn't think Baby Mama looked too bad. I'm right in the throes of procreation right now though, and I'm a sucker for Tina Fey, so what can I say?
The shirt concept is looking good PB!
Posted by: katy at January 31, 2008 11:56 AM
I'm with who ever said Topher Grace as Yorick It's suce a great series and has such a HUGE scope that I'm not going to get excited about a movie. I'm going to be anit-excited so when the film comes out I can see it and say well that didn't suck as much as I expected and be pleasantly suprised.
Posted by: thirdwave at January 31, 2008 11:59 AM
Yeah, the Baby Mama trailer made me laugh... a little bit... damn it, Tina Fey! That's reason enough to see it.
Posted by: Gabs at January 31, 2008 12:18 PM
See, now, this is the problem with Tina Fey. If she was cast in a Uwe Boll-directed remake of Big Momma's House, I'd probably go see the fucking thing, just because I adore her so.
Bitch.

Posted by: demondoll at January 31, 2008 1:12 PM
Love the design, PissBoy! I'm so jealous of creative types. I can't wait to get one of my very own. (A shirt, I mean.)
Posted by: pinkcheese at January 31, 2008 1:15 PM
Cockroach, I don't think that's Simon Pegg in the trailer. That dude's face is a little too thin. But it's still an awesome trailer. I hope that guy from the Lohan movie (Don't really know or care about his name) doesn't fuck up the role of Captain Kirk. I know it ain't happening, but I still envision Matt Damon in the role.

RE: Casting of Yorick Brown
NO NO NO. Stay the fuck away from this one Hollywood. Why must you destroy everything I love? Every casting choice suggested thus-far is a bad idea (no offense Pajibans) because there isn't a decent actor out there that fits the role of Y.
Just my 2 cents. Carry on...
Posted by: the_wakeful at January 31, 2008 2:16 PM
PB, Dude, that is awesome.
Posted by: Melody at January 31, 2008 2:23 PM
First, what the heck is going on with the header pictures around here. A couple of days ago there was the organ-eating undead dude, and now LycanthropeBenicio. Great day. Give me a heart attack or something, why don't you?
As for the remakes of classic horror, I won't touch them. No reason to dink with greatness. No reason to support the assholes trying to make a buck off of someone else's better idea that came first.
I'm not apologizing for my complete and utter desire to see "Baby Momma". Tina Fey is my girlfriend. And I have a weakness for pregnancy humor, which when combined with white trash humor looks like total comedy gold. And from the fifteen seconds I saw of her, Maura Tierney's character is me. Yep.
PissBoy: Rock on with your kick ass t-shirts. The only thing missing from the whiskeybabyninjastar shirt is a grainy, faded photograph of my kid in his Osh-Kosh's, brandishing his throwing stars. Maybe with a Rising Sun flag tacked up behind him.
Posted by: Alabamapink at January 31, 2008 2:23 PM
Solid design on the Whiskeybabyninjastar graphic PissBoy. What color T-Shirt would that be on?

Whiskeybabyninjastar

Whiskeybaby!ninjastar
my 2 cents
Posted by: dammitjanet at January 31, 2008 2:31 PM
Ugh! Shia LeBoeuf as Yorick makes me extremely nauseous. I don't despise the guy, but he's too damn young and lacking in presence. I think I'd prefer an unknown.
Posted by: Jams at January 31, 2008 2:37 PM
I thought it was "Whiskeybabyninjastar!" and that's how i went with it. i liked it. I think it would look good on a white/black 2 tone tee (black sleeves and collar, white body). That way all the indy-obsessed out there would drool over it move.
And Pink...I thought about drawing a baby wearing a ninja mask, holding a bottle of jack in the forground of a large star backdrop. Or, on the front of the shirt, (imagine this image) Whiskey Bottle + a baby + a ninja + a star (each one a graphic) and then the name on the back.
Posted by: PissBoy at January 31, 2008 2:51 PM
TWIG! Is it my Super-Sweet Pajiba Birthday around here or what?! I LOVE me my Hero and the Crown! Maur was hella rough on my Aerin (god did I want to be just like her or what?). I am actually cruisin' my 35th birthday this next week, and if I can't have been Illyanna (Colossus' little sister, also: my tattoo) Aerin was the next contender. I drew her about a thousand times as a tween, and I still have my original copy of the book, plus the Blue Sword for my daughter to have later...(she's only just turned two yesterday, so she'll have to wait before she can select her tattoo).
Man you guys kick some serious cultural ass.
Posted by: Rebeccah at January 31, 2008 2:51 PM
Oohh, I like the idea of the graphic on the front and the word on the back. And def Whiskeybabyninjastar!. Of course, any way you make it, I'm buying one. Or two, three...
Posted by: pinkcheese at January 31, 2008 2:57 PM
Rebeccah: You have a fucking tattoo of MAGICK??? You are teh rock saur. She was by far my favorite New Mutant, and I always hated the resolution of her character. It wasn't too long after that I stopped reading the series.
PB: OR you could do a star with a baby face in the middle rocking a ninja mask. Bottle of whiskey graphic on the sleeve. I still like the 70's vibe of a washed out photograph. But the word itself without graphics at all is pretty K-Rad.
Posted by: Alabamapink at January 31, 2008 2:59 PM
PB...I am seeing something a lot like a classic KISS concert shirt...am I close? That is too cool. Must have one!
Posted by: dammitjanet at January 31, 2008 3:14 PM
I MUST have both T-shirts. I love 'bamapink's idea of combining the images. Maybe the baby could be slinging the ninja star off the front of an empty bottle of whiskey. People really will wonder what new band we're all suddenly fans of.

What are we, savages? The (!) is absolutely part of the name. Trust me.

Just skip the hate here, the old animated Hobbit did a great job on Smaug and Richard Boone is now forever in my brain as his voice. All rough and disturbingly sexy. Although, if I were dreaming, I'd love to resurrect John Huston to do Smaug's voice for the new one. And if they botch Smaug like they did the Ents in the Two Towers (my formerly favorite crucial to the plot characters that got crapped on) then I will be on the warpath.
Also, holler when I can get a whiskeybabyninjastar t-shirt! I'm liking the KISS-style concert tee idea. Esp. in white on a black shirt.

AlabamaPink --> You KNOW it...Magik ruled. It damn near broke my heart too...mutant aids/baby-fication. Bah. My tattoo is based on a bill sienkiewicz drawing from the Demon Bear era...I looked just like her too - I was literally DYING to run away to Hollywood to audition! Ha - now they finally made the flicks, poor Colossus was hardly Russian at all. Boo. I had to stop collecting at that point too - too sad. I'm always on the lookout for those tough female protagonists...I'm looking into the Long Kiss Goodnight based upon a previous post a while back...something along the line of Ripley will do...God save me from any more 'empowerment' flicks though.
I can do art...maybe if I get the time I'll do up some fierce looking babies for the t-shirt...my toddler is a snot bomb right now, so no promises...

Aerin's story would be a seriously great movie, but oh my, I still want to be Harimad-Sol when I grow up.
I love Robin McKinley - she writes slightly slower than most geological processes but is always worth the wait. She's number one on my "I can buy her in hardback and not wait for the paperback" list.
Posted by: funtime42 at January 31, 2008 8:09 PM
I too love me some Robin McKinley! Can't believe all the love on this site for her! I too wanted to be Harimad-Sol!
And PB, I gotta have the shirts!!!!

I'd rather not see Y on the screen, but I do think that Emile Hirsch or Jamie Bell would be alright options for 'Rick. On the other hand, I've got no idea who could play 355 and Dr. Mann.
With our luck, it'd be Beyonce and Lucy Fucking Lui.

Interesting. I've only read Hero and the Crown, but I really liked it. I never really thought to check out the rest of her books, but based on the love here, I may have to look into them. I love me some strong female protagonists.
I have to second Alex...I just can't get excited about another star trek movie. Especially without any of the major players in it. I know I'll go see it - I have too much respect for what Abrams can accomplish - but it'll be more like a "What's playing? I haven't seen these three movies yet....I guess we can watch Star Trek..." Sad...I used to be a diehard trekkie back in the day...
I want a shirt. Those are looking badass, Pissboy. Let us know when you're done and able to start shipping.
Now...to go check up on what Y: The Last Man is.... (cringes)
