We hated Piz? Hm. I guess I felt sorry for him...

Posted by: Amanda6 at March 28, 2011 4:20 PM

Laura Roslin.

It's her fault.

Posted by: Jay at March 28, 2011 4:21 PM

I don't watch any of these shows so I couldn't agree or disagree.

Posted by: Jay at March 28, 2011 4:23 PM

4 out of 12 from HIMYM? And no mention of Rory's dad from Gilmore Girls?

I am disappoint.

Posted by: jthomas666 at March 28, 2011 4:23 PM

It is not physically possible for me to hate Mary-Louise Parker. In fact, it was her role as Amy that made me love her.

Piz can go shit in his hat, though.

Posted by: TK at March 28, 2011 4:26 PM

Whoa whoa whoa... I know every overweight cat lady hates Rashida Jones/Karen because she was messing up the only thing that gave their life meaning on Tofutti Thursday, but the character of Karen liked Jim and tried to make him a better man.

Pam was being a bitch to Karen who was nothing but nice and open.

Also, let's add Lily for How I Met Your Mother. She adds nothing and gets away with too much.

Posted by: maka at March 28, 2011 4:28 PM

Accept for Laura Prepon, I disagree with your HIMYM picks.

And since when was Karen from the Office an unlikeable character?

Now, Melissa Lauren's character and her stupid accent, I can get behind.

Posted by: L.O.V.E. at March 28, 2011 4:28 PM

Definitely Scott Foley as Sean's fault.

Further to that comment: thus far I've steered clear of HIMYM, and in light of this list I think I'll continue doing so, as my time is precious and I must go slap Rachel Bilson in the face with a haddock. In real life. IN REAL LIFE. Crunch-nugget.

Posted by: zeke the pig at March 28, 2011 4:29 PM

What about the odious Mandy from "West Wing" played by Moira Kelly? She was HORRIBLE.

Posted by: clatie at March 28, 2011 4:31 PM

Yeah, seriously, fuck Amy from the West Wing. She tried to do deadpan but only succeeding in coming off as irritating and perhaps even undermining her cause. However, she was delightful in the episode Privateers(?) where Abby gets inducted into the DAR, and CJ can't stop giggling at Marian Coatsworth-Haye of Marblehead. Okay, maybe my love is based solely off of CJ giggling uncontrollably and simultaneously trying to do damage control.

And maybe also the Francis Scott Key Key.

But seriously, Amy, your witless deadpan pronouncements and balloon animals do not a charming maven make.

Also, philosophical question: if you're a pirate and you're further than 100 miles inland, aren't you then just a gay mugger?

Posted by: StoatCat at March 28, 2011 4:31 PM

I still have not forgiven Alias for that twist. I hated that woman with a fiery passion. How dare she!!!

Posted by: Phedre at March 28, 2011 4:33 PM

Marc Blucas as Riley was the worst part of that entire series.

Posted by: superasente at March 28, 2011 4:35 PM

Four hits for HIMYM. All four pictures include the worst part of the show, yet he gets no mention.

Posted by: lubeg at March 28, 2011 4:36 PM

Also, that you chose Ms. Parker's character from The West Wing over her character from Weeds makes me think you have twisted priorities.

Oh, your husband died and you need to make money to feed your kids? Bitch, get a job!

Posted by: superasente at March 28, 2011 4:37 PM

I didn't even remember that guy on Friday Night Lights.

I certainly did not hate Karen on The Office.

I hate everybody on True Blood.

I would have added Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager. Goddamn was that guy annoying.

Posted by: Todd at March 28, 2011 4:37 PM

WHAT!?!?!?!?

AMY IS A FUCKING BAD ASS!

Take it back. Take it back RIGHT now.

Not so much for you with the talking!

Posted by: Beckylooo at March 28, 2011 4:37 PM

Wait, what?

I LOVED Mary-Louise Parker as Amy in The West Wing.

After reading her name, I immediately scrolled up and expected to find Rowles name. Joanna, I'm disappointed in you.

Posted by: An Atlantan at March 28, 2011 4:38 PM

And while we're on the subject, where the hell is Mandy?

Posted by: Beckylooo at March 28, 2011 4:38 PM

Oh Piz! All we are saying, is give Piz a chance.

Nope. Still hate him.

Posted by: SBrown at March 28, 2011 4:40 PM

Is this a hazing?

(ok, I'm done now. really.)

Posted by: Beckylooo at March 28, 2011 4:40 PM

Can we please add Josh Radnor as Ted in HIMYM to the list? Nobody in that show makes me want to hook my brain out through my nostril as much as Ted.

Posted by: Harley at March 28, 2011 4:40 PM

Can we please add Josh Radnor as Ted in HIMYM to the list? Nobody in that show makes me want to hook my brain out through my nostril as much as Ted.

Posted by: Harley at March 28, 2011 4:40 PM

HEAR, HEAR!

Glad I'm not the only one.

Posted by: lubeg at March 28, 2011 4:41 PM

When there's lists, it should be a maximum of two characters per show listed. This is really bupkis to those who haven't invested into the HIMYM craze. (I haven't had the time.)

I haven't forgiven Alias for that twist.

Posted by: duckandcover at March 28, 2011 4:42 PM

What lubeg said, what Harley said, what Joanna failed to say.

Posted by: schmerpes at March 28, 2011 4:42 PM

I would definitely add Christopher from Gilmore Girls, and that complete DOUCHE who played Rory's boyfriend in the last season. Logan, I think. He was an asshole. And Jesse, too. They both ruined the show in that last season.

And oh, how I hate Vampire Bill, though really, that's just the writer's fault for making him a complete pussy. He's supposed to be a VAMPIRE, not some whiny little Edward Cullen wannabe!

Posted by: figgy at March 28, 2011 4:44 PM

I think I am the only person on the planet who really likes Piz.

Posted by: DominaNefret at March 28, 2011 4:46 PM

I'm with you, clatie.

Awesome West Wing Ladies: CJ, Donna, Mrs. Landingham, Margaret, Nancy McNally, Gina Toscano, Zoe, Ainsley Hayes, Joey Lucas, Abby Bartlet

Less than Awesome West Wing Ladies: Amy, Mandy, Annabeth Schott (I give Kristen Chenoweth's character a little credit here, as Aaron Sorkin was never around to write awesome things for her to say)

Meh: Elsie Snuffin (awesome name though), Kate Harper, Will Bailey's speechwriting Rockettes

Thoughts?

Posted by: StoatCat at March 28, 2011 4:47 PM

I loved Scott Foley as Sean!

Posted by: Julie at March 28, 2011 4:49 PM

Also-Milo Ventimilgia as shithead Jess in Gilmore Girls. He ruined every scene he was in, save for when Luke pushed his ass into the lake.

Posted by: Julie at March 28, 2011 4:51 PM

I like Piz alright. He grows on you.

'Emission to Mars'

Posted by: Allen at March 28, 2011 4:55 PM

Huh. For once, I completely, 100% do not agree with a single choice here. For one, it's always Laura Prepon's fault. For two, you're totally missing Hiro from Heroes.

As such, I'll have to put my internet crush on hold for the day. We'll see how you do tomorrow.

Posted by: RobP at March 28, 2011 4:59 PM

While we're at it, Cobie Smulders (wtf is up with that shitty name by the way?) as Robin on HIMYM. The only two likeable characters on that show are Barney and Marshall.

Posted by: bzzybzz at March 28, 2011 4:59 PM

There is no one, no. one. as bad as Tara on True Blood. At least Vampire Bill brings some angsty cheese that's sometimes amusing. Rutina Whats-her-name's acting basically consists of bugging her eyes out of her head to convey any/all emotion.

Posted by: Gruenedel at March 28, 2011 5:03 PM

Where is Dawn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at March 28, 2011 5:03 PM

West Wing presents the Amy vs. Mandy conundrum. At least Mandy went away. Amy kept coming back. Plus, it made me hate Josh that he was so into Amy, so I'm torn. It's tie.

Posted by: Frankly at March 28, 2011 5:05 PM

superasente, Thank you. I'm a couple seasons behind on Weeds but can't bring myself to put it in the DVD player because she irritates me so much on that show. At first she was likable but by the second season I was just sick of how utterly stupid and what a bad mother she was. I'm thinking her husband faked his death and got the hell away from her.

Posted by: Paultera at March 28, 2011 5:07 PM

Rachel Bilson's cuteness allows her to make anything at worst tolerable

Posted by: EB III at March 28, 2011 5:10 PM

Somehow, reminding me of how much I disliked Rashida Jones on The Office has made me kind of appreciative for the fact that I'm able to be so laissez-faire about her on Parks & Rec.

I hate Ziggy Sobotka more than anyone on this list.

I hate Mr. Krabs from Spongebob much more than a hundred Ziggy Sobotkas.

Posted by: penelope at March 28, 2011 5:18 PM

Hated Piz. Disliked Karen, but HATE Ann on Parks & Rec. Loved Scott Foley on Scrubs though.

Posted by: Mel C. at March 28, 2011 5:19 PM

KATE FROM LOST

Oh how could I forget about the character I've hated more than ANYONE in the history of my television watching?! Holy crap my dislike for that woman was just...overwhelming.

Posted by: figgy at March 28, 2011 5:23 PM

How about:

Dawn - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Emily - Friends

Everyone Lorelai slept with not named Luke - Gilmore Girls

Posted by: John W at March 28, 2011 5:23 PM

And yeah Gruenedel! Tara is the absolute worst! On a show with a lot of mediocre acting, she stands out as atrocious.

And to the person who said Christopher from Gilmore Girls, I have to disagree. I loved him. They had to make him do something totally ridiculous (abandon Lorelei in her time of need) to get the viewers to dislike him and go back to loving Luke (who was a total asshat for at least 2 seasons). What a waste of a totally hot and charming character.

Posted by: Mel C. at March 28, 2011 5:25 PM

1. I agree that TED is what is truly wrong with HIMYM. None of those horrible female characters (and I agree they are horrible) would have had the opportunity to be there were it not for Ted.

2. I believe it's "Vam-pie-uh BEEEEEL." And he is annoying, much as I found Angel extremely annoying back when he was the Emo Vampire Stud du jour. Much as Erik and Spike are equally awesome.

3. Hells yes to whomever suggested that it was Dawn, not Riley, that brought down BtVS into the pit of despair.

4. I have to disagree on Rashida Jones. I think she is totally adorable in everything she does. Even that show Wanted, which was really terrible despite its fascinating cast.

Posted by: Siege at March 28, 2011 5:27 PM

I felt sorry for Piz. He deserved better than Veronica. If it hadn't been canceled, I'm sure she would have eventually ripped his heart out and left him for Logan.

Posted by: Austin at March 28, 2011 5:28 PM

I'm a little confused that there are this many unlikable characters on How I Met Your Mother and that apparently so many of you are still watching and enjoying it. I guess Neil Patrick Harris simply has that much power.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at March 28, 2011 5:34 PM

Oh, figgy, how could either of us have forgotten KATE? I've never felt such a sense of impotent rage at a fictional character in my life. I'm not even sure hate covers it. If it weren't for John Locke and Ben Linus, she would've killed Lost for me.

Posted by: Greunedel at March 28, 2011 5:40 PM

I think the hatred for Riley in Buffy was mainly beacuse we all missed Angel.

I remember how much I despised him, as a 14 year old girl....wishing Agnel would return. I do now appreciate the fact that he needed to leave to make the awesomeness that was Angel season 2-4.

Posted by: crisyroo at March 28, 2011 5:41 PM

I have to disagree with the poster upthread re: Karen and Pam.

Karen dated Jim for what, 6 months?? And acted completely psycho, in the form of having "all night discussions" with him about a kiss that had happened at that point, almost a year ago?? That happened BEFORE they started dating? And then she goes to Pam and says, "I know you kissed but its totally fine,"??

Karen is the crazy b8tch in this scenario. Not Pam. Pam had known Jim for something like 5 years, and she's supposed to...DEFER to Karen?

No way.

Posted by: anon33 at March 28, 2011 5:48 PM

Ohmigod figgy, you are so right about Kate. Why Mr Eko, Charlie, Juliet, Locke et al had to be killed off and Kate was allowed to live is just another example of why Jacob was the tooliest tool-Christ outside of Home Depot.

Toolist tool-Christ inside Home Depot? Miracle Blade. It came, it saw, it didn't conquer shit.

Posted by: StoatCat at March 28, 2011 5:48 PM

Forgot to note that obviously I hate Karen :).

Posted by: anon33 at March 28, 2011 5:50 PM

Although some of the people on HIMYM can be annoying and Lily has morphed from likable to a harpie (no matter how many catchphrases they try to give her i.e. the horrible where's the poop thing from this season) when Stella came back, my fiancee and I yelled at the screen in horror. Zoey sucks too, but Stella was just the worst.

And anyone who thinks Amy Gardner was a terrible character needs to line up so I can bitchslap them. She was a perfect foil for Josh, because she not only was sexy, but she knew just as much and sometimes more than Josh, which he needed because he was such a strong character. I always thought Donna was a little ditzy and even though I knew they would end up together, I didn't root for it. I think you put Amy on the list to start some trouble.

Finally, any list without Dawn or Glory isn't really a list now is it? Riley was a cipher with the personality of a jello mold, but Dawn and Glory went out of their way to annoy people at all times.

Posted by: Rubble44 at March 28, 2011 5:50 PM

DarthCorleone, I think it has to do with the fact that they were all spun to be the potential titular "Mother" of the show and all were found lacking and hate-able.

I'd add "Deputy Hale" from Sons of Anarchy, who while a total asshole, was coming at it from a position of doing the right thing.

Posted by: Fredo at March 28, 2011 5:50 PM

Poor Riley. No one liked poor Riley. Even Buffy didn't like poor, desperate, pathetic Riley.

Oh and YOU LEAVE SWEET DAWN ALONE! SHE IS THE KEY TO THE SAFETY OF THE UNIVERSE AND YOU WILL SHOW HER SOME GODDAMN RESPECT!

[weeps, gripping dvd of Eurotrip]

Posted by: superasente at March 28, 2011 5:52 PM

I didn't hate Karen. At all. In fact, I liked her - I thought she really liked Jim and was a real adult about their relationship. I just felt kind of bad for her because the show made it clear that Jim and Pam were gonna end up together, and if it was clear to us, it was probably clear to her, which is always sad for a girl.

crisyroo I disliked Riley because he's wooden and boring. I disliked Spike because I miss Angel.

Posted by: denesteak at March 28, 2011 5:53 PM

I really liked Piz. I never understood all the hate for him. And I like at least half of those HIMYM characters you have up there.

Matt Czurchy's Logan character from Gilmore Girls is one of my most hated characters. But I love him on The Good Wife.

Posted by: jl at March 28, 2011 5:54 PM

"I would have added Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager. Goddamn was that guy annoying."

Since the game is Characters We Hate, It's Not Their Fault - that goes for the entire frigging cast of Voyager.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at March 28, 2011 5:56 PM

Yes, Penelope! Fuckin' Ziggy!

Posted by: Lauren at March 28, 2011 6:01 PM

"Where is Dawn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer?"

+ 1 milion jillion bazillion

HATED DAWN.

And I liked Karen from The Office, but I felt really bad for her. It was a no-win sitch for her, even though she was cool.

Posted by: Melody at March 28, 2011 6:03 PM

anon33 YES! Thanks for pointing that out. The long discussions about the kiss were totally psycho.

My main problem with Piz was that the character was such a blantant ripoff of Seth Cohen from The O.C.. I love Seth Cohen, but there can be only one.

Posted by: elizabeth at March 28, 2011 6:09 PM

denesteak Don't get me started on the whole Buffy diddling Spike thing, twas redunkulous!

I always felt that Riley was portrayed as an all American boy and being Irish I never got it(I thought it was a culture thing), but hearing my counter parts across the sea expressing the same feelings is heartening!

Posted by: crisyroo at March 28, 2011 6:10 PM

I concur with the Ziggy hate. Also loathed Scott Templeton from season 5.

Agent Stahl (Sons of Anarchy)
Sookie and Tara (True Blood)
Lucy (Boardwalk Empire)

Posted by: Snrub at March 28, 2011 6:14 PM

DAMN IT, PEOPLE! Not everyone has seen all of Lost yet! If you simply MUST talk about who dies can you please put a spoiler alert up? I'm still on Season 3.

Posted by: Paultera at March 28, 2011 6:17 PM

I LOVE Scott Foley on Scrubs and Rashida Jones on The Office! And I quite like (though can totally see not liking) Mary-Louise Parker on The West Wing. Though I've noticed that Parker is a definite love-her-or-hate-her actress, no matter what role she's in. I happen to love her, but that's just me.

But Riley on Buffy was THE WORST!

Posted by: ChristianH at March 28, 2011 6:18 PM

I like Piz AND Riley. Beat that.

Posted by: Craig at March 28, 2011 6:21 PM

Rubble44- I'm stepping up. Hope you have your Code Duello Face-Slapping Gloves. Allow me to lay out my case for why Amy Gardner is annoying.

1. Her tone of voice. I guess her deadpan is supposed to be snarky and smart, but it makes her sound disinterested in every topic.

2. She embodies all of the worst stereotypes of modern feminism: whenever she and Josh disagree, she nags or ignores him until she gets her way. She's a career lobbyist who puts her career ahead of her personal relationships, and she appears to have no friends. Her cause is an excellent one, but she's written and portrayed as a pretty unpleasant person.

3. She only shows up when the show is going to discuss "women's issues", and when she does snark her way into frame, I think, "Fuck. Here's Amy, so tonight we're going to hear arguments about Roe or prostitution or ERA, and they're not going to talk anput it in that delightfully hopeful, geeky, uplifting way that we talk about Galileo V or funding higher ed for the middle class. Somebody's going to be pissed at the end of this, and that party will likely include me. Where's my bottle of Kraken...", i'll say, and thengo in search of said booze.

So, that's my salvo in this little skirmish over what is or is not subjectively annoying. Eviscerate my opinion at your leisure.

Posted by: StoatCat at March 28, 2011 6:21 PM

Oh Tara on True Blood, what's the point of her character apart from being that non entertaining type of bitchy and unpleasant!
She is the antithesis of endearing! When the pyscho vamp took a liking to her I actively wished death upon her!

Posted by: crisyroo at March 28, 2011 6:26 PM

Also agree with everyone re: Ziggy. JESUS CHRIST I hate that guy.

Posted by: anon33 at March 28, 2011 6:34 PM

Damn. Some of you are harsh.

Posted by: Angeleno Ewok at March 28, 2011 6:35 PM

I thought Melissa George was universally reviled, particularly after the fiascoes that were Sadie on Grey's Anatomy and Laura on In Treatment. I know I can't see her face without hearing metal grinding and nails dragged across hundreds of chalkboards simultaneously.

Posted by: Absurdist at March 28, 2011 6:39 PM

Half these characters were people we weren't supposed to like. TV shows sometimes try and be like real life, and when they're not you people rip into them. Make up yours minds.

Posted by: Matt at March 28, 2011 6:53 PM

So, Matt, we're not supposed to like them but we are not allowed to rip into them? Really?

Posted by: cloukie at March 28, 2011 6:57 PM

Oh, I have so much hate to go around. Just off the top of my head:

DAWN on Buffy
Herc on The Wire
Kat on BSG
Kim on 24
Eliza Dushku in everything-but-most-egregiously-on-Dollhouse
Riley on T:SCC
Jess and Logan on Gilmore Girls
Effie on Skins
Michael, Ana Lucia, and Shannon on Lost
Joey on Mad Men

... and Piz. He gets another mention because he is THE WORST (next to Dawn). Him and his stupid, stupid hair.

Posted by: jM at March 28, 2011 7:04 PM

Next time maybe it should be 12 characters from HIMYM we hate. Though I never hated Lily, not that she didn't have a couple "aww c'mon" moments. For me Lily and Barney are the only safe characters I'd never put on such a list. Though Ted is the character of the main cast with the most "aww c'mon" moments.

As far as Alias goes, I liked Lauren once I knew she was supposed to be bad, and not just that I thought she was bad. However Rachel Gibson or Rachel Nichols, I forget which one is the character and which is the actress... let's go with both. I know Jennifer Garner was preggo at the time and so someone else had to do all the martial arts and jumping out of windows and whatever other crazy shit that normally happened to Sydney Bristow, so someone had to pick up the ball and run... but no thank you. I've had a theory for a long time that any actor/actress whose character's name and their name are the same are a pretty crappy thespian. If you don't read the script and see your name before the colon you will never know what lines to memorize, what mark to move to, or if any other characters are actually talking to you.

And now upon actually looking her up and seeing she is attached to the Conan the Barbarian I recant my previous comment in the latest thread about that film.

Posted by: protoformX at March 28, 2011 7:06 PM

The addition of Dawn to Buffy was one of the worst decisions ever made on television. Never before or since have I hated a character with such venomous loathing.

Posted by: squeeziee at March 28, 2011 7:13 PM

oh yeah I totally support the nomination for Eliza Dushku from anything.

I'll give you two reasons.

I don't like her and she has a stupid face.

Posted by: protoformX at March 28, 2011 7:15 PM

I guess I'm in the minority-I love all of the characters in HIMYM. It's why I watch. They all can have annoying traits (Lily and Ted are the worst offenders), but that's what makes them so relatable. And I loved Karen-not as a person, she's a horrible person, but her character made me CACKLE. Those are some of my favorite episodes.

Posted by: Julie at March 28, 2011 7:17 PM

Holy crap, I forgot Starbuck! The most unpleasant human being in TV history!

Posted by: Todd at March 28, 2011 7:18 PM

I'm almost done watching the third season of VM for the first time, and I like Piz, but I like VM and Logan love the most.

Posted by: Candee at March 28, 2011 7:18 PM

I felt bad for Piz. He didn't stand a chance against Logan. Duncan in season 2 on the other hand, I could have done without.

Posted by: Margrete at March 28, 2011 7:19 PM

Ooh, jM, how could I forget Effie from Skins? Actually, that whole Series 3 cast could go on here.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at March 28, 2011 7:25 PM

Herc. HERC. HERC. I loathe Herc with the blazing intensity of a billion exploding suns.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at March 28, 2011 7:31 PM

Melissa George as Laura ('In Treatment') was totally meant to be unlikable, & she did a great job.
Anyone remember Lili Taylor's character from 'Six Feet Under'? Everything about her was like nails on a chalkboard, & intentionally so.

That was good acting.

Most of 'True Blood' cast is irritating as hell, & most have a very modest ability at best.
I only watch this show because my GF is a fan, which would make me a mssochist, I guess... but she often sits through Leafs games with me so we're even.
S1 wasn't that bad, but during S2 I even found myself cheering for Mary-Ann to at least kill off Tara. (btw: hey, did anybody see Michelle Forbes as Pen Verrity in S2 of 'Durham County'? NOT to be missed).

From among the legion of scenery chewing 'actors' on this show the very worst of the worst had to be Even Rachel Wood as the Vampire Queen of New Orleans (or whatever)... WTF am I watching, the American Idol auditions equivalent of a high school musical casting call? As for many of the supporting players in s3, to refer to them as cardboard cutouts would imply too much depth.
I love to hate this fucking show even more than 'Dexter' now (c'mon, admit it folks, only s1 & maybe s4 were any good).

Posted by: harold ballard's ghost at March 28, 2011 7:42 PM

Oh yeah... I forgot Kate from 'Lost' I wish *she* had been unceremoniously blown up with dynamite instead of Zuleika Robinson's character.

Hated the whiny Charlie Pace too.

Posted by: harold ballard's ghost at March 28, 2011 7:47 PM

wow, the list looks like 'pissy single dude hates spouses' and the comments look like invasion of the mentally challenged yet opinionated internet hordes.

you have to watch what you say, or else the hordes pour in.

Posted by: idleprimate at March 28, 2011 7:53 PM

Agent Stahl on SOA was AWESOME! *SPOILER*

Bitch even killed her own girlfriend and pinned her for a murder. What a perfect psycho, I loved her!

Kat was a preening little twat but Starbuck was truly one of the most horrible people ever created. I thought she was pretty great when I first started watching but they turned her into a really loathsome bitch.

Hated Dawn, really hated Faith.

Posted by: snapnhiss at March 28, 2011 8:00 PM

The delightful Smokin and myself hate The COW (Melissa George on Alias). HATE HER. She ruined season 3, Vaughn, Sark, carried one the most inexplicably stupid accents EVER, and was a shitty, shitty actress. HATE HER.

jM, I'm still pissed the Cougar didn't eat Kim in season 2.

Posted by: Melody at March 28, 2011 8:29 PM

There's a rant coming on. Christopher from GG does not deserve the hatred. He was a crappy parent, no argument here. At times a bad parent, yes, bad boyfriend/husband, no. The last two seasons Luke was written as ass and then they made Christopher as an ass in the very end to make Luke redeemable. Luke and Lorelai had no chemistry when they were together. At least you could tell Lauren Graham actually liked David Sutcliffe.

Posted by: Austin at March 28, 2011 8:31 PM

but you're SUPPOSED to hate Karen! (i mean on HIMYM. i'm with everyone else, I liked Rashida Jones' Karen)

Posted by: diz at March 28, 2011 8:31 PM

I see you didn't list Victoria from Season 1 of How I Met Your Mother in there. Good. I liked her a lot.

But now that you lined up most of Mosby's girls, it's very obvious he has a type. Blonde.

@StoatCat:
Amy: "Is this a hazing? 'Cause it's okay if it is."
CJ: "No, it's real. It's real ."

NOOOO!! Rashida Jones' Karen has my sincerest sympathies. I didn't quite "get" her as an actress, but then I read that (in real life) her parents are Quincy Jones and Peggy "Mod Squad" Lipton, and how cool is that?!

Also, you forgot Paz De La Huerta on Boardwalk Empire. Although I do appreciate her nudity.

Posted by: millsie at March 28, 2011 9:03 PM

AHH THANK YOU for including Amy from The West Wing! I hated her so much! She was basically the reason I was reluctant to identify as a feminist for a while (well, really it was that I was young and naive and thought I could do more good for the cause if I didn't call myself what equated to "whiny, annoying chick." And I thought that if Aaron Sorkin, dialogue love of my life, saw feminists that way it must be universal).
The way I see it, there's Sorkin Fast Talking (smart and sexy), there's Gilmore Fast Talking (charmingly inane), and then there's Amy Fast Talking (oh shut up, you're an idiot).

I hated Mary-Louise Parker on Weeds. I stopped the series because I just couldn't take watching the Adventures of the World's Worst Mother anymore.

HIMYM Writers: give Lily a half-way decent plot already. She's the most wasted character on a show full of wasted characters.

Fucking Piz.

Posted by: TL at March 28, 2011 9:38 PM

Ben on Lost. When they did put a bullet in frog face's head early on I quit watching. I guess it was for the best though...

**SPOILERS FOR VERONICA MARS**

While I find Piz to be not nearly scintillating enough for the beloved Veronica (beloved despite her frequent lapses into bitchiness in season three) he deserves far less hate than Duncan, who:

1) found out he was in love with his illegitimate half-sister (or so he thought) and never told her, just dumped her like a hot potato without an explanation

2) a couple months later, he slept with her ANYWAYS while she was incoherent from roofies

3) that same night, she had already been raped and this doofus didn't even notice ("Uh, Veronica, sweetie, your panties are ripped, is that the new style??")

4) then they got back together and lo, it was boring

5) then his ex-girlfriend turns up pregnant and Duncan jeopardizes Veronica's entire future by involving her in a kidnapping plot

Seriously, Piz was a GOD compared to Duncan.

Posted by: Val Vadynia at March 28, 2011 10:34 PM

Hated Ana Lucia in Lost! She really had that bullet coming! Also the dude above watching season 3 should really stop before season 4. Amirite?
I watch True Blood because Jessica's so hot and Erik's the shit.

Posted by: Franamadeus at March 28, 2011 10:34 PM

I always find it a little weird when people hate on Karen. Pam is a dumbass secretary, at least Karen was smart/driven. But I suppose men all love the dumbass secretary?

Also, HATE ted. There is a subset of men who ARE Ted keeping him f'ing alive.

Posted by: stump at March 28, 2011 10:52 PM

MLP was a-mazing on The West Wing. (spoilers) I will never be convinced she was not Josh's OTL.

I am here to second superasente's "Poor, poor Riley."

Krycek! Goddamn Krycek!

Posted by: MG at March 28, 2011 11:16 PM

Really? Hate?? Most of these characters were blips on the radar and in fact could barely qualify as "guest stars". And I'm sorry, Jim didn't deserve Karen on the office. She doesn't deserve to be on this list for "Pam...She's kind of a bitch" alone. Way to call it early.

I have a few suggestions of my own:

1. Ellen Pompeii ("Meredith Grey"), "Grey's Anatomy." I'm not sure if I'm more offended by her flighty, indecisive, self-aggrandizing incompetence or her stringy hair. She is a doctor, for Christ's sake. Go see a hair stylist.

2. Teri Hatcher ("Susan Mayer"), "Desperate Housewives." We get it. You're the goofy one. I've heard weather sirens that we less one note than this character. I tune in every season hoping she'll die.

3. Tony Plana ("Ignacio Suarez"), "Ugly Betty." This dude couldn't have been more of a walking stereotype if they'd slapped a sombrero on his dead and given him a pet donkey.

4. Brian Austin Green/Ian Ziering/Donna Martin ("David Silver/Steve Sanders/Tori Spelling.") The Unholy Trinity of bad acting and bad character development.

5. Taylor Momsen ("Jenny Humphrey"), "Gossip Girl." Just go away. And when you get there, wash off about 3/4 of that make up. I have seen Dali paintings that were less busy than your face.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at March 29, 2011 1:53 AM

This has to be said. Joanna, your jealousy towards Ted's women of HIMYM is obvious and uncalled for. There I said it.

Posted by: James at March 29, 2011 1:55 AM

After Todd mentioned Neelix this thread should've ended... no character in the history of television was such an episode ruiner. Every Neelix episode sucked, he was a fricking crybaby. Worst character ever!

Wow, you guys are really verbose when it comes to who we hate. I kind of love you bitches.

I actually liked Riley, but whatev. And Dawn could choke on a bone wow that sounded dirty, and I really didn't mean for it to was lame.

As for Piz, I think what most people hated was the whole friggin' third season, and they focused that anger at him. He wasn't hate-able, just pitiable.

Posted by: Patty O'Green at March 29, 2011 9:48 AM

Ok, Pam has never been portrayed as a dumbass. That's ridiculous.

Posted by: Mac at March 29, 2011 9:56 AM

You forgot the two most horrid characters on any show at any time in the history of television.
The dreaded S8 of That 70's Show. Way to ruin a show writers. Peeeeeeeyoooooooo

Randy ( Josh Meyers)

here Josh, here is your script....just read the joke...then laugh and shake your hairdo. Yup HAIRDO!!!

Stripper ( Jud somethingorother)

I don't even have the words.....

But thanks writers for making Hyde, once the coolest dude ever, into the biggest asshole on tv

Posted by: kirbyjay at March 29, 2011 10:54 AM

I am an overweight cat lady who liked Karen on The Office. I love Pam and Jim together, but Karen was decent enough.

Posted by: anikitty at March 29, 2011 11:09 AM

Skyler - Breaking Bad.

Posted by: seth at March 29, 2011 11:28 AM

Aww, all the Logan (from Gilmore Girls) hate makes me sad. Logan is my #2 TV boyfriend (after Spike from Buffy...oh Spike...) On the other hand, I admittedly like arrogant guys who many find off-putting, so I guess it's understandable.

And I might be the only person I've ever heard say this, but Dawn actually grew on me. She was obnoxious at first, but then again, she was a 14 year old girl. I was WAY more obnoxious when I was 14. And by the end of the series, I ended up really liking Dawn. Riley, on the other hand, was just plain boring. And in Spike's way.

Totally with all the grumbles about Ted though. Barney was who hooked me on the show, and Barney is still kicking Ted's ass in likeability.

Posted by: GwenBear at March 29, 2011 2:23 PM

Hold up, the worst character on True Blood is obviously Sookie and she is also the reason that Bill sucks so hard. Look at scenes of him with Jessica, Eric or Sam (the water in Arkansas is VERY hard indeed) and you'll see that he's actually quite entertaining. Sookie on the other hand, needs to be banished to Herbal Essences Fairy Land forever.

Also, I'm firmly PRO-Christopher on Gilmore Girls and was so bitter that Luke and Lorelai got together at the end. She and Chris just 'clicked' every time they shared the screen (and yeah, maybe it's because Graham and Paterson hated each other, but whatever - I just couldn't buy them together).

And poor Piz. He was so fluffy and harmless.

Posted by: Nicole at March 29, 2011 2:28 PM

Um, isn't this just a list of characters that are keeping the proto-couple of their respective series(s) apart? WHY HAS NO ONE NOTED THIS IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS.

Oh. It's for the hatefest. Got it.

Posted by: C.Monkey at March 29, 2011 3:32 PM

I agree with Seth, I HATE Skyler on Breaking Bad... even worse, I hated that same actress on Deadwood. There's just something about her face.

Posted by: snapnhiss at March 29, 2011 10:43 PM

Boone and Shannon from Lost.
Dawn from Buffy
Matt McNamara from Nip/Tuck
Neelix from Star Trek
Billy from Six Feet Under (though I originally liked him, he grew tiresome quickly)
Zoidberg from Futurama
Daisy from Dead Like Me
Whatever Balthazar Getty's character on Brother's and Sister is..

I could think of more, but I remember clearly wishing that Nip/Tuck and Lost would somehow end up in the same Universe and Matt and Shannon would both die in the same fiery car accident.

I have to say that as much as I can appreciate why someone might have issues with Amy on West Wing--especially when it came to the "keep coming back" feature--I found myself falling deeply in love with MLP because of that show. Specifically, because of the "Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail" episode. And her dancing to "Caravan." Weak knees and drool just thinking about it.
