The Ten Top 10 Lists that Should Always Include Almost Famous

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (67)

almostfamous5.jpg

Yesterday, over on Facebook, our own C. Rob asked the question, “I would like a comprehensive list of all romantic comedy movies that include a climax involving an airport.” One of the many responses came from Joanna, who wrote: “If we’re counting ON A PLANE and sorta discarding romcom, then Almost Famous has a huge emotional climax on a plane. Also, I *will* find a way to shoehorn Almost Famous onto Almost Any List.”

It’s true. Almost Famous had a huge influence on a lot of writers, especially those who grew up idolizing Rolling Stone, Hunter S. Thompson, and P.J. O’Rourke, only to grow up and discover Pink on the cover of the magazine and the top story, “Dead Juggalo found in a River.” Because Almost Famous has had such an enormous influence on writers, and because writers often are tasked with coming up with list, Almost Famous has a remarkable tendency to find its way upon those list. In fact, on occasion, lists are built around that very notion.

So, today I thought I’d turn that on its head. Instead of coming up with a Top 10 list in order to justify the inclusion of what is the favorite movie of all time for many (including myself), I’d simply create Ten Top 10 Lists, All of Which would include Almost Famous.

And who knows? Maybe someday, I’ll fill in the rest of some of these lists.

  • The 20 Best Movies of the Decade (2000 - 2010)

    14. Almost Famous

    82. “Some people have a hard time explaining rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t think anyone can really explain rock ‘n’ roll. Maybe Pete Townshend, but that’s okay. Rock ‘n’ roll is a lifestyle and a way of thinking… and it’s not about money and popularity. Although, some money would be nice. But it’s a voice that says, “Here I am… and fuck you if you can’t understand me.” And one of these people is gonna save the world. And that means that rock ‘n’ roll can save the world… all of us together. And the chicks are great. But what it all comes down to is that thing. The indefinable thing when people catch something in your music” (#82).

I guess I'm going to have to watch this before handing in my application for my Pajicard.

Also, a top ten list about actual and potential top ten lists? How delightfully meta.

Dude, you can't do stuff like this around a bunch of hipsters. They'll just look at it and say, "Oh, this is established as being cool and influential? Fuck that!"

Because seriously, the movie isn't that great.

Ya know, I always loved Almost Famoust growing up, but everytime I try re-watching it nowadays there's something just a little too cutesy about the way the 70's is portrayed that is hard not to be embarrassed by.

That said, this is a pretty obnoxious article post by any standards.

Top Ten Most Cringe-Inducing Scenes in Cinema: "Tiny Dancer" sing-along in 'Almost Famous'

... what the hell, folks? Some days, I swear it's like (in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder over-acty voice), "I woke up in a bad mood. I need to complain about something. What's going on over on the Pajiba? Holy Shit! That guy is writing about that movie he loves again. What an asshole! What kind of fucking hipster loves movies unironically? Is that some kind of "hipster irony"? Now my head is confused, and it's all your fault, Pajiba. Because you really love that movie. And loving things is obnoxious and hipster, especially when it's shitty semi-autobiographical movies about teenagers falling in love with the world, with music, and with a woman way out of his league. What kind of ironic bullshit is that? Fuck you, Rowles! Fuck you for loving a movie and for devoting a list to it. And besides, how could you forget _______ ?"

    ... and scene.

I follow Pajiba so I can learn how to hate.

Come on, folks, lighten up. It's only a movie and a hell of a lot of fun. And yes, "Tiny Dancer."

"I gotta quit hanging around here so much, the repetition of Pajiba faves is getting old. This is like one of those classic rock stations that plays the two biggest hits from each artist over and over and over and over and over..."

What's funny about this is Dustin ranting about how Bill Simmons only talks about certain things. A shirtless RR got posted recently, so does that mean it's time for another Alison Brie pic, or is it back to hating on Katherine Heigl? Let me get my Pajiba calendar out...

Hating on Almost Famous is like being that person who clicks the dislike button on youtube just so they can be "that person." I hate to break it to you, but you aren't really that cool. :P

Damn, Three-nineteen beat me to it.

I neither love nor hate Almost Famous; I saw it once; it was all right.

Dustin clearly loves it. And, Dustin, that's OK. I caught some of Juno on TV the other night, and I thought, you know, I really enjoyed that movie when it came out, and I'm really enjoying it now. Whaddya know?

Posted by: MM at August 16, 2011 2:45 PM

But was it really a Jimmy Fallon cameo if Jimmy Fallon wasn't Jimmy Fallon yet? I mean, yes, he was already Jimmy Fallon 'cause, well, that's his name but when Almost Famous came out and you saw Jimmy Fallon in it, were you, "Oh, hey, it's Jimmy Fallon! I didn't know he was in this?" Or were you, "Oh, hey, it's that guy from Saturday Night Live...you know, what's his name? Good for him, getting in a movie!"

Seems like it's only in retrospect that it becomes a Jimmy Fallon cameo.

And I don't know what "Jimmy Fallon" means anymore.

Posted by: aidan at August 16, 2011 6:00 PM

I love Almost Famous as much as Dustin loves it. I don't care if it isn't a particularly accurate portrayal of the 70s. I want to live whenever or where ever that film takes place. I love that movie so much that I will still refer to Kate Hudson as "angelic" when describing her to people. That's a very profound and powerful love, y'all.

It surprises me that so many people on here don't like it.

Posted by: becks at August 16, 2011 6:09 PM

Almost Famous IS that great. Plot structure, resonance, dialogue, music...the thing is as close to perfect in construction as I've seen in film.

And I was really hoping at least one of you would help me out on that airport cliche in movies.

    LOUD. NOISES.

Posted by: duckandcover at August 17, 2011 2:00 AM

The biggest problem with Almost Famous is the climax on the plane. By that point the story had stopped being character driven and was just looking for an excuse to run another amusing Cameron Crowe anecdote. So, as a way to conclude the tour, we get the plane incident. Barf.

    I felt so cheated.

    Great plot my ass.

    Billy Crudup was cute though.
