I don't remeber the "Chicks dig the Long Ball" commercial, but, in retrospect, it has to be one of the unintentionally ironic commercials of all time.

You need a #10 link where you've got two #7s. Yo Quiro?

Loving the Marky Mark + junk grab commerical (must be from Canadistan
or maybe Norway). Grab that funky bunch hawtness. Princess Kate still needs
a sammich though.

The Grey Poupon ad was in the 1990s over here? I remember it from the very early 1980s in Ireland. In fact Paul Eddington who stars in the commercial did it at the same time he was starring in "Yes Minister" which ran from 1980 to 1984.

Dumass was from the 90s!!??! But, I still call people dumass.

I am so less cool than I thought I was.

NEW YORK CITY?!

Posted by: superasente at October 26, 2010 3:28 PM

"Chicks Dig The Long Ball" is a classic, and while McGwire's presence is certainly ironic, those nerdy pitchers worked their asses off for that sweet groupie lovin'.

Posted by: Kballs at October 26, 2010 3:29 PM

Kballs, it's not just the presence of McGwire that's ironic, but the whole notion that the way to hit the "long ball" like McGwire is to work one's ass off, instead of, you know, juicing up on the cream and the clear like the great "long ball" hitters of that era.

God damn it I'm old! Nothing, however, will ever beat "Where's the beef?" from the eighties.

I don't remember the Buddy Lee commercial, but I actually own a vintage Buddy Lee doll. My parents owned a western store for over 50 years, and he was on display for most of it.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 26, 2010 3:43 PM

Okay, this is weird. I literally just finished a short story/article in a Susan Orlean book about Marky Mark and the Calvin Klein ad campaign.

Posted by: JapJay at October 26, 2010 3:51 PM

Where's the beef!?!

Posted by: Riles at October 26, 2010 3:52 PM

ForbiddenDonut,

That's what I meant about "McGwire's presence" being ironic, and I also looked at it as Glavine and Maddux assuming McGwire worked his ass off and proceeding to "emulate" his work ethic, but instead getting trapped in the irony of McGwire slathering Cream all over his shriveled scrotum while they're stuck busting their scrawny asses in a desperate attempt to fuck Heather Locklear.

The first time I saw the "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial I laughed until I cried.

& thank you for reminding me of what commercials are missing these days: The 7Up guy

Posted by: grace b at October 26, 2010 4:53 PM

The only truly memorable ones are the "Can't get up" lady and the Grey Poupon the rest are just basic trash.

Seven-guy are you fucking kiddng me?

I've got a question: A while back there was a commercial in which someone said "Ranch! Raaanch!" (referring to ranch dressing) in a really annoying tone. I remember that at the time I thought it was funny, but for the life of me I can't remember what the commercial was actually for. Anybody?

Posted by: Todd at October 26, 2010 5:12 PM

BUDDY LEE!

The print ads were great too. "Buddy Lee's middle name is ACTION. Although, Carl is nice too."

Also, I took a photo of one of those vintage dolls. Bit out of my price range though.

aw man, Hoveround commercials crack me up to this day.

Posted by: Snookums at October 26, 2010 8:08 PM

A lot of Sprite ads were some of my favorites, unfortunately I can't find most of them.

I still have a Taco Bell Chihuahua plush toy that my nieces gave me when they were kids because I was (am?) their favorite uncle. What? No, that's dust in my eye. Fuck off.

Word. RIP Clara Peller.

The greatest commercial I ever saw was one for Fruit of the Loom underwear ... or maybe it was Hanes. It was one of the Inspector 12 series of ads and ended with Inspector 12 and her young, hot protege talking to each other face to face (well, mouth to mouth) in front of a torso mannequin wearing a pair of briefs with a bulge in them to rival Marky Mark's.

Saw it once. Never saw it again. Not surprised.

The Taco Bell Dog= the long lost cousin of Kevin, the chihuahua? Geep, Smokin', I think I found where Kev came from.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at October 27, 2010 6:28 AM

Kevin Conroy would not sully his paws with the likes of "Yo Quiero Taco Bell".

Posted by: Green Lantern at October 27, 2010 9:18 AM

Dan and Dave!! Holy crap, totally forgot all about them. They were cute as hell. And as much as I hate the fucking Braves, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavin crack me up in that commercial. "Hey! Cy Young winners over here!" Heh.

Posted by: Jen at October 27, 2010 3:25 PM

Todd, I believe the ranch commercial you are talking about was for Wendy's. Something to do with a Ranch Burger they had...

Posted by: Tyler at October 27, 2010 4:25 PM

oh man. "Nothin' But Net" was a great ad campaign, and one that I still reference to this day. I can't believe how long ago that was...or those clothes MJ was wearing.

Posted by: grizzle at October 27, 2010 5:29 PM

where's GOT MILK?

Posted by: Somethinbadass at October 27, 2010 5:35 PM

I'm sorry, but none of those are half as memorable as aussie beer ads.

Posted by: Basil at October 28, 2010 9:31 PM

Best part of the Dan and Dave Olympics commercials was they were so hyped up....and both of them completely bombed and didn't win anything in Barcelona.

Posted by: scorzi at October 28, 2010 9:53 PM

ohhh...Brittany Murphy used to sing the MENTO's song.
Don't pretend you don't know that too!

Posted by: james at November 3, 2010 2:15 PM

Coca Cola is still the best! Pepsi is so gross, I don't get why people drink it.
